Honest opinion

Because the board is having a meltdown, here is a nuanced review. I've been following the game since its reveal so I'm well informed.
It's a good game. I'd rate it 8.5, and that's about what I expected from it from all the promo they released. It's no masterpiece. A good game and that's already a miracle for western games.

Pros

Very diverse OST

Likable characters (for most of the game)

Combat is engaging and deep enough for build autists

The biomes all have their own identity/visual design and battle themes which is very rare in Jarpigs

It has a lot kino moments. It's mainly due to the cinematography of the game. It is well directed with very memorable boss introductions (Dualliste, Renoir V2, the Sirene). Honestly I've rarely seen this level of quality in boss design outside of FromSoftware.

The humor is very on point. Specially surrounding gestrals and Esquie.

Cons

The plot is twist interesting but rushed. And all of sudden characters turn into complete assholes during act 3. It has the SnK syndrome where the story was better when there was the mystery surrounding it.

The artstyle itself is top notch but the engine doesn't do it justice, especially in the overworld. You can feel it's a budget AA game because they use some UE store assets. Just like Wukong.

Some biomes are a bit underwhelming (Old Lumiere has 2 enemy types and the Monolith is just recycling assets)

Overall it's a good game, great even. But it lacks some polish and maturity to the story to really be generational game.

It's good... for a JRPG.

Darkest Dungeon still has much better turn-based combat, and DOS2 still mogs it in every conceivable way.

There are more pros than cons.
The expedition wins again.

the ost

the plot

go listen to music and read a book
no one plays games for those shit reasons

A good game, not an all time classic like the market team is trying to make you believe.

Music in game is as important as gameplay.
Gameplay = music > art design > story

all of sudden characters turn into complete assholes during act 3

You didn't play the game

It's all just meh orchestraslop. It's decent but it's just forgettable background noise

To be fair any good game might as well be a timeless classic when compared to modern scene, kinda like Sherlock

Yeah sure. I loved Maelle in act 1 and most of 2 but they turned her into an entitled child in the end cutscenes with Renoir.

go play any rythmy game then
you can put any music you like and you will never need any other game

as important as gameplay

fuck no. sure its more important than shitty artstyle/graphics and that doesn't mean i want every shit game to be photorealistic crap

burnt cripple

entitled child

You didnt play the game

That's not Maelle though

The game is clearly being astroturfed. I have to roll my eyes when the shillbots claim that the reddit tier writing, hobbyist level soundtrack and cloned Person 5 combat the best thing since sliced bread.

It's a good game for sure, but the shilling is quite obvious.

I know 7remake fans have a hard time accepting people liking a turn based game, but it happened with BG3, and DQ3, and Metaphor, and now E33, and it's going to keep happening, so maybe get used to it

You didn't play the game (aka the Game of the Generation)

somebody criticizes E33

immediately defends it by mentioning Final Fantasy

You niggers have issues.

if you dont like this shit game you must like that other shit game

take your meds shill

if its shit at the first 5 minutes (which is generally when devs make their best so you dont refund)
i would love to see how shit its at the end

Anon, you're so miserable.
Let it go

tell that to the ff clowns making a new anti e33 thread every 5 minutes

Only Final Fantasy fans don't like E33

Yes, yes barry
Rebirth both flopped and have NUMEROUS shills at the same time, we know.

maybe if you didn't spam the board shilling your shit game and fucked off to Anon Babble no one would make anti e33 threads

Quintessential reddit game

Fair. I can respect a multifaceted opinion. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

You some autist that mute the game and skip every texts? Fuck off.

The camp dialogues make me want to kill myself. Very cringe

But it lacks some polish and maturity to the story to really be generational game.

Maybe not in the PS2 era, but this it the best turn-based game in over a decade simply be being a good game in a sea of piss and shit.

The humor is very on point. Specially surrounding gestrals and Esquie.

