Before Steam, back to the DOS era PC games often came on multiple floppy discs that had to all be installed to the system, and once that happened you never used the disk again. So the physical media was really just a delivery mechanism. To prevent disc sharing those games usually had DRM in the form of codes you had to put in when starting them up from the game's manual. Even into the optical media era this was a thing, often with even more invasive DRM. Steam won because the DRM schemes it was up against were obnoxious, and the size of game patches meant the physical media wasn't really saving any time downloading.
Computer gaming physical copies hadn't been like old school console games, running entirely from the inserted media since the C64 or the Apple 2.

Even console games aren't really entirely on disk anymore, and some of them are just glorified DRM. Outside of hobbyist projects making their own 'rom' formats nothing works that way anymore.

It does actually, like for example I spent thousands of hours on my desktop PC playing Kenshi, MoW Assault Squad and Tarkov. But I own games like Ender Lilies which I never got around to touching before I got steam deck. Notice how all those games I put thousands of hours into can't run on the steam deck, and even if they did they'd be miserable to play.

Most Linux games are DRM free. Win32 games work just like they would on other modern platforms with a compatibility layer. The only real difference if you've never used a UNIX based OS is the file structure is different. Microsoft lets win32 games shit up the system placing files all over, while Wine keeps them all bottled up in one place.

It's hard to say what to think about this on Anon Babble. Anon Babble seems to hate everything. I think Steam Deck is awesome, but Anon Babble only likes it when it can be used to hate on Switch or Switch 2. (otherwise, Anon Babble hates the steamdeck, and also literally everything else.) I'm not even sure why these shill threads exist. It's hard to imagine companies actually funding Anon Babble shill threads.
I don't have any evidence, but feels more like the regular old tribalism. Some group of weird always-online kids just want to make sure people hate the "right" things. But, it's all to do with video games. Seems like a real waste of time when all I want to do is discuss video games.

Because I like playing games with my friends and family. Most of them don’t have a PC like me (nor are they anything close to “hardcore”) and it’s much easier to get local multiplayer set up with the switch than it is with another platform.

I’m not a Mario Kart person but I’m buying it with the switch bundle so that I can have something I can easily toss onto the TV when I have a bunch of people over that just want to sit around and play vidya.

For everything else I’ll use my PC barring the occasional Nintendo exclusive that I’ll want to play portably; I could buy a steam deck but I just couldn’t be fucked to purchase another situational device on top of all the others I already have. Main reason I was comfortable buying the switch 2 was the fact that it’s backwards compatible with my existing library and the number of hours I got out of the Switch 1; it’s way smoother to make that investment than reach for an entirely new platform. Plus I can just recycle my old switch or give it to my nephew

Most Linux games on Steam for instance do not have any additional DRM once installed. You can just run the executable without Steam running.

There are games on steam that don't require steam to be running to work. If steam is required to be running there's either steamworks or DRM.
