I'm so happy you're playing the best RPG ever made. Some advice for you:

Learn Deathblows. Make it your priority. Fei learns them the slowest since he gets the most screentime. Don't use Deathblows in normal combat unless it's an emergency, save them for bosses. If a boss counters Deathblows, use triangle attacks until you can use a Combo. Each attack animation has its own EXP bar (invisible) that you have to raise to learn Deathblows.

The best combos for learning Deathblows are, in descending order: TTSTT, XX, TSTTT. Once you stop getting Skill EXP move to the next combo. Once you get 7-8 AP the best combos become:
Fei: XTTS, SSST, XTX, TTTTTTT
Everyone else: XTTS, TTTTTTT

Billy learns them faster than anyone and he's required pretty often so be sure he's strong. Elly too.

Ether is broken. Any equipment you equip on your character also applies to Gears.
