What's the optimal gaming resolution in 2025 and why is it still 1080p?
What's the optimal gaming resolution in 2025 and why is it still 1080p?
Modern games are made with mandatory TAA in mind, and TAA simply sucks on 1080p.
who the fuck cares about new games
That's beside the point.
320x240.
20 years ago 1080p looked like 1080p.
Today, 1080p looks like 720p because of all the corner-cutting and temporal rendering. Realistically 1440p is the new 1080p.
4k obviously.
320x200
fix'd
This is all you need for video games
2K for games that I want to run at 120-240fps
4K for games that I'm okay running at 60-120fps
Once you go 4k you can't go back. Everything else looks so low detail and unstable. But 4k is hard to run and gaming is in such a shit state that it isn't really worth buying a computer that runs well at 4k.
4K with DLSS looks better than 1080p
Once you go 4k you can't go back. Everything else looks so low detail and unstable
Gonna call bullshit on that one. Downscaling to 1440p from 4K isn't very noticeable.
I play my PS5 games on a 4K tv because you can't really control the settings in those games anyway besides performance/quality and if performance doesn't maintain a solid framerate I just put it on quality. On my PC I use a 1440p 240hz monitor.
1080p with DLAA actually looks decent. If you have the performance headroom you can use DLDSR to make it look even better.
with DLSS
kys
I can buy 3x good 1080p monitors and enjoy maximum productivity for the price of 1x good 1440p screen.
4k
Genuinely retarded for video games and desktop general use.
dilate
Video games in 2025 are unplayable without DLSS unless you're from the future and playing them on hardware from 2035.
the older I get the less I give a shit about making the games I play look as good as possible. As long as it looks good enough it's fine by me, I am not going to notice most of the changes with more advanced settings anyways and I wouldn't care either.
I have a 4090 and play new games at 2K/120fps just fine with zero upscaling of any kind.
Forces DLAA in you're path
This image is extremely retarded, that's not how resolution works
What the hell is even the point of buying Nvidia if you're not going to use dlss/dlaa?
Certain games like Oblivion Remastered can not be played at that resolution and frame rate constantly. DF made a video on the game with the literal most powerful GPU and CPU in the market and the game can't even average more than 100 fps in the open world at 1080p on Medium settings. There are other similarly horribly optimized games and things are just going to get worse.
1080p DLAA looks worse than 4K DLSS Performance mode.
I have some money to spare so I was considering getting a 1440p or a 4k monitor. But 4k seems to be so taxing, I kinda lost interest.
Is 1440p a noticeable jump from 1080? I feel like it's really mostly marketing talk.
1080p looked perfectly fine for games from the PS3 and PS4 gen. Why does it look so shit now? Why did they do this?
Do you already have a GPU that can play 4K games? Get 4K.
Otherwise with how retarded monitors and GPUs are right now, just get 1440p.
i bought a 4k monitor and regret it because my frames got raped
based
TAA happened. It's unironically better to upscale from a lower resolution than to play at native with TAA.
I don't care either way, the images you post out you as an actually retarded person though.
1440p is good enough
You don't have a 4k monitor. Anyone with a 4k monitor can tell you that 4K DLSS Performance looks better than monitor upscaled 1080p.
I would say 1440p is acceptable for now. Proper 4K probably wont really be a consistent thing until the PS6 gen.
This image is extremely retarded, that's not how resolution works
It's exactly how it works. 1080p upscaled with DLSS (or FSR4) to 4k looks vastly better than native 1080p. Hell even 720p upscaled to 4k looks slightly better than 1080p native. Of course I could go tell you to go see for yourself, but I know you don't have a 4k monitor.
dlss shits the bed when it comes to far away shit. Blurry is an understatement
Still better than 1080p native
It's unironically better to upscale from a lower resolution than to play at native with TAA.
Despite TAA being ass, I still don't see myself accepting AI guessing at how things should be rendered anytime soon. Even if gets plenty right, just don't want to take my chances with it. Perhaps when the singularity is achieved.
I've always bought Nvidia all my life, it's just what I'm used to and they tend to have the best driver support for games, especially shiny particle effects and shit (which I'm a sucker for) since they bribe the fuck out of publishers and developers for exclusive optimizations and feature support in games. I did switch away from Intel, though, because they started to suck major dick in the CPU space, especially for gaming.
I average 80-100fps on my rig in Oblivion Remastered at 1440p in open spaces and well over 100fps in dungeons and caves. All upscaling and AA disabled. In either case, the framerate is consistent enough that it looks totally smooth and doesn't stutter or drop abruptly, so it's never a problem and I don't even notice the framerate fluctuating.
I got a 4k monitor to play Brood War
It's fucking awesome
The "AI" is a gimmick. It's just an algorithm that uses vectors encoded in the form of a neural network. It's recreating a bunch of directional lines from a database. It's not like AI image generation.
posting still images to compare moving pictures
????
dlss shits the bed when it comes to far away shit
As does 1080p.
gaming resolution has nothing to do with the year. It's more about the hardware and the game. For action games resolution barely matters. For strategy and simulation games, the bigger the better. When it comes to hardware, for anything below 24 inches 1080p is the only answer. For 24 inches and up to 32, 1440p is the sweet spot. For 32 inches and above you gotta go 4k.
1440p at 32" is the same pixel density as 24" 1080p.
that is correct
1440p if you care about 100+ FPS
4k if you are fine with 60 or got lucky to buy a 4090 or 5XXX series. Or I guess lower stuff down to low/medium. You will run into VRAM issues and need to fix it with framegen or just having alot of VRAM like 4090/5090
That's why I have a 27" 1440p monitor. For even better pixel density.
1080p/1440p is still the master race, the difference in many games is extremely minor so you can go down to gain a sizable increase in FPS if you need it.
4K is such a shit meme, probably good if you're on a gigantic TV but for a 28" monitor you truly don't need that shit its WAY better to go for a 240hz refresh rate instead.
27" 1440p's pixel density is similar to 42" 4K
Good advertisement for TAA. SMAA looks inffective. Lines break, aliasing is apparent. Disgusting.
Why wouldn't you just get a 4k 240hz monitor instead?
Waste of money, bad technology. Too small. Burn in.
Comparing antialiasing through still images, especially when temporal techniques are in the mix, is pointless. The weaknesses of legacy antialiasing methods like FXAA or SMAA are visible during motion, precisely what images cannot show.
I've had(have) several 4k screens. 1080 multi monitor for a productivity focus or 1440p for if all you care about is video gaymes is the way.
You can't even tell the difference between 1440p and 4k until you get to big screen tv sizes, and even then up to a certain point you have to be like 2 feet away at most.
Also still images of a YouTube video is the worst possible way to compare this too, you are a retard or have never used any of the relevant tech.
nigger nigger nigger faggot nigger nigger
Why are you lying? Anyone with a 4k monitor knows you're lying. The screenshots showing the actual pixels show you are lying.
32" is the largest you should be using 4k at.
Yeah well you're going to be lying when you have to answer as to whether or not you liked me brutally dominating you and destroying your asshole.
Im going for 24 inch 4k ultrafine, wish me luck. I want to see individual pores
not really some games look real nice others are total shit. Mostly anything in unreal5 looks really fuzzy and muddy on a 1080p screen. Expedition33, stalker 2 look bad oblivion looks nice and crisp
I have a 1080p screen and E33 just looks like how Bloodborne did on PS4. I get 60fps on High though so whatever, it works.
