Vanessa's mansion in Hat In Time

Layers Of Fear 2023 in VR , last month.
plenty of scary momentss that arent jumpscares, some of them are in total silence

Eversion on first play

Alien Rogue Incursion, gets scary whn you're out of ammo and being hunted by three Xenos

But what if he has his mouth closed?

My poor bedbugs have to survive off my excessive orgasms I jerk out in bed before going to sleep and when waking up.

the bazaar scares me everytime im forced to hit random enchant

Back when F.E.A.R was new it had me in extreme suspense right until Alma showed up for the first time. After that it was just another shooting game.

Silent Hill 2 Remake has cockroaches with ultra realistic animations, hordes of them crawling around and grooming themselves on kitchen walls and they scurry away when you shine your light on them. Genuinely made my skin crawl.

I'm afraid of ticks and man do I love video games.

Shut your fucking mouth

Nothing can be scary without jump scares

Outer wilds has a bit of a jump scare but even without it parts of that game are scawy

Amnesia the Bunker is the most viscerally terrifying game I've ever played. There's no other video game monster that scares me quite as much as seeing the beast charging at me from across the room, but then I've always been weak to Frictional's monsters.

the weird forest in RDR2. I was hearing whispering and didnt think it was coming from the game and was genuine freaked out I didnt expect to get horror elements in a cowboy game

Rat King in TLoU2

i thought it was really scary until i figured out all the audio cues. could've done with a little less predictablity.

That guy was more cool than scary, I think I remember the first time you encounter stalkers being super spooky though.

not "scared" like jumped out of my chair screaming in terror scared, but actually frightened and like "oh hell nah" those monsters in RE7

Yeah, it can become a little predictable, but you can fix that by cranking the difficulty to shell shock.

Queen Vanessa's Manor in a Hat in Time. Unironically scarier than a lot of horror games.

I have arachnophobia so I'm fucked whenever I see a large enough spider in a game but I spoil most games I play so I don't run into shit like that. Also fuck bedbugs, as someone who had to deal with those bastards for half a decade and only finally found peace due to moving and getting completely new shit those bastards will never make you have a good night sleep ever again without feeling paranoid. Goddamn terrorist bugs...

Absolutely. Nothing makes me sweat like burning through all my chaos orbs just to end up with “Adds Fire Damage” for the 10th time. The real horror is realizing you’ll never hit “prefixes cannot be changed” again in this lifetime.

That nigga in irithryll dungeon. You know the one.
I don't count it as a jumpscare because I always know it's coming and yet it makes my heart miss a beat whenever I loot him.

Jump scares are not scary, they are startling. There's a huge difference.

right now

+1 to this. It's the first game in many years where I actually felt so uncomfortable playing it that I had to turn it off.

Have you played RE7 in VR before? Those monsters are so tall up close. It is very threatening.

AAAAAAA

The encounter was completely unexpected, he's presented in a horrifying way (you can feel his weight/size and he has nasty kill animations), only uses instakill attacks in a game that usually gives you a few ways to get out of those. More importantly the area you fight him in is hard for you to navigate but he just powers through obstacles - my heart rate jumped the first time he burst through a wall as I was preparing for him to enter through the door. Then when you do enough damage the Stalker part detaches from him and makes the fight even worse

Waterwraith in Pikmin freaked me out the first time i encountered it

Big chungus

this game is great because it's (randomely generated) level-based so you truly have reasons to fear dying as it reset all your progress. Also there is A LOT of content.
In some ways it's somewhat arcade-y

Yes. Come to me.

CP2077 (pre-DLC), made my system crash so bad I had to refresh BIOS to boot back.

Soma &
The Outer Wilds
Cosmic and existential horror are something else man.

There is nothing wrong with jump scares

soma

having to kill the little guy who's helping you to scavenge his parts

Give me a million jumpscares over this man