Most cringe part of the game so far for me

>The artstyle itself is top notch but the engine doesn't do it justice

I don't like the art style (just finished the flying waters and it was pure eyecancer) and a good creator wouldn't have tried to force an artstyle the engine clearly can't do justice to
I'm really struggling to motivate myself to keep playing this game. I like mature stories, I like jrpgs and action games, but this blend just isn't for me.

it runs like dogshit but that's a given considering it's UE5

I've only played a little bit tonight, maybe an hour and a half. How long does it take before the gameplay isn't just walking down a straight corridor? Does the amount of talking/cutscenes also lower significantly at some point or is this a 90% watch, 10% play kind of deal?

I like mature stories, I like jrpgs

lmao?

Nope, not even close. DOS1, DOS2, BG3, Darkest Dungeon, Underrail, Into The Breach, XCOM2, Shadow Tactics, Desperados 3, Jagged Alliance 3

(just finished the flying waters and it was pure eyecancer)

I think you just have complete shit taste.

How long does it take before the gameplay isn't just walking down a straight corridor?

All the maps are basic corridors but only the first one or two areas are so linear

Play on Expert and the gameplay becomes a much bigger part of the ratio. Basically there is like 15 mins of cutscenes for each area

nta but the manor does give me eye cancer but that's because AI scaling can't handle it.

broon troonhou weeb faggot with reddit tier reaction image is a retard with shit taste

Say it ain't so

Does Maelle remain the best character? I'm not that far in but all the main female characters seem likeable so far. That pretty much never happens in western games anymore.

The game is clearly being astroturfed.

Yes, but in the opposite direction. There is a non-stop barrage of threads shitting on the game and it's hard to see anything like this as organic after the Anon Babble leaks.

does someone knows the song that plays during some camp cutscenes? Sounds like Lumiere theme, but slower and no vocals. Can't find it.

DOS1

2014 was 11 years ago.

I'm playing with French audio and I really like Maelle's voice lines in battles.
I think I like French.

Prithee, what manner of commenter art thou? No soul within this digital court doth recognize thy presence. Seekest thou to provoke mirth among these gathered spectators? Thou hast cast a shadow most foul upon our merry discourse. Hence, I bid thee make haste and depart from our sight. Tranquility be upon thy spirit, nonetheless.

Just like Wukong

Wukong and E33 are the two best games of the 2020s thus far so, as far I'm concerned, jank or no jank, UE5 is just fine. Also, Lies of P is up there, I think that was done in Unreal too.

I haven't played it, because I'm busy with a KH playthrough, but I did buy it and I'm sure it will be great judging by how angry it's making the mentally ill dregs of this board.

It's pretty fun, it's overall quite refreshing as a jrpg fan and the story/characters are more intriguing than your average anime tier jrpg but I don't understand why it's getting so much attention, it's just pretty good.

jank or no jank, UE5 is just fine

Only because it allows you to remove the cancerous parts of the engine with ini files.

If it allows relatively novice teams to make bangers (E33, Wukong, Lies of P) then I'm cool with it.

Didnt asked

Likable characters (for most of the game)

Sure. But likeable is the bare minimum a character should be. Im playing it and so far im leaning towards a 7. I dont know whats so great about it, but Im just like 6 hours in. The characters so far arent memorable, theyre just OK, but theyre far from the FF7 cast of any persona cast.

Its not really hooking me in as much as these threads would have me believe it would.

I like football, I like golf

(You): HURR DURR YOU CANT PLAY FOOTBALL WITH A GOLFCLUB

Kys retard.
Of course you would think that when you're mainlining absolute asset flip looking bloomnigger cancer into your smoothbrain.

It's the first game in a while the feels like a classic Final Fantasy after SE started pandering to westoids. There are still some good smaller JRPGs around, but most of the big ones fell for the psyop.

you haven't met the best character in the game, esquie, yet then

Stellar music during climatic/impactful moments (the Renoir monolith fight for example) generates a feedback loop that exponentially increases how memorable it is.

If the game was otherwise the same (story/mechanics/etc) but with worse music and less varied/more generic visuals I don't think it would capture even a fraction of its' audience.

This. I'm near the end of Act 2 and I feel the same. They are fine (I like Maelle the most) but other JRPG casts run circles around them.

Its not a JRPG retard

Music is a huge part of why people fall in love with movies and games. Sound in general is an incredibly underrated aspect of games and movies. Nintendo understands this.

Remember when movies had memorable themes?

