Give it to me straight, Anon Babble. is it better than windows for gaming?

No.

linux has no games

No, windows is still better if you play with Nvidia or need kernel-level anti-cheat for your multislop

Depends on your vidya taste. As others said certain anti cheats don't work. You have to check them one by one. Backward compatibility is better. On Windows if a game doesn't run, you can't do much about it, while on Linux you can remove to the game's prefix to try some stuff to make it run. Linux with KDE is closer to the golden age of Windows than modern Windows is.
I use Nvidia and it works on my machine

you can remove to the game's prefix

What the fuck kind of gobbledygook is that? Also, you'd be hard pressed to find a game you couldn't run on Windows 11 either natively (pretty much anything 32/64-bit or with PCem/ScummVM/something.

Depends on the game, but usually it's 1 to 5 percent slower than windows going by fps.

But it's your computer without all the telemetry and spyware...........

I fucking love gaming on Linux. I even got pirating working on it too

i moved to linux in 2020 when proton was in good shape and it only got better and better
but i still would not recommend it to normalfags
if you're unhappy with windows and you don't care that some games and software might not work then sure, give it a try

better

You're asking the wrong question. Or, rather, if you're asking that question in that way, then the answer for you is probably "no".
You want a straight answer? Here it is. Linux gaming is for people who don't want to use Windows but also don't want to give up video games. Are you looking to ditch Windows? If so, then good news: Linux can probably run most of the games you like. However, if you're happy with Windows for gaming, then there is absolutely no reason for you to switch to another operating system.

it's about the same with some games that dont work at all
requires alot of tweaking for the first time though, don't listen to anyone that tell you it "just works"

No

you forgot to mention vulkan shits on directX and playing on Linux through proton is actually less stuttery than playing natively on windows for some games

I don't even play games on Windows that use Vulkan. That's terrorist technology.

Basically Proton makes a fake windows folder for each game. Removing that is essential to a Windows reinstall, it's just that this whole process is less than 10 sec on Linux.

Also, you'd be hard pressed to find a game you couldn't run on Windows 11 either natively (pretty much anything 32/64-bit or with PCem/ScummVM/something.

Sometimes games refuse to run on Windows at all, sometimes after first run. Castle Crashers and HuniePop are good example.

If you only play modern (last 10-15 years) and well known games and don't play multiplayer yes Linux is either better or the same as windows.
If you like to play old shit FUCK NO. You don't know what hell is until you waste several hours trying to get an old japanese VN to work on linux

The point of an operating system is to stay out of your way.

Gaymen on Linux is less intrusive. It doesn't have 10 popup asking me to rate my experience using it, check out it's latest gimmick feature, switch to it's preferred browser, updates or to turn on game mode. I mostly play games with native linux builds and the few games that aren't native like Arma Reforger works better than on 11. My buddy's on there who have 11 would all have random crashes and I never had one.

It isn't better but the fact that it's equal or only slightly worse than Windows these days (thanks almost entirely in part to WINE and Proton) is super fucking good.

It doesn't have 10 popup asking me to rate my experience using it, check out it's latest gimmick feature, switch to it's preferred browser, updates or to turn on game mode

Never experienced this on windows

I use Nvidia and it works on my machine

It's useable, but highly unstable, especially in multi-monitor setups. I do not recommend using Linux to anyone with an Nvidia GPU unless they are absolutely fed up with Windows. Because watching NVIDIA fail to fix a widely reported multi-year long open issue while introducing new regressions into their driver every other update is exceedingly frustrating. Completely random full monitor display output freezes that require a full system reboot that has been ongoing for over a year takes a tole on a person.

I got a deck to ease my way into Linux, so far I had no issues. Pirating takes a few more steps than on windows but otherwise it's the same. Valve shit is doing a lot of the back-end to make it work or whatever

My old japanese VNs just work, sounds like a skill issue on your part. The most tinkering I had to do is enable system-wide MIDI support for some early-90s games.

linux is is only free if your time is worthless
that's why over 95% of pc gamers are on windows

Let's actually see here.

45 mins to install Windows, install the programs you want and debloat

20 mins to install Fedora, install the programs you want

Sounds like I do value my time Microcuck.

