The character in the OP is a mary sue who is with you almost 100% of the time. Nearly every quest objective is to talk to her and nearly all of her dialogue is preaching about cultural understanding or eating tacos. The entire story of Dawntrail can be summed up as a guided tour with no stakes and extreme flanderizations of every previously established character who makes a return appearance for the expansion.
For Wuk Lamat (the OP character) specifically, there's also a significant chunk of the NA playerbase who plays with the english dub, and her voice actor is a literal nepo-hire tranny with zero range putting on a hilariously offputting fake female voice alongside actors who appeared in Game of Thrones.

In terms of writing and character, Wuk is pretty par for the course. People complaining about their character not being the focus missed the point of Endwalker, and shifting away from that is a welcome change, if only they went further and cut out the other scions as well.
Much of the criticism stems from people trying to find reasons to hate by proxy the deservedly terrible voice actor and localization team who did such a shit job that they managed to change the character to be snarky and annoying, whereas in every other dub she's just your usual genki tomboy.
The english VA did such a terrible job that they made him come back and redo a certain set of lines that went viral and snuck it in during a patch

I don't either, in HW Estinien and Alphinaud are essentially focal characters, but when you have focal character as omnipresent as Wuk it actively takes away from other characters and does become a problem.
