Why does nobody get excited about console specs anymore?
Why does nobody get excited about console specs anymore?
Graphics and technology peaked like a decade ago, now better hardware just means worse optimization
If you care about specs just buy a pc.
because they get angry instead
every console is a proprietary locked down PC
the sooner you stop being scammed by fucking consoles and move to PC full time the better
every time they make a new console they can just decide to not let you play your old games, you literally don't even know if you will be able to play PS5 games on PS6, you have to pray when they reveal the console that they give you the PRIVILEGE to play your old games
stop being a fucking fool and buy a PC
my PC is better than any console coming out in the next 5 years
Because the specs stopped being interesting and revolutionary a long time ago. Now it's inflated, arbitrary numbers of gigaflops by the millions, provided with soulless, corporate keynote bullshit.
Because no one is doing anything interesting with the added power consoles have, they just use it as an excuse to be lazy and release increasingly unoptimized games.
because PCs are a thing
The PC I have now will probably be about on par with a PS6 and by the time that comes out, I'll have already upgraded to even better hardware.
every time they make a new console they can just decide to not let you play your old games
wtf they can take my old systems away?!
It's pretty much a non issue unless it's them comparing dicks
The fact you need to keep your old system around at all is the problem.
People still do
everything in that image is flat as hell except for the couch. lmao
you literally don't even know if you will be able to play PS5 games on PS6
I'm actually almost certain you will be, backwards compatible is probably going to be a mainstay since games take so long to develop now that the first 2-3 years of a new gen won't have anything to play if they don't let you play previous gen games too. First few years of a new system will be just using it to play old gen games are higher framerates and resolutions. Sony starting the monetization of backwards compatibility and Nintendo taking it even further makes it pretty clear. Genuinely unreal that consoles are making people pay to run games better on better hardware and everyone is just spreading their ass and taking it.
Because consoles have been nothing but dumbed down PCs since the 7th gen.
anyone who knows or cares about them switched to pc already
t console caveman
added power consoles have
Consoles being weaker than PC is the entire reason unoptimized games exist, because it's easier to design a game to run like shit but look good because console cucks convinced investors they are willing to play upscaled resolutions as opposed to native, and playing at the God awful 30fps mark for whatever fucking reason they thought was okay.
Halo 3 on the Xbox 360 ran at 30fps, and it's fucking ugly. 900p upscaled to 4k is ugly, 1400p upscaled to 4k is ugly, anything sub 60fps is just stutter hell.
If consoles never existed, game developers would have to make games that are optimized for as many parts as possible, to have the most advantage in the market. We could have games running at native 2k 60fps as the standard, and that's not even that good compared to what games CAN do in unoptimized positions.
But no, we get consoles slop, and developers are learning that console fags are willing to delete and install games on a whim and are no longer optimizing game storage but instead prioritizing making a large filesize game so that it can eat your hard drive and discourage you from deleting them in hopes that you play them more and not other 100gb+ games.
Consoles have spawned every negative marketing behavior for gaming probably since 360/ps3 days where they stopped being innovative and started focusing on siphoning money from the userbase
These fucking DEI hires can’t make a game to save their own ass with the specs they have now. They don’t deserve more.
They are just prebuilt pcs that run a bit more optimised because of the uniform specs but always opt out for last gens hardware the most. They don't bring anything new to the table anymore, only repackaging.
30+ years ago, when devs started making proper 3D games, it changed everything. No-one had ever really seen 3D games before, so when games like Mario 64 were first released, it floored everyone. I even remember on Christmas morning, my Dad, coffee in hand, was watching me play SM64 and said "wow, these video game things are really starting to look good now".
Nothing can compete with the leap from 2D to 3D. I'd say around 2005ish, video games had already hit their upper limit, and from that point it was just a graphics arms race.
The apex of gaming has been over for 2 decades now. Best you can do is play the old games and reminisce.
Because however many gflops the next generation of hardware provides they will all be wasted by an uncoordinated army of outsourced code monkeys or autocomplete slop code.
The days when the Shadow of the Colossus devs wrote their own custom memory manager that could move data around on the fly with all the pointers intact just to get a seamless open world with no mid-game load screens on the PS2 are gone forever and they are never coming back. Hardware power doesn't matter if developers don't even attempt to make effective use of it any more.
wtf they can take my old systems away?!
you mean the ones that require an internet connection and active servers to play your physical single player games?
lol, lmao
They stopped making interesting hardware after the PS3. It's all off the shelf components now.
We went from Sonic 1, to Sonic Adventure in only 7 years
The biggest limitation to that, was the hardware, and each console generation really did the lift the chains heavily on what a game could play like/look like
A 3D game could make a proper FPS shooter possible, and other gameplay types that 2D locked consoles could never hope to achieve, and a *good* 3d engine can make characters massively more lifelike/animatable/interactive than a low poly one can
What is there to get excited about? The system is guaranteed to run whatever games are on it, but you won't know if it'll chug or not until you actually play the game. I like watching numbers go up, but only when I'm playing RPGs, not when I'm buying hardware.
