They're Bethesda games with all that inclines: a lot of jank, streamlined mechanics, things feeling dumbed down and overly simplified for anybody to handle, but still generally solid open world RPGs that are fine to romp through if a bit dry on flavor. You don't really get many games like these, so they still are pretty distinct, and who knows, you might get a taste for Bethesda games.

The reason something like Starfield was so controversial was because it was a Bethesda RPG to the barest essentials with next to fucking nothing to actually do with any of it, so all the inherent flaws were easy to find and it was easy to lose interest.

Skyrim was a huge deal back in the day and even got many normies into RPG style games. It's very light and streamlined in the RPG features compared to earlier games in the series, so people got to play it almost like a first person shooter which made it way more popular than Oblivion and Morrowind. I remember when Morrowind came out and some people bashing it because they couldn't understand what was going on. They could tell that you level up and you have skills and quests, but the first person perspective made them think that you can just pick any weapon and start smashing skulls like it's Hexen or something. Skyrim was so streamlined that it did actually play a lot like first person shooter, or first person stabber I guess. The game was announced at a time where most titles lived up to the hype, i personally was a big fan of morrowind and oblivion especially, so i was extremely hyped for it, and so was the rest of the internet.
I remember playing the game the night it released and somehow being blown the fuck away by the atmosphere and graphics, the day after i went out with my closest IRL friend and shopped for pc parts and built at the time a very high end system that could max out the game easily.
That was a good day man, and ofc i played the shit out of it, i enjoyed it.

I was already annoyed by the downgrade from Morrowind to oblivion, so was very cautious. If I'm playing a streamlined game the combat better be fun. Then I played dark souls and Skyrim started to lose all appeal. It came out and I wasn't impressed. Then I played the dragons dogma demo a few months later and forgot Skyrim completely, dragons dogma was my new best friend.
