Portal has only sold 2.5 million but if they take this formula and add in low level native games (exclusives) on the next one and keep the price down then it could be a hit. Steam Deck is a PC, developers don't have to specifically support it. They can support it through targeting the win32 compatibility environment just like any other modern PC. There is also an ever increasing library of Native GNU/Linux software, but that is also not Deck-specific.
Developers are however including support for the Deck's Neptune controller layout, and providing good default settings for its specifications.

PCs have been pricier than consoles historically because OEMs making a PC needed to buy a CPU from Intel, a GPU from Nvidia, and an Operating System from Microsoft, and then source a motherboard and disk drive to use for those components. Then do that all again in three to six months when the requirements to run Windows increase.
Consoles meanwhile could go out and negotiate a long term bulk supply contract for hardware, and spin up an in-house UNIX based OS (or if you're Microsoft ignore the OS costs), and produce the same SKU for years.
Steam Deck LCD costs the same amount as the PS5, and the economics of Steam Deck and similar GNU/Linux PCs built on AMD hardware look more like consoles than Windows PCs.

Given the current trend (thank you Apple) in merging CPUs and GPUs, it's only going to get better for consoles. Moore's law is dead and a lot of improvements are going to come from getting rid of dedicated graphics cards in favor of a more compact and less energy-intensive architecture.
Add to that the fact GPU manufacturers only care about AI shit and do not focus on gaming anymore, and you have a perfect recipe for console resurgence within 3-4 years.

I miss the days where I can install a game from a CD and play it. Now you have to download platforms like Steam or EGS to play. Sure there's GOG but it has its own service with GOG Galaxy.

A few factors led into Sega's exit.
1) They were hemorrhaging money from bad decisions.
2) Their president/CEO (I forget which) died and basically left them a bailout in his will that pleaded "Get out of the console business."
3) Despite being good value, people were just waiting to get a PS2 instead. Sega were actually hoping the infamous issue of PS2 launch stock would give them a boost to Dreamcast sales that holiday. It did not. People would rather have nothing and wait for a PS2 than get a Dreamcast.
4) Many third parties had basically told Sega they didn't care to support them anymore. Sega filled in the holes for a few, like EA, but wasn't looking at getting the depth of catalogue that they would need.
5) Internal Sega devs expressed dissatisfaction and a desire to publish on PS2 instead so that people would, you know, actually play their games.
I had a Dreamcast. Loved the thing. But I knew the minute I saw a PS2 running in a store demo that the Dreamcast was kind of fucked, even if I didn't know the behind the scenes stuff.