Because they don't matter at this point. Either people make games for specs of last gen, which means that games look fine, run fine, but have terrible design. Or they try to make games for the gen after next, which means the games run like shit, look like shit except for screenshots and still have terrible design. We are in a competency crisis right now and until that is solved, all things made will be terrible no matter how much technology evolves.
Because years ago new consoles meant new gameplay experiences. Super Mario World to Super Mario 64.
Nowdays its just to render more facial hair on female characters.
console specs
Literally hasn't mattered since 6th gen. They're just hand-me-down laptops put into a small rectangular prism. Nothing these consoles do is impressive anymore. Games haven't been getting more impressive neither, to boot.
Consoles still exist because tyrone and 8 year olds can't figure out how to use PCs. They're an artificial restriction on cross-platform availability now and they need to die off. They're not interesting in the slightest anymore, they're just worse desktops in cringey proprietary plastic shells.
More specs doesn't mean better ideas in games unless your under 21 and don't know any better.
Stop being cringe and go play Oblivion Remastered, kiddo.
woah they had wireless gamepads back then?
red analog stick
Cool as fuck. Now I'm wishing the real N64 did that.
Because there hasn't been any real breakthrough past 20 years

video games
Is there anything better than that?
the one or two retards in here defending PCs
Bizarre...
Because grafix stagnated to point that even phones can pull decent looking 3d games. Sure, we have gaytracing and all the fluff but don't worth the performance loss like 3d revolution back on 90s.
Good artstyle can make a game immortal but good luck telling that to pajeets shitting assets.
This is a super nintendo.
It use a dual PPU setup to deliver a shitload of different screen modes including the famous mode 7, and it has all sorts of color mixing modes to take advantage of it's newfangled 555RGB color space.
I can talk for days about all the tile modes, tile offset modes, sprite sizes, color palettes and all that.
Also note that metal can on the top right, that's a entirely separate computer made by sony that just happens to communicate with the system via what is basically a primitive network connection. it comes with a built-in ROM to allow you to copy your own program to the basically music computer.
You can see how separate it is when games crash on the snes, as in many cases it may keep playing the song even with the main CPU locked.
It's main CPU is basically an 8bit CPU with "16bit instructions", that are processed 8bits at time, made to be 100% retrocompatible with the NES, with is something that in the end didn't ended happening, but it does give the SNES some weird advantages, such as only requiring cheap 8bit, 2.68Mhz ROMs that are cheaper per MB than 16bit ROMs of the rival consoles.
We've already hit a peak. The next step would be fulldive VR but that is a very long time away.
This is a genesis/mega drive (yes, it has two names), an cut down arcade board pretty much, using the same CPU as most arcades of the time (a 32bit internal, 16bit external monstrosity known as the 68000, with it's fully ortagonal assembly programs).
The video chip is a custom modified TMS9918, a video chip that comes from the old times that was designed around a really shit architecture of a computer that used the video ram as main ram (the TI-99), and had to have very advanced features like supporting DRAM chips without extra circuitry, and allowing you to read and write from the video memory at any time (something the SNES for example can't do, being limited to only the vblank period).
This, combined with all the endless improvements that yamaha did, make it quite a powerhouse of a chip for 1989, both in performance and price, that can do many unusual features such as highlight-shadow modes (that can do pseudo transparent effects), per tile offsets, parallax scrolling and all that.
The audio chip is a cutdown version of the yamaha audio chips found in arcades, with less operators but still very competent in the right hands, with a Z80 CPU driving it instead of the main CPU.
And with this Z80 and the video chip, the system can also do retro-compatibility with the master system without any extra hardware (a first).
This is a PC, but with metal liquid cooling, cheapass SSD chips and an ARM subSoC that pretend being a PCI-E everything and do encryption.
We're past the point where better specs mean better looking games. Graphics are roadblocked by lack of talent, not hardware.
diminished returns and it seems neither snoy or sexbox are willing to go outside of x86 otherwise it will ruin backwards compat and easy PC ports. Apple has done some impressive stuff with ARM would be nice to see someone take a console sized crack at that (outside of mobile/switch ofc).
This really is the real and best answer.
Console specs simply don't fucking matter, increase in specs won't result in better looking or sounding or more fun games anymore. It was totally different back in 80's and 90's when new hardware meant that games that were literally impossible to exist were possible now.
Consoles don't excel at specs, they're supposed to have fun game hardware gimmicks that make them fun.
They need to have guitar controllers or waggle sticks, or some new peripheral like a gameboy link cable players thingy. If I can run everything a console can run on my gaming computer, why would I need a console? Consoles don't even have many local co-op experiences, an area they should excel at.
All consoles should aim to have party games that make them more useful for friends to gather in person.
Ironically I've used my Meta Quest 3 with people in person than I have with my Playstation 4.
