well, from the reviews and what I have heard from friends, the one on steam is meant to be quite lacklustre

the game is all about stacking perks/passive abilities that work well together. Each monster has an ability (a passive effect like "this monster poisons when it attacks") and it can be fused with another monster to have two abilities and you have 6 monsters for a total of 12 abilities. then you have your skills (they are the spells) that can themselves be enhanced and equipment (one piece per monster) that can also be upgraded with effects. Finally, you yourself have abilities that are passives like the monster abilities.

For example, I have a monster that gives all monsters a 20% chance to cast a spell at the start of their turn per spell they know and another monster that attacks more times based on how many spells were cast. See how they'd go well together? it's that exact concept, but you get better at the game by stacking the complexity effectively.

Not part of the sale, but Coromon is decent and it's only 20 bucks.

A trend started around 2019-2020 for indies to start developing / make sequels to / shill the fuck out of their existing monster collection games because of the backlash from Dexit (The first mainline Pokedex cut).

the franchise was cool. They just needed more monsters. I really loved that the game had complex ecology and a beastiary with a variety of art. For me that was one of the greatest aspects of the game, because I really care about the monsters seeming like genuinely creatures and not meaningless JPGs.

Also, fuck the design of the Fox demon that the dev's wife designed. It looks ass, is overly sexual and on top of it of course it plays really good.

It's one of the top Digimon games along with HM outside of DW1, yes. It straight up revitalized Digimon games as a whole. That doesn't mean it's not without its issues, but if you're not up for Digivolving and Dedigivolving a bunch, Hard mode being mandatory unless you want to sleep through the game, and it being extremely strangely balanced even after the HM fixes being backported then don't touch it. It's Japan tourism simulator mixed with Digimon stories mixed with lots of VN-esque sequences for the story and side content and mostly blue or solid colored cyberspace locations rather than the typical Digital World stuff you've seen in other Digimon games.

If you are the type of person who has crazy standards you won't like any of the monster collector games outside of maybe Monster Sanctuary and Palworld. All of these games are low budget, almost all of them take inspiration from Pokemon, and they all have their issues.

Monster Crown has great spritework but is filled with glitches including overwriting and duplicated other monster movesets onto the current monster you are leveling if EXP share is on. This is still unfixed on Switch, not sure on PC, and as far as I know the Move Tutor doesn't let you learn new moves.

TemTem has some of the worst monster designs you've ever seen and has some of the worst eugenics mechanics you've ever seen.

Cassette Beasts is solid.

Disc Creatures is rudimentary but alright, more for genwunners.

World of Final Fantasy is sort of unbalanced and never wants you to split from being stacked but it's solid. The PS4 version is objectively the best one due to PC missing Sora.

Nexomon and Nexomon Extinction are solid Pokemon-esque games but they started on mobile so they have a mobile feel to them. The humor is also hit or miss, webm related.

Coromon has fantastic sprites but I've yet to play it.

Dokimon is apparently solid but it only just released.

Several of the games aren't even monster collectors.

Bugsnax being put as part of this sale makes no sense as you don't collect Snax, you donate them to the one guy, they get added to your bestiary, and that's it. The rest of the game is just body horror where people request x amount of Snax, you feed them the Snax, and they absorb it and change into that Snax.
Slime Rancher 1 and 2 are management sims with adventure components, they are not monster collectors. You basically just vacuum up slimes, slap them into enclosures, and feed them food so they crap out Plorts to sell on the galactic market while occasionally breeding two of them to get more profitable Plorts.
Tons of games are random deckbuilder games or card games, not monster collectors. You even have a game where you just design your own trading cards. Tons are also just RPGmaker games.

You are both MASSIVELY underselling the level of autism required to enjoy this game. The first couple of hours are pretty basic, enjoyable creature collector style gameplay, with you collecting creatures and slowly getting stronger. 90% of the rest of the gameplay is basically a coding exercise where you run the simulation and hope your creatures win. This isn't a bad thing, but don't try to trick normal people into buying this.

How do you anons feel about 3d creature collectors? I dont think Ive found a single (indie) one I like personally. I think its just a trap, indie devs dont have the resources or skills to make it look good. I'd take good 2d character designs over mediocre to bad 3d any day.

