The problem at large is that while upgrades are being made, developers have not acclimated to the changes. We have seen a trend where with each new console generation cost in software production increases and that is passed onto the costumer at a rate where it is not a viable business model.
The Switch 2 already makes no sense.
My parents would had never gifted me a $400 console when I was 8 let alone pay the online tax and let's top it all with games that are now $80 and let's not ask about special or collector's editions.

Parents are not willing to spend more than $250 on a game console for children especially during a recession and consoles back then had more impactful titles and they were a plenty. Now the standard game dev cycle for anything is about 6 years which is ludicrous.

For context; Bioshock Infinite took 6 years and internally was seen as a doomed project.

That is a massive problem as well, but we basically peaked at what we did during 40 years to improve chips.
It was just a "we find a way to make an even more detailed mask, we project it down and make sure our equipment can align the masks well enough", rinse and repeat and more or less every 18 months you got twice the transistors on the same space.
That's over, not because we can't project any smaller, but because electrons start to teleport around at the scale we are.
So now you need individual tweaks, improvement in transistor layouts, more layers all that shit.
