OBR did bare minimal changes to attributes and it fixed the entire system. Skyrim's dumbing down of mechanics is just Bethesda admitting they can't consistently make logical decisions. Look at Starfield, a game that brought back procedural generation after Oblivion was lambasted so hard for it that they went back to handcrafted dungeons in Skyrim.

The wild part is Fallout 3's system was near perfect, it just needed tweaking in the perks department. Something New Vegas did by instead shifting perks away from flat +5 skill bonuses to more notable bonus effect perks. All Bethesda needed to do was imitate that and every future game would be golden, yet they constantly need to reinvent the wheel for the worst every time. Fallout 4's system was passable, but ended up scooting back into lame damage boosts. Starfield had the worst of both words, you had to reach milestones to even get the perk upgrades.
You can be comically rich in Oblivion abusing only Alchemy within an hour.

You can slap them on any armor piece and you can make your character broken in any way you want.
I just wish they let you choose sigil stones because 90% of the people save scum before taking them to get the desired effect.
Although I believe the sigil stones still don’t have enchantments like 100 weakness to element, command creature/humanoid etc for those you have to use the normal enchanting tables.
But in general the magicka enchantments are insane and it’s pretty much what almost everyone goes for especially if they’re playing a mage.
Although spell making is so strong in this game that even non mage character would want more magicka. After all you can cast restoration spells like boosting your attributes.

I think Oblivion's writing is sharply superior to Skyrim's. I was 100% invested by the end here. In Skyrim it was very much just going through the motions. Sovngarde aka Valhalla was pretty cool I guess, but that's just a cool setting not a cool story beat or anything. I think the Mankar Cameron shit was awesome. Well what I meant by "you" are his followers. I didn't explain it all. You have to first die before your soul goes to Mankar's realm. You, as the player, go into that realm and kill Mankar Cameron and destroy that realm, so whether or not your character does that ritual or not doesn't matter for you. That pocket reality gets destroyed.
BUT... lore wise, if you do that ritual and then die, presumably that is where the hero of kvatch's soul ends up, as long as you haven't killed Mankar Cameron yet. So idk lol. Of course, the game just makes you reload your save when you die under that circumstance so we wouldn't see that anyway.

A lot of the skills in daggerfall that were removed were actually useless, like some of the language skills. Climbing was cool though. I actually wish morrowind had language skills and climbing but i prefer hand placed stuff over procedural for these sorts of games.
Procedural might make 2nd playthroughs better, and keep people from ruining their playthrough by looking everything up, but i can play without looking stuff up and i would rather my first playthrough be as good as possible than worry about playing a game designed around 2nd playthroughs.

Enemy mace guy 1 shotting me in an unavoidable kill cam because the game calculates whether you die or not based on wheen he starts the 4 second wind up is actually the antithesis of gameplay. I went glass cannon mode and suddenly realized I cant use skill to dodge enemies attacks because the game pulls me into an unavoidable cinematic where I die when enemies get close before they even start their attack.

This makes me think bethesda is simply incompetent. The obvious solution to simplifying the game and making it more action oriented and casual friendly is to reduce the power creep of stats, not remove them as choices. Then you add simple weapon move sets as a standard for weapons, like thrust attacks or large sweeps, simple little things so people who play on expert can game around with the game beyond just run in to attack and out before NPC attack lands.
Imagine a lvl 1 has 100 HP and an iron sword that does 5 damage. Finds a steal sword that does 8 damage, an upgrade. Finds an mithril sword that does 9 damage and weighs 1/4 of steel. is now lvl 10, has 120 hp and 40% damage reduction because hes putting points into HP and going fighter route. There is no level scaling in the game because stats are tighter so there doesnt need to be. Perks give quality of life things and some new moves instead of % damage bonuses for everything. lvl 1 bandit still does respectable damage and can be dangerous if you arent paying attention. lvl 10 mobs are dangerous but doable. High level enemies are harder but not impossible and dont 1 shot you, they feel dangerous like yopu should come back later but doable with consumes or if you outskill it.
The Elder Scrolls series, to me, is Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. Sorry boomer boy. I might, one day, go back and play the older ES games, but for now I think I'm good.

I’ve never seen Skyrim NPCs fight over items I drop, I’ve only seen one NPC pick up the item and then put it back into my inventory forcing me to drop it again further away from them.

Anyways its possible to have stats that dont have wild swings like Elder scrolls but still have meaningful power increases with levels. Level scaling in Elder scrolls is just a symptom of their shitty stat system, an actual good ARPG wouldnt even feel the need for level scaling.
Go play a game like Conan Exiles and tell me leveling up doesnt feel meaningful. Its an Open world RPG with better stat system and better combat than Skyrim.

The DLCs are all cosmetics, except for the isle of sipta which is a whole different map not even connected to main game, its an alternate map with a different sort of playstyle ( i havent even bought that one)
Corruption mechanic is relevant in the game now, you can make corrupted builds, some high level sorceries require you to be corrupted to a certain point to cast them if you want to go down the high lvl sorcery route.