Nah, Coromon sucks. It's basically just a DS pokemon game with the same level of linearity but with even more sterile writing that is so bland and inoffensive at all times it's actively unpleasant, the type system is utterly retarded, the music is bad, and there's far too much shitty story and faffing about in events that involve running around and talking to people to progress.
The only positives it has are the visuals (outside of the human sprites that look terrible) and the boss fights.

Angewomon, LadyDevimon, Lillymon, Rosemon, Zephyrmon, Lilithmon, Valkyriemon and a lot more I'm forgetting are showing the goods at all times, so yeah.

WoFF is unironically one of the best monster RPGs I've ever played and it's a crime that it fell so far under the radar

It's actually doing fairly decently despite Bamco fumbling it all the time.
Card game that's by all accounts fun and decent with a digital version coming out, Survive as the most recent game and Time Stranger as the next one coming, V-Pets hitting American shores after 20 years with Monster Hunter and Godzilla crossover editions, model kits for lots of digimon(mostly humanoids, but Machinedramon is cool as fuck), and probably more I'm forgetting.
Only thing missing right now is an anime, since Ghost Game ended a few years ago.

It's way too easy and it's a SE game so the localisation is terrible, it got as much recognition as it deserved.

I wish that game played it more straight, the stacking mechanic is pretty divisive. It personally makes me like it less.

Visually it looks nice but it has a bunch of technical problems that drag it down and you have to avoid touching the monster codes entirely or you get given the equivalent of legendaries at the start of the game. I played about ten hours of it on Switch and had to stop because it had a game breaking issue where if you had EXP Share on (Something you want on) it would cause the current lead of the group to gain moves from whatever leveled that wasn't in the lead and as far as I understand it the Move Tutor later on would just teach you whatever it had in general, not what it would have learned. It also has monsters constantly spawning in walls or outside of the playable area, including shinies (Though they are much more common than in Pokemon).

The PC version is more updated than the Switch version so I don't know if they fixed the EXP Share issue there, but keep that in mind.

They're all seprate games, not remakes. But because of random dungeons and similar gameplay, they "feel" like enhanced remakes with diffrent plots.

That actually sounds fun

It's actually a pretty fun game, Princess Goblin and the Quacho Queen are best girls, it has a bunch of funny crossover scenes, there's lots of side content, and Maxima improved it quite a bit. Only downside is that Maxima ends on a cliffhanger that will only ever realistically be finished in a Kingdom Hearts game at this point.

It's not as great as you are saying it is despite being an enjoyable experience.

Past the half way point every single fight is pretty much just spamming Gravity, buffing, and then holding out for the rest of the fight until you win. There is genuinely never a reason to wap out of a Gravity lead once you get it because it's just that good.

Postgame bosses, even Alexander, are just you spamming Gravity.

Unless you are extremely rich to do the speedrunner strat of throwing expensive items at the enemy there is never a reason to not be stacked because when you're not stacked you get one-shot. The six turns means nothing when the enemy you are fighting wipes your entire group in one attack.

Every single Mirage that is single-tier like the Magitek Armors are useless because if they evolve they get massive stat buffs while those single-tier Mirages are in the middle of a tier 1 and tier 2 evolution stat-wise.

The "starter" Mirages you can get in that one dungeon early on are basically some of the best Mirages in the entire game outside of their black reskins.

Summons from what I remember are a massive waste of a turn and usually worse than just using Gravity or a -ga.

Those things that change you into other FF characters (Crysta-something) are completely and utterly pointless as there is not a single character better to use than Reynn and Lann.

To be fair, unless you downloaded Sora when 2.8 came out on PS4 you can't even use him on PS4 or Vita without piracy so there is that.

It's basically pokemon with less types and a single party level. If you like nuzlocks and want one with random maps then you'll probably like it, but don't expect anything groundbreaking.

I'm always confused on why the main complaint of the game is the dialogue. I played through both games twice and the dialogue never bored me. It isn't amazing, but still a good time, Hacker's Memory more so.

I've played 100+ hrs on each, imo there's not really any point in playing the old ones. They're pretty samey just with new shit added and ultimate is the best by far

Coromon is aggressively mediocre, it is absolutely not worth 20 bucks. I got it for like 3 bucks in a sale a while back and I could have gotten a better experience from a romhack for free. Hell, I'd recommend emulating Spectrobes over it.