Yeah. That's why I said the directors knows to direct. He's obviously played a lot of jarpigs and kino ones at that.
Just a small example:
youtu.be/7ii_Wx4TQ8Q?t=166

The way it focuses on Renoir's face for some seconds and the theme starts playing. It's may seem irrelevant but it's small things like this that make it kino.

It's bad because it has blacks. Yes I know they are on screen for like 20 minutes. That is 20 minutes too much

It clearly apes JRPG design; it's a FRPG in the style of a JRPG.

Regardless, it doesn't stand up to either the best of CRPGs or turn-based combat

Pretty fair review. Don't disagree with any of the criticisms really outside of maybe the 1st one. I felt the 3rd act plot twist was engaging enough without the mystery since I was engaged with the exploration of grief that the game set up really well throughout the game and I don't think characters became less likable I just felt they were human with believable human weakness.

Sirene or whatever her name is

Putting memories of loved ones into the party's heads

That confused glance at Verso

That the game can pepper in so many brief but significant shots like this shouldn't be overlookes. The scene director did a great job both elevating emotion and foreshadowing plot with the cutscenes.

t. doesn't like video games

Meltdown? You must be new here. This is mostly just regular shitposting. Don't sweat it. Just ignore low effort, bad threads, and stick to good high effort ones.

There's a simple trick to shill deterence.

1) Pick the latest slop, preferably start in newly created and thus longest running threads.

2) Relentlessly bully the overpaid and underqualified shills until they stop replying -- make a honest and objective case to get them, their supervisors and their recruiters fired.

3) Establish a persona and your own brandspeak while doing so -- they are paid to read all posts, so they'll recognize you, whereas genuine anons won't.

4) Be fair, truthful and constructive in your criticism of the games (and the shills), you don't need to exaggerate or lie -- it's enough to be honest, slop is slop, and any unnecessary slight will be used against you.

Any game aggressively shilled on release and in the first month thereafter is minimally viable, generic slop, that's not worth buying/pirating/playing and only rarely -- if ever -- worth watching as cutscene-movie. In other words: anyone who shills it should be busy playing it instead, if it was any good.

People who play games won't feel an urge to defend it, as they aren't paid to do so. They'll simply engage others who play it in discussion about gameplay and lore and ignore the petty tribalism. They don't have any to gain from convincing others.

After the first couple of threads, it'll be enough to drop your brandspeak in drive-by-shitposts. The more you single out PRgremlins and make a general case against their wretched kin, the more universally applicable your library of shill deterence pastas will be. Eventually genuine anons will pick up the brandspeak and start bullying along, inducing forms of PTSD and paranoia in the shilldoms.

This game, CancerObvious:Exhausting33, has an amazing OST and talented VAs. The writing is utter dogshit. The rest of the game and its presentation is average and forgetable.

I've been here since 2010, I'm a cancerfag
Not many games turned the board like this on release, I could think of something like 10 in 15 years

No you!

There exist two industries that revolve around playing both sides of every conflict.

Eventually you'll realize that marketing isn't trying to sell you shit games, but that shit games sell you marketing, i.e.: pad traffic and engagement -- they are little more than onboarding schemes to consultation rackets, e-grifting parasocialites and digitial daycare-botfarms.
The industry has been captured by PR gremlins. These PR gremlins cultivate an unsustainable economy of lies: they sell problems, rent out solutions (marginally smaller problems) and deceive everyone -- shareholders, developers, customers and players. They don't care about the quality or reception of the product, they don't care about what you believe, love or hate and they don't care to convince you of anything. The more controversy, the better for them.

Their final goal however is to distract and placate you, while high finance (read: their owners, banksters) turns your passions and lifetime into vacuous commodities.

be PR gremlins

gaslight publisher into whipping developers into frenzy to create super-slop

gobble up the majority of the "development" budget, recommend hiring nepotists

proliferate more slop to e-grifting parasocialites to fan the flames; hype a product you know will fail miserably, gaslight customers and shareholders with predatory marketing

reinvest a fraction of your hyper-bloated budget and buy copies through subsidaries and at a discount to gaslight everyone some more, after padding stats shortterm refund to ruin them longterm

simultaneousely shill for and against the product to maximize controversy and thus traffic, engagement and demand of your service and that of your buisness partners, such as consultation rackets

eventually come out of it being the sole profiteer, blaming everyone else

In other words: if you're a shareholder of a publisher or developer studio instead of an investor to a marketing agency, then you are a barely functional lobotomite.