If you're using windows, you're not a real gamer, simple as.

So stay on Windows, be happy, and stop pooping your pants every time you see a penguin thread.
I hope this helps.

but I was just answering OP's question

That's okay; OP wasn't asking in good faith anyway.

Good for you if the small number of VNs you tried worked*, too bad that's not true at all for the majority of them.
*probably didn't really work at all since even with a lot of tweaking is next to impossible to get old VNs to have proper audio/text rendering/some other form of weird glitch related to ultra specific region settings

Name 5 that didn't work for you.

YU-NO
True Love
Almost all the old rance games
But honestly my answer might as well be every single one of them that hasn't been officially released or re-released on steam over the last two decades. Oh and that's all without any attempts to install translation patches or cracks for games with DRM.
Even when 90% of the thing works fine it will have one weird issue with audio desyncing or just glitching out or whatever the fuck else. I just gave up on trying to find a fix and wasting my time and started dualbooting when I want to play that shit.

Yeah

Almost all the old rance games

Too bad Raj, I have old Rance games installed. Better luck next thread.

actually running something pre-32bit windows might be tricky on wine. iirc dosbox will run your pc98 versions though.

also tss.asenheim.org/ has true love and i think thats cool havent played in a million years.

tell this to linux vegans begging everyone to join their tranny cult every time they can

I've never had a steam game not play on Linux
They use some emulator bullshit, works perfectly

i was planning on getting a 9070 cuz i want a bigscreen beyond and it only supports amd but the prices are too high atm

i kinda hope that the linux wisdom applies literally anywhere else so windows can finally die. dont care if you're using steamOS or whatever as long as it ain't windows.

I don't use Linux because I need to use CAD programs on Windows. It's just not for me.

dance.gif - 346x367, 329.89K

Games run faster and there are more games on linux. Try playing that ps3 racing game for example, it doesn't work properly on the office os.

I forced myself to learn FreeCAD. It's not so bad for simple things.

Linux is better if you want to feel like you own your PC rather than just license one out from Microsoft. If you want your PC to feel more like a console where you just turn it on press play and it works then Windows is better. With Linux you will have troubles one way or another, if you don't find tinkering with your PC fun then better stick with Windows

Linux is 1,000,000,000 times better than windows for gaming. But 1,000,000,000 times 0 is still 0. Buy a Switch 2 you cheap faggot.

I forced myself to cope with something worse, it's bad but not THAT bad if you keep the expectations low

this is why linux users are like vegans, offering a shitty alternative full of compromises for no real benefit beyond a false sense of accomplishment from being part of a cult

I'll use FreeCAD if it means I can ditch windows. Solidworks isn't worth it and I'm only using cad for hobby projects.

thats 100% true, when vegans are saying

it tastes just like real meat

or something, thats lies. the knockoffs are never good enough. but if you bypass all the windows shit and just solve the problem instead of trying to copycat it always wins out.

steam / bottles / lutris runs like 90% of games, and 100% of games i play, using windows at this point is just cuckoldry with extra steps

No.
That it works as well it does is remarkable. If it is in the steam library getting proton to work is relatively simple. Things that aren't take alot more effort. You decent if you want to spend an afternoon troubleshooting that or not.

It has been over a year since I've used linux Nvidia drivers were still shit. I can get 200+ average fps on warframe on windows I was average 100-120 fps when using linux. The open world areas would dip as low as 40fps. Totally playable due to the online nature of the game and It was the main game I was playing at the time at getting 50% of normal performance wasn't worth it. Now you would have to pay me to convince to ever touch warframe again. I don't want to delete my account because of how much time I put into it. Right now I would not regret deleting if I did.

WINDOWS JUST WORKS

WHAT?

I SAID WINDOWS JUST WORKS

is it better than windows for gaming?

Many games will not run on linux yet but the ones that do often do it better.

on some games, using the exact same hardware, linux is just higher frame rates. I know this sounds crazy but it's how windows works, it's less efficient.

I'm building a new pc/nas and I'll use proxmox and install windows and linux and other things. this way I can play on both. I think just using one operating system on your computer is just limiting your options.
