That game came out really late in the PS1's lifetime and was competing with legitimately good JRPG's like Paper Mario and Skies of Arcadia and Vagrant Story.

I don't remember them being particularly egregious but I also played it when the PS1 was still a relevant console and since then I've just emulated it every few years.
I don't know why, but my most positive memories of this game always come from the boat ride. I'm sure a lot of people really fucking hate that sequence because its really long and full of just talking. But it was always great getting a feel for the characters, hearing them get a moment to sort of wax poetic for a bit. Its incredibly comfy.
I think most of Anon Babble is too young to have played or know anything about this game at this point.

Its just a long sequence of conversations. You get to see some characters that don't really interact together talk one on one. The whole thing is comfy vibes. There's a mini game in there about chopping vegetables too.
Immediately afterwards is easily the WORST sequence in the game, the ghost ship, so I can understand blocking it out of your memory.
Its just showing off the game strengths, which is mostly its writing above anything it does mechanically or visually.

i played LOD when I was a kid too... why the fuck does everyone hype it up? It wasn't anywhere NEAR as good as its contemporaries.
If Sony were smart, IF being the operative word, they'd immediately dump money into the Expedition 33 devs to remake the game. Considering LoD was one of the inspirations, and that they have a solid grasp on implementation of multiple systems (including separate mechanics per playable character) they'd be able to crank out a game that could absolutely capitalize on the cult classic status of LoD alongside drawing in an entirely new crowd with the people who loved Baguette Depression game.
Of course this is Sony so even if they did they'd fuck it up somehow through forced exclusivity and having to stick so stringently to the OG that it'd play and look like dogshit.

I am currently playing through Legend of Dragoon and the key things I'm noticing is that most of my entertainment is coming from the godawful writing and translation of that writing, and that exp gains are so heavily loaded towards boss fights that the RPG progression is basically a milestone system. It also has the same flaw that most PS1 JRPGs have, which is that the gameplay pacing is slow as molasses. The timing based combos are simplistic enough that it doesn't really add anything to the basic JRPG formula either.
On disc one right now, and it's a 5/10. Also the tanky guy is useless.
That and she was your dads former fuck-friend which is a weird premise for the mystery waifu they hand the player at the start of the game.
Yeah, PS1 load times and the frustratingly high encounter rate haven't made this game age well.

Lohan is an annoyingly long section and the music is awful. Running back and forth from it to save Shana from the poison is also annoying. That whole part of disk 1 is definitely pretty weak.
As you get more additions they get progressively longer and more complicated. So you might find them more engaging as you get further. Off the top of my head, Meru, Albert, and Haschel have the longest and hardest ones.
Kongol, the big tank, is fun but easily the least fleshed out character. If you want to keep using him, get his dragoon in disc 2 by coming back to the city your image is from and talking to the guy who sold you the pot. This is easily missable because you never have to go back to that city for any reason.
The writing is the best part of LoD and you haven't really cracked the best parts of it yet. So keep at it.
Also don't invest in Shana, the archer, at all. You lose her before the final battle and never get her back as a party member. She gets replaced, like Lavitz, but its still a downgradeMiranda is a cunt and always will be

Dart/Kongol/Meru is actually pretty solid if you know what you're doing. Meru's final Addition, though—damn. It demands full concentration to not miss that last hit. Kongol’s are slow as hell, but the payoff is beefy if you stick it out. I liked the balance: Dart as the consistent DPS, Kongol for meatshield/literal heavy hitter, and Meru as your nuke/healer once her Dragoon got going. It ain't conventional, but it gets the job done.
