anime, manga, movies, and games assumed that VR would be the standard way to play all games in the future.
VR flops in real life and is almost a completely dead gaming peripheral.
What happened?

I have no idea. Even the Quest 2, as limited and shit in so many aspects as it is, is really dope.
I used a friend's quest 3 and holy shit, that thing is next level.
The 1080p color camera is a game changer for using it as a virtual monitor.
They flopped because you touch yourself at night.
What's wrong with touching yourself at night
VR porn is surpassing VR gaming, ironically enough.
for using it as a virtual monitor
Yeah that's still just a LARP. Image just isn't clear enough to comfortably read text on Q3. Sure you CAN strain your eyes and read but would you actually WANT to if you have other options? No you wouldn't
VR porn gaming is as dead as normal VR gaming, all decent porn games are over half a decade old
Virtamate was supposed to be just the first step... At this rate it will be unmatched forever
Best usage case for the Quest 3 is just a monitor.
I already have a monitor.
Not best. It's the thing I wanted to do with my quest 2 that I couldn't. With the quest 3, I can have all the virtual monitors and still see the world around me in a decent resolution, and in color.
It works so god damn well. Or at least it did for the little time I tried it.
Because "VR" is sticking a monitor to your face with waggle support, not VIRTUAL REALITY.
VR Developers with entirely too high demands and entirely too low quality products shot the platform in the chest.
Facebook shot the developers in the back of the head and proceeded to stab VR 37 times in the chest.
The idea that VR "Replaces" standard games and displays was always a retarded idea.
Oh and the people who think that VR should be some wire they stick in the back of your head that sucks your soul out are even BIGGER retards than the retards that have killed VR already
Anything trying to imitate .hack where you temporarily transfer your consciousness into the game through a headset would probably be forever illegal.
VRChat is paying my bills thoughbeit.
What happened?
"Gaming" left the realm of the dork and went completely mainstream. Games receive monstrous nine-figure sums from venture capitalists to fund their creation. A cool experience is now secondary or tertiary to earning a massive return on investment and/or becoming a fad.
Every gamer my age (take a guess, picrel) has a VR headset and loves it. Yes, Alyx is the only game/proof of concept that really takes it to the level it belongs and honestly if Alyx was the only VR game I had it would still be worth it. It's that fucking good.
Do I wish every game got the Alyx treatment and was made for VR? Yes, of course I do. Do I ever expect that to happen in the current gaming landscape? Fuck no.
Oh, and of course the standard: Zuckerberg threw 8 billion dollars at meta and all he has to show for it is a global joke that no one likes. Public opinion is swayed very easily.
A big wire in your head sucking out your soul is the only way to have actual VR, though. You can get halfway there with a bunch of robot arms pulling around your limbs and projection screens, but getting pulled in half when the robots bug out sounds like less fun then being turned into zombie slave for zog.
quests having usb c only was a massive mistake
why?
What is a good headset and how beefy does a PC have to be to run it decently?
I want an IRL version of The World too, man.
But I’m seeing it ever becoming a reality.
It should at least have had native display port functionality through that instead of literally streaming through the god damn cable when using it for PCVR.
That said, wireless VR is so god damn good.
I see it as an inevitability, assuming we don't wind up in a civil world war where the proles start murdering their masters. Now, the question of if you'll be alive to see it, or if you'll be rich enough to afford it, are completely different matters.
So is that why the big triple A developers just won’t even attempt a triple A VR experience? Just not financially feasible in any way?
there is a reason why zuckerberg and tim cook both thought they were revolutionary ideas, they aren't crazy
you try one and you realize that this is fucking magic
it's just too early but it's happening organically with vrchat and roblox and fortnite
I mean the VR that anime, manga and games has, besides a bunch of other media of course, is the kind which is the step or several up from our current VR. Whether or not that will ever actually be feasible to do something like a full-dive where you are actually in a virtual game world in an avatar you move with your mind while your body is in the real world now that is a whole other question. Might even be impossible or technically so unfeasible that no one will bother, or there will be just a couple of games or companies who do something with full-dive and everyone else just makes do with the cheaper alternative.
Personally there hasn't been anything in VR that has made me even think about buying into it.
Why would you spend millions of dollars on something where the maximum possible marketshare you could ever attain is sub 1%?
It makes zero sense, the only reason Alyx was made is because it was cheap, re-used abandoned shit from HL3, and Valve wanted a killer app to sell their awful headset.
