I haven't seen many videos, but from what I have seen, the idea is that the player has abilities to deform the terrain, and this is used as a central factor in exploration. It's like Minecraft, but without the building part.
I don't think platforming is the foundation of the game. Like Zelda TOTK, the point of the game is to explore the world, and DK's tools are the ability to destroy and shape the terrain, instead of building machines like Link does.

It's not Pauline's origin story because Cranky is there.
This and the next 3D Mario are going to be the best games on the Switch 2.

If you think in common sense, it's pretty clear Nintendo doesn't really care about matching timelines for Pauline and Cranky, while Cranky is the classic Donkey Kong, Pauline is Pauline, she might have not been the same person young Cranky kidnapped, the one Cranky kidnapped might have been someone else with the same name.
It's rumored that the final boss is K.Rool for the new game, and I have a feeling they have an intention to set the game as a prequel to show how his rivalry with Donkey Kong started, thus young Pauline.
It's also natural for them to make Pauline match timeline with Donkey Kong instead of Cranky if they have the intention to reboot her character as well.
