Characters being silent in scenes is used brilliantly for this exact reason. You can see him struggling with his choice. He knows what's right deep down, but he's also having his own crisis in his head. Seeing his mother after the fight coughing, withering and dying from prolonged stay in the canvas further reinforces his goals.

When he died, his family entered his Canvas and introduced their fucked up family dynamics. While Child Verso loved all the new addition and considers them alive, he now has to paint all the constant suffering and his family bullshit. He has become tired of painting, wants it all to end. Sure, some might say he bears a responsibility to the people of the Canvas but Painters don't really care about that.

Clea, a prodigy Paintress, doesn't care about painted people at all. She doesn't think they have a soul or are alive in general. Hence she feels comfortable fucking with them so much. At the end of the day, Painted Verso and Child Verso chose to end the Canvas because they could and they were tired damning the painted people in the process. Their suffering ends and his family can deal with their bullshit elsewhere since they ruined his escape. It can be considered incredibly selfish but that's just the way it is.

I've been complaining about how this ending makes sure we won't have another story in Lumiere, but, thinking about it, we rarely get more than one story in a JRPG setting.

That means the painters are basically gods, and Aline has painted hundreds of worlds according to the game.
