Black Souls 2 is fucking fantastic, but it's really not a good JRPG. It's a JRPGified Soulslike. As far as JRPGs are concerned, it's somewhere in the middle ranking-wise. Especially DLC3, which turns it into a fucking puzzle game.
I am still in awe that it was balanced in such a way you can true soul-level 1 the DLC though.

FFX is better by default since everything even remotely good about this game is taken from it.

BG3 and DOS2 don't have reaction elements, but they're better balanced, so winning big battles with smarts and strategy still feels very satisfying. The animations are slick too.

The Japanese games are mostly about grinding trash mobs and steamrolling bosses though. Though, Bravely Default 2 (yes, the hated one, people really dislike the story) has pretty tough boss fights with good soundtracks.

I mostly steamrolled through the bosses, I can recall maybe 3 deaths on the hardest difficulty. And I didn't even use the broken shit like godspeed strike and I think the hunter/huntress class.
The most trouble I had with the bosses was with MGQ: P, where the Paradox difficulty balancing is fucking horrible. Early game bosses are downright impossible to defeat without grinding or RNG, and I'm not exaggerating here. You don't get enough tools to overcome them without grinding.

Or the priest guy who just starts spamming a massive fire AoE spell non-stop in his last phase that is impossible to push through with healing. Or Bravebearer who gets more turns any time you do literally anything, and then rapes the whole party with gravity spam. You can't just throw yourself at these kinds of bosses, you have to stop and think "how tf do I win this".

Would've added more JRPGs, but those I usually emulate or play on my console (I played Bravely Default 2 and Triangle Strategy on my Switch, for instance).

I recall the fights being messy, but ultimately being unable to die due to healing/buffs. The Adam Hall of Tribulation fight made me eat shit, but only because I was severely underleveled, I hardly died on any of the story encounters. Bravely Default 1 was much more bullshit, especially the fat alchemist guy, whatever his name was.

That's a flaw of video games in general, they don't trust the player to make certain connections on their own, they tell the players how they should feel instead of just showing the events and letting the players experience them on their own and figure things out from contextual clues. They're filled with constant chatter in places where E33 opts for silence. Note how Gustave doesn't utter a word from the beach sequence up until his attempted suicide. Where other games talk down to the player through loredumps and constant explanations, E33 naturally incorporates lore into its naturalistic dialogue, and even intentionally withholds information from the player. Its cutscenes feel like a proper film instead of a marvel flick.
