I’d argue they wore the trial gameplay out by V3. Rain Code did the trials in its own way, and it felt awfully stale. The Hundred Line maintains more of the style and energy of the non-trial/investigation stuff from DR than Rain Code did.
It’s about as close as you’ll realistically get to Danganronpa 4 unless they drag him back to Spike Chunsoft.
