Because the board is having a meltdown, here is a nuanced review. I've been following the game since its reveal so I'm well informed.
It's a good game. I'd rate it 8.5, and that's about what I expected from it from all the promo they released. It's no masterpiece. A good game and that's already a miracle for western games.
Pros
Very diverse OST
Likable characters (for most of the game)
Combat is engaging and deep enough for build autists
The biomes all have their own identity/visual design and battle themes which is very rare in Jarpigs
It has a lot kino moments. It's mainly due to the cinematography of the game. It is well directed with very memorable boss introductions (Dualliste, Renoir V2, the Sirene). Honestly I've rarely seen this level of quality in boss design outside of FromSoftware.
The humor is very on point. Specially surrounding gestrals and Esquie.
Cons
The plot is twist interesting but rushed. And all of sudden characters turn into complete assholes during act 3. It has the SnK syndrome where the story was better when there was the mystery surrounding it.
The artstyle itself is top notch but the engine doesn't do it justice, especially in the overworld. You can feel it's a budget AA game because they use some UE store assets. Just like Wukong.
Some biomes are a bit underwhelming (Old Lumiere has 2 enemy types and the Monolith is just recycling assets)
Overall it's a good game, great even. But it lacks some polish and maturity to the story to really be generational game.
