It saves you tons of marketing budget and instead of building up hype over months that will eventually get disappointed once the product actually releases, you can just dump it and be like "Here it is, check it out.". It wasn't really "bad", but it wasn't great either. It's a more story-drive game instead of an action-driven one like your typical souls games and the likes.
That doesn't have to be bad per se, but I didn't really find the story all that great either.
A lot of time is also spent just running around in the overworld going from A to B, again not really what I was hoping for.

NTA but it really depends on what you're looking for. Are you looking for a game like Nier with an arguably pseudo-intellectual story with surface-level gameplay that you can simply mash through? Then you will probably be disappointed. The story in this is much more straightforward, and the gameplay requires you to actually engage with the combat mechanics. You also shouldn't expect a soulslike because this game doesn't really fit into that category. "Character action game" is probably what people would call this although that doesn't really tell you all that much. It has a bit of Sekiro influence with the parrying but there isn't really one single game you can compare it to.

I've tried the demo on PS5, while it was fun and Eve pretty, I don't think it brings anything fresh or new to the genre. Will probably pirate it on PC.

I think a mixture between Nier Automata and Sekiro sets a pretty decent expectation for what this game is. Definitely takes notes from Nier for the world design, lore and overall vibe. Gameplay leans a little more towards Sekiro and has similar checkpoints, albeit much less punishing and has more of the classic action game abilities.

Debatable. There were like 1-2 costumes that looked slightly more revealing with the 1.0 version (pre day-1 patch, basically what comes on the disc). That being said, they have what are essentially released uncensored versions of these customes by now, plus even more revealing ones. Which makes you wonder why they did it in the first place. Yes, it's easy to get. You need to enable "season event content" in the options because it's obviously not Christmas time right now. Then you just need to run to the Christmas tree in the center of Xion and interact with the presents. There is some bonus stuff that you can get by collecting a bunch of stuff but the dress should be available at the tree iirc.

I wouldn't go into SB hoping for a replacement for Sekiro.

It's solid. It's similar in that it's fairly heavily parry focused, and gives you indicators for when you should do a dodge instead. There's 3 types of dodges. Late game hard mode bosses are great to do, though I don't think they ever got as challenging as Sekiro's, at least for me. But while it won't be exactly like it, it's a game well worth playing if you like that sort of action game.

I get why people would name drop those games when describing Stellar Blade, but it also gives an idea of the game that I don't think quite fits. You could also name drop Resident Evil and Uncharted and it would be kind of right in describing parts of Stellar Blade.

It takes a lot of ideas from a lot of games and puts a bit of its own spin on things. This makes it a bit of a hodgepodge, though I enjoyed the inspirations and how they all mixed together. Some people have described the game as an older style AAA game. Something from the 2000s/2010s. I'd kind of agree. But given how some people hold games like Nier Automata and Sekiro in such high regard, I hesitate to compare SB to them. SB does its own thing pretty well, but the superfans of the other games would balk at the comparisons. And they're kind of right.

But I also think that allows SB to stand out on its own a bit.

Stellar Blade is like Nier: Automata and Sekiro in that it plays like very good AA 7th gen game that doesn't sacrifice presentation and graphics for gameplay depth. It looks good and plays great. other than the protagonist being a hot female android, it doesn't have much in common with Nier, but that's a good thing. It allows it to stand out on its own.

I don't quite know which game to compare it to with the platforming. That's also not a small part of the game. There's a fair amount of platforming, which I rather enjoyed. It's not Mario platforming. Maybe you could say Mirror's Edge? But I also felt like could be a bit more cerebral in SB.

I didn't mean for that to sound like "it is exactly like those games" and you're right that there's other games worked in there. But the director of the game has also made no secret of the fact that Nier Automata led to his desire to create the game, and that Sekiro (and also Bayonetta I think) was a big inspiration for the gameplay. So if we're going to try and draw some sort of comparison to games that many people here have played, it's not unfair to mention them either. Stellar Blade is absolutely its own thing and has some great things going for it. But it gives something of an expectation of what the game will offer and I imagine a lot of people who like Nier Automata and Sekiro will enjoy this game as well. I really did, anyway.

I think it's about the same if you wanna do absolutely everything (including collecting and NG+). Probably around 60 hours for each game.

I hate platforming. There is no way I can finish this game when platforming is involved. Such awful skill issue.

That's probably the worst example of Eve's early designs they could have picked for that image.
Early Eve was still a qt.