The only afforable options are Quest 3 or PSVR2 with the PC adapter if you absolutely need display port
how beefy does a PC have to be to run it decently?
PCVR has been stagnant for years and most VR games are made to run on the inbuilt Quest chip. For the few more demanding titles something like a 4070 should be good enough for 90hz
I foresee government regulation making games full dive your consciousness not a thing. Probably going to mandate that games must keep you conscious in your body for safety protocols.
And I see developers even avoiding full diving to not get sued if you neglect your health and almost die.
And don’t forget people hacking the game to keep you trapped by disabling your exit/log off button.
I don't know man, I figure by the point tech advances where full-dive is possible companies will have already paved way for them to clear themselves of all responsibility if an idiot customer kills themselves during full-dive just because of not feeding or drinking etc. Like shitloads of unskippable terms of conditions when you first start up your FullDiveDildo that you have to agree one after another that just boils down the biggest issues like "By pressing Yes you and your next of kin will agree to waive all responsibility for Our Corporation if you use our tech in an unsafe manner" etc. Or there is just simply some inbuilt system that monitors your body functions and if Mr. NEET is starting to grow really weak from lack of food etc. the system just boots them out. Or better yet, the system comes with a timelimit how long you can use it for. Also for everyone that messes with their systems to bypass safety features just to be a hardcore gamer that also will waive all responsibility off the makers of the tech because clearly Mr. NEET was a fucking idiot who just wanted to die, case closed.
Why do you think the consciousness can "leave" the body to begin with?
There are 2 systems for full dive, one is completely severing outside connection and turning you into a brain in a jar, and then hooking you up to the internet instead of your nerves, and there's attenuation where you just pump signals in that are more powerful than the real world stimulus, so a guy just lies in a bed and thinks about doing things and you feed them the "correct" stimuli through a visual interface and nerve stimulation.
The idea of leaving and going somewhere else already requires you to not be human anymore. At which point you have no rights because you're a glorified brain scan running on an emulator.
He's right and I won't even deny it. It's bad business to fund VR now that the fad stage is over and META shit the bed. I personally love it and want more but I have to rely on the things fellow enthusiasts create for now.
he only reason Alyx was made
Also I think Gabe just thought it was cool. I mean when the Oculus 1 first came out Valve had native VR support for Source games and Big Picture Mode added just because it was really cool. Ever rocket jump in TF2 in VR? I don't recommend it.
It dies just not standalone. Literally all unreal 4 and up games are vr. And the shoe horned VR is 10x better than the "made for vr" slop. Vr didn't fail devs did. Real VR lives in the modding space
I'm glad I don't care about VR at all, it must suck to think you'll get new things to play and then the biggest release of the year is... modded HL2 . Wow, you can play a 20 year old game again!
Quest 3. And a dedicated router for it. I can do most on just a 1080 but I wouldn't recommend anything that doesn't have dlss today.
Do you think the current situation is also one of those “let’s wait until a major developer pumps out their massive VR title and we’ll follow suit” and no one wlll just take the plunge, keeping everyone in VR limbo?
I had fun playing yesterday
Literally every new unreal engine new game release has a vr mod with motion controls on day 1. You're only mistake was ever counting on studios to do anything but produce slop
you die in the game
you die in real life
Welcome to sword art online
How has Umemaro NOT made VR porn yet?
No, I think the current situation is that VR is circling the drain, which is where it's been for the past 5 years. Alyx put a bit more water in the sink, but nothing on the horizon is going to plug the hole.
It goes beyond catch 22, nobody owns VR so nobody makes games for it so nobody buys VR. There's a decent number of people who own VR now, but none of them use it because it's shit.
I don't think VR will see any real widespread appeal until the screens are 8k per eye (16k by regular standards), and the headsets are as cumbersome as a pair of sunshades. AR with transparent screens might be able to shift these numbers down a bit, but we're still looking at 5-10 years for tech to even approach the level of VR feasibility.
muh mods
Kill yourself, cultist.
Nothing happened. I bought a new high resolution OLED VR headset last month and a 5090 to go with it. VR is good. Currently enjoying Elite Dangerous
The googles are to damn expensive. Holly fuck. Thats half the cost of a pc build a quarter of a gaming monitor. Instead of going the console philosophy and getting the money back by VR games they did go the Smatphone way on selling on profit.