This is a good post showing why this site should have stayed dead when it got hacked and the jannies were all doxxed.

got hacked

Anon, the April 1st "joke" should have tipped you off... it was a means to track and study saturation and transmission. Ut wasn't a hack, just the usual bioluminescent jannisariat whoring itself out for a pittance.

I love that part, the whole fight was a great spectacle.

Least mentally ill shill accuser right here

To be fair the volleyball is by far the worst of the already jankshit annoying minigames. I actually kinda enjoyed the climbing ones Tbh

Since you're likely a flaming leftist homo, I would say no. Go back to your Trails or Dragon Quest 15 or whatever you morons play.

You only get boring outfits from all of them

The volleyball challenge much like the parrying attacks in this game are about rhythm, once you get the rhythm you won

bot

Impeccable reading comprehension.
The point is not to accuse anyone, but to stand your ground with consistent language and arguments -- the likelyhood of genuine anons reacting to your language is neglible, whilst honesty ensures that even if in doubt, you'll be able to resolve conflict... whereas shills can only piss, shit and cry as their checklists, bingo- and flow-charts don't allow for authentic communication.

The positioning is more annoying, the attacks have a weird delay and the depth perception and attack distance is reallg hard to tell with how zoomed out the last one is

Funny you say this when it's always the ones shiting on Expedition 33 who say shit like this where as the ones praising the game are capable of actually reasoning their justifications for praising the game. Almost like you're a dishonest shitposter and are trying to paint a narrative that doesn't exist.

how is it not? it plays identically to persona and even has retarded weebshit writing to boot

It really begs the questions

why would anyone care whether others like or dislike a game?

why would anyone spend time arguing about a game, when they could just play it talk about it with likeminded people?

My criticsm is prompted by unconditional praise and aggressive marketing. I will never interefere in discussion about gameplay/lore or other aspects among people who genuinely like it. I will however religiously bully people, like you, who frame their entire argument as a sales pitch.

Almost like you're a dishonest shitposter and are trying to paint a narrative that doesn't exist.

Almost like you're narrating your own post.

If you want to discuss the game, go ahead. I mean it, pick a thing you like or dislike and go at it. If you advertise it, brace yourself for bullying.
I for one will gladly break down what I like or dislike if asked to without calls to action to tribalists. Until then I'll continue 'shitposting'.

Impeccable inference from two pastas concerning the general, abysmal state of the industry and the cancer that is marketing.

probably haven't even played it yet you lurk threads for it like a fucking loser witch hunting "shills".

My nigger, I have a couple universally applicable pastas I am dropping in generic, formulaic astroturfing threads that shit up the catalog. Yet, I take my time to educate myself on the games -- 7/10 cases playing them if I can stomach the genre/dialogue, in case they aren't as shit as the aggressive marketing implies and in order to be honest and constructive in my criticsm.
In this case: I dislike turn-based combat but stuck around because I enjoyed the OST and was hoping for the writing to match its quality -- unfortunately it didn't last long, so I watched a couple cutscenes ahead to see if it at any point rebounds: it doesn't, so I quit playing and instead watched it as a cutscene-movie.

It an average, trope-ridden rendition of Plato's cave. The VAs' talent is wasted on the script. The artstyle is okay-ish, it does defuse the generic realism but isn't exceptional or even unique, just the usual muted colour scheme and steampunk/high fantasy mashup. The OST is leagues above the final game. All in all it's best described as wasted potential. The marketing doesn't help it, on the contrary: if you pitch it as masterpiece, it'll invetiably face more and a higher level of scrutiny.

Pottery by implication -- you disregard, pre-emptively, any and all criticism as "narrative", cattle-kun. You are quintessentially narrating your own posts.

I like how you say I "disregard all criticism pre-emptively" when you literally didn't make any criticism until I fucking called you out on it. Dumbass.
