I still don't know why they changed him from the Alpha. It seemed he was less of a hero type back then and more of a junkie who needed Mizora for his fix. Like all the hero stuff was a front. Not technically pure evil but better than the goody two shoes what we got.

BG3 has bad companions in general. It's pile of DnD OCs by devs in a homebrew module/campaign without proper focus on story.
Especially if you play custom character. You are nobody doing nothing but doing things your companions want.

The evil companions are the only good ones. Karlach is reddit. Wyll is boring. Gale is tolerable in that you can berate him for lying to you constantly and the story establishes he's a fuckup.

Wyll was clearly their favorite for players to pick an MC since he starts with an effective CHA class and has a more traditional RPG story attached to him. Even then I think Gale is a more popular MC. I think it's because he's white.

Several party members were rewritten to match certain 'player tropes'. Wyll is the new player who the DMis sorta going soft on and is just creating plot trails for him to pick up after the initial establishing sessions.
Hell even the Class fits; Warlocks are the easiest Caster with the most opportunities for DM intervention.

All the BG3 companions are pretty boring to be honest. I'm really just indifferent to all of them. Which fucking sucks. If I like a character, the writer did a good job. Likewise, if I dislike a character, the author also did a great job, if his intention was to make me dislike him, and maybe make others like him. Indifference is the biggest issue. Because I just don't give a fuck, and every character becomes boring.

As the other anon said, he's boring. Karlach is borderline tolerable and I just picked her for roster diversity. Shart is extremely predictable but she's also the only cleric so she gets a slot. The rest were OCs for a friend and myself. I guess Laezel isn't really horrible but again, she does nothing interesting.

They changed him because he was kind of a smarmy dick, that would have certainly grown over the following acts, but because it was only act 1 in early access a lot of people walked away thinking he was very annoying. So they rewrote him to be more likeable, which just ended up with him having no spice, so while he's now likeable, he's just boring. Like vanilla. Also keep in mind they technically changed everyone from EA a lot, Wyll just got the worst of it because he was the character that was last worked on before 1.0.
Gonna be honest I much prefer final Karlach. The concept of an unstoppable berserker finally escaping Hell and becoming a gold-hearted friend to all that is good because they know they only have a short time to live is a lovely concept compared to yet another seasoned warrior that has suffered in war trope. Current Karlach pairs comedy with tragedy.