I was surprised how interesting the open world areas were. They weren't big, but sure felt like much of the space was designed purposefully with some neat distractions. My personal favorite was the Opera House, but there were a bunch of smaller things that were fun to encounter.

The only criticism I have of it is one that's common of most open world framekworks and that's when you have to do things in a certain order with NPCs. I know how much sense it makes to need an NPC to prompt a quest, but if you run out into the world and stumble upon something before you run across the NPC, I think you should be able to do a quest backwards. That would require the quest designs to design a quest twice, but it adds a lot to the experience. Kind of like how your relationships with certain NPCs changes who meets you toward the end of the game.

I like when games give you choices that you don't necessarily know the consequences of right away. People complained a lot about missables, but they give weight to player actions and can give players extra enjoyment in NG+ runs. Now, there are ways to do missables that are just evil, where a player would NEVER figure it out themselves. Those, I don't miss.

But when exploring, especially in the open world terrain, I found myself trying to see where EVE could go using the few traversal abilities the game gives us. Looking for ledges to climb, boxes to move, or places to swim, I was often thinking about where I could go up or down and not just on a flat plane. There were more than few times I saw somewhere I wanted to go, but didn't know how to get there and then spent time trying to figure out how to get there with a platforming mindset.

Oh, I loved this. The first open area had a metroidvania feel to it. The kind of twisty, mazey feel to level designs that require players to unlock access to certain areas or past areas, that gives a sense of progression to the level without being a linear experience and helps give areas distinctive feels you can learn on memory alone.

I was disappointed when I first came across the second open area cause it was designed in an more open fashion. Partly cause I like the mazey style more, but also cause I like to trawl through ever nook and cranny for any potential secrets and the bigger area made that task so much harder. But I came to enjoy the 2nd area as I learned its layout. Because it was bigger, it was harder to remember exactly where everything was, but I felt like I got a pretty good mental picture of the entire place by the time I was finished with it.

My 1070 just randomly stopped working after a certain driver version. I had to roll back and stay on an older driver for ages until I had the money to buy a new card. Every driver newer than 472.12(?) would just freeze my screen.

If you wanna get and see everything in the game, you need at least 2 playthroughs. You can't get it all in just one.

It's the kind of the game that rewards players who spend a lot of time with it. If someone went through the game and just did the main quests/campaign, playing it like a typical linear, cinematic, AAA experience, I feel like they would get only half the game. But some people just wanna play the game that way and I'm alright the game gives players that choice.

Probably enough for 1080p. The 3000 series is also compatible with the new DLSS4 (minus the frame generation) which apparently gives acceptable upscaling results for 1080p compared to the earlier versions.

I wouldn't call Stellar Blade's combat basic either. It's not SUPER deep, but I wouldn't call it basic. In the spectrum of players from the most braindead casual to the certifiably autistic, I think it probably fits right around the middle. But that means to the casual it's probably too deep and to the autist it's too simple.

There is an obvious point of no return 2/3 into the game before you go to a certain area but before that nothing is missable. The game is meant to be replayed multiple times anyway for the three different endings and some suits don't appear until the 2nd playthrough. By the 3rd playthrough you should have everything if you're a completionist. There is also a secret dungeon that depends on doing the best ending route.

There's an ending that requires more work to unlock compared to the other two. A lot of people in the SB community feel like that one is the true ending. If you playthrough or watch all the endings, I think you could make a case for all of them. Whichever ending Shift Up will use as canon, we'll have to wait and see.

I personally think the "bad" one makes the most sense as the ending the developers will use. It has a much more sequel bait feel to it, as opposed to the "True" ending. It's a fun little thing to discuss while we wait for SB2.

The "true" ending isn't the only ending with text after the credits. I couldn't find a youtube video of the third ending, so I don't know if it has text after the credits, but the Return to Colony ending does and I kind of like it better. But then I'm partial to that ending being the "true" ending.

Also, all three endings are oddly different. When meeting Mother Sphere, one takes places at night, one at dusk, and the last in the morning. And Mother Sphere has different dialogue with each ending. I kind of think all three should be taken together to get a full idea of what is going on.

Nah, there were legit concerns by a lot of people (including myself) that the game was heavily censored by Sony once it became clear that there were changes done to several outfits with the day 1 patch. Turns out that the censorship done was quite minor, but it still happened for some reason. The outfits added post launch surprisingly showed a lot more skin.

Shift Up itself is not rich. SB is Shift Up's first console game and they were developing it by themselves in 2019 under the name "Project Eve" with no backing. Sony eventually took notice around 2022 or so and picked it up themselves as an exclusive and you can see the improvement ()
