WRPGs have had their ups and downs. Remember that KOTOR, despite being a pretty shallow duology as WRPGs go, did the equivalent for normalfags what COE33 is doing for JRPGs for them right now, because it took what normals perceived as a difficult to penetrate genre with obtuse and complex mechanics/janky settings and made it something they could be fooled into caring about. Suddenly, it was cool because instead of generic fantasy/sci fi shit, it was Star Wars, and that made it acceptable to like, buy, and play.
KOTOR didn't change the face of WRPGs, and WRPGs weren't even hurting before or afterwards. All it did was have its little flash in the pan before dying ungraciously.

Soule's soundtrack in KOTOR1 was hilariously out of place sometime, but it had its moments I guess. Mark Griskey did a much better job with music in KOTOR2.

FFXVI is a wannabe character-action game with a thin veneer of RPG on top (because it has to - it's Final Fantasy) and succeeds at being neither because it pussyfooted around on both sides too hard instead of picking one side and going all in.
Since SquareEnix actively refuse to make a proper turn-based JRPG version of Final Fantasy in that classic style from the 90s and 2000s, others are finally taking up that mantle and demonstrating how easy it is.
