Great writing + acting (both voice acting and mocap), good directing/cinematography. Makes effective use of silence, you rarely see that in vidya. Great art direction, nearly every area is a visual feast.
Gameplay is pretty good, parrying feels great once you get the timings right. Later on parrying matters less, and your build plays a more important role. Really like the customisation there, pulling off an auto death build is a lot of fun. The game feels too easy in Act 3, but that's what mods are for. Exploration is the one thing that I think can be improved in the sequel, I want more nonlinearity.
Music is NieR Gestalt-tier.

Got through Act 1 and uninstalled. There are too many god damn mechanics to learn and the battles drag on FOREVER They took the Mario RPG rhythm game reactions too far. The game format is entirely liner areas with trash mobs > boss battle > cut scene. The cut scenes are LONG and depressing. Your choices, on the rare occasions when you get them, do not matter. You're just being strung along on rails from one cutscene to the next. After playing Baulders Gate 3 as my last game this feels like a huge step backwards. I just do not care about these damn French people and their paint-world problems.

The game is fantastic. Dark Souls moment for classic PS1 style JRPG's. It is a phenomenally well designed game, with an inspired art style. The controls are very precise. The combat mechanics and weapon system is perfectly simple and also deep. Every weapon has three unique effects or skills and there are over a dozen weapons for every character. Each characters mechanics are perfectly tutorialized and given time to expand. The power fantasy is amazing when you begin unlocking extremely powerful skills and dumping out millions of damage. There are actually fun platforming sections as well as a ton of bonus boss fights and side dungeons to find in the overworld.
This is JRPG game design done right in so many ways. When you get a new equipment piece that offers a unique skill, like casting a Shell buff, or resistance to being Charmed, you will learn that skill after 4 battles of having it equipped. All characters will simultaneously learn the skill, so you don't have to worry about finding more equipment and equipping it on everyone else. This allows for character and team building that is constantly fresh and new, you're constantly equipping and learning new skills and expanding your repertoire of abilities and becoming STUPID powerful. But the game is still built around this, and so it keeps throwing more and more greater monsters your way to tackle with your broken damage output.
Every single encounter in the game is well designed. All of the monsters in the overworld grant you a massive weapon upgrade, or crafting materials, or both. There is no wasted time. You don't even have to go out and farm for materials, because every new enemy encounter is going to have you swimming in new, meaningful loot. There is almost nothing the game gives you that you won't use.
The style, graphics, art and animation speaks for itself. There are some AA level holes in there, but overall the quality is exceptional. Women are beautiful, men are badass.
Play it.

Don't really care about critics, but I am enjoying it. Great to look at, great to listen to, plays great. Synergies, set-ups and pay-offs, super limited consumables.
And most importantly: it's a great take on the "Four niggas in a row" genre and it does, how do I put it, "involved gameplay" much better than Penis Arcade and Last Remnant (I don't like Marios, so I never played MaRPG and probably never will). Although I don't like defense being completely manual (mainly because it's delay-slop), but it doesn't outweigh the good.
Also it's pretty damn brutal. Major wipeouts.
I just accepted that doing Sprong at level 35 was going to be the hardest and most fun battle in the game (and it was, felt fucking GOOD to win) and the rest of the game was going to be easy.
I don't think I parried anything the last 10 hours of the game because I killed everything before it can move.

Going by pc releases, I preferred Rebirth overall. It's just a more enjoyable game. EX33 is definitely the best brand new release so far (but look at the miserable competition...) and will no doubt pick up awards but there's still 7 months to go and I don't feel EX33 has enough to keep people raving about it by then.

The magical properties of chroma actually do lead to the creation of humans with sentience inside the painting. Not a stupid question. Besides a few references to Aline's "fake family", the distinctions between the painted/real Dessendres are really muddy. Weakest link in the plot IMO. For example, when fake Renoir tells the Curator, "look at what has become of your son", after we're led to assume the Paintress is Verso's mother. So who is the Curator? Verso has two dads, now? Flat out confusing. We had no reason to assume at that point we're dealing with fake and real versions of Verso's family.

All this game will be remembered about is the debate regarding the ending, and some will mention the good OST. Some say how that is better than having an overarching epic adventure, that it will drive more discussion, and I agree but only for the short term. People will get tired of debating this sometime and move on. True classics like Chrono Trigger and FFVII (among others) all relied on a great adventure.
It's absolutely better than Automata, Pathologic 2 and Armored Core VI. Some of the others i'd say are better and some of the others i'd say are worse.
The broad strokes of the plot were clear - Paintress was going to be revealed to be sympathetic, Maelle was a repressed or amnesic Paintress or Alicia or something, the true antagonist was yet to be revealed - but for me, the build-up wasn't very satisfying. We're slowly getting dripfed the dynamics of this family that I wasn't entirely convinced had anything to do with the real stakes of the plot, and I was impatient to get it over with. I spoiled the big reveal right at the Paintress fight because I was playing on Expert and getting my shit pushed in. I seriously regret it.

It's dramatically overrated but still a decent enough game.
Nier is actually creative with its storytelling, 33 is just fights -> cutscenes -> fights -> cutscenes. The themes of Clair Obscur also are pretty much obvious and from the first five minutes and I knew what the game was going to be about and how it was going to thematically tie up pretty much from the trailers. Nier Automata actually baits you into thinking the game is supposed to be about something else than it ends up being. Not to mention just how Nier switches up the gameplay and how it integrates the music into it, it's not just there to be a nice background. It's setting also doesn't undermine it's themes unlike what happens at the end of Clair.
I'd still put Clair in probably around the top 20 games of the last decade. But I think people do tend to have a bias towards it because it's a new, fresh experience and people tend to forget how special some of the games we got in the last decade really were.

Philosophical depth is not the same as good storytelling. I can enjoy both Blood Meridian and The Critique of Pure Reason and don't expect one to do the other. Nier obviously simplifies a lot of its philosophical inspirations because it's parodying them and at its core trying to be creative and tell a great story. Despite that unlike Clair the themes aren't as obvious from the beginning and it doesn't undermine them by the end. It also tells the story in a way that actually utilizes the video game medium. You could watch the cutscenes of Clair Obscur and experience the story the same way you would as someone who played the game for the most part.
The anime is actually proof that Nier: Automata heavily relies on being a game. For example deleting your save files feels like an actual sacrifice because you have to actually destroy something you've worked on yourself for hours. That can't be said about Clair Obscur. You wouldn't lose anything from the story by just watching the cutscenes.
