Chrono Trigger being number 1 always feels weird, like I've played it, it's good, but not particularly memorable.
Only song I even recall is the good ending theme where you fly across time which was for sure a fantastic ending, but idk about being the best.

I'm not a walking JRPG encyclopedia nor will I pretend to be, there's a lot of classic JRPGs, even franchises I've never really touched like SaGa, SMT/Persona, Tales, Phantasy Star, Star Ocean or even Pokemon.

As a standalone game it's not even a good JRPG.
As a sequel to what's regarded as one of the greatest, most polished JRPG experiences ever made, it's disrespectful dogshit.

scraps Chrono Trigger's awesome battle system and on-field encounters, that was considered fast, innovative and unique (to the point it felt better to play than most JRPGs from the next few generations, even).

replaces it with a standard JRPG battle transition with a half-assed combo system

Chrono Trigger has 6 (7) fantastic party members that all play differently/have unique skills and while not the deepest characters, have very strong chemistry and characterization and all have their time to shine in the story, dual/triple abilities that are dependent on specific characters being in the same party

Chrono Cross has 50 fucking party members, most of them barely have any unique lines in the story, 90% of them have no stakes in the story either, all party members play near the exact same because abilities are tied to customization and you customize just about anybody the same way, their innate elemental affinity isn't really important so you just pick the party member with the coolest design I guess

scraps the time travel mechanics/plot of Chrono Trigger for a line-line crossing plot, time travel is just something that happens around you in the lore but not directly to you

kills off the entire main party of Chrono Trigger flippantly and unceremoniously off screen to shit they reasonably should have been able to overcome

preachy as fuck plot about how humanity is bad/humanity is responsible for all of the evils in the world (it even blames dwarves genociding fairies on human expansionism, and the fairies fucking lecture you about how evil humanity is because the dwarves killed 90% of their population, even though humans came and saved the fairies from the dwarves)

does nothing interesting with the worldbuilding Chrono Trigger set up, like possibly more Lavoses, etc

Like, to give you an idea of how retardedly simple the cardboard cutout characters in Chrono Cross are:
The writers actually had to use a script/algorithm to give each of the characters unique accents/quirks to their dialogue.
So the writer would write a single line, an then pass it through the script, and then have 50 versions of that one line in different accents.

And they do this
with nearly every party member.
Except like 2-3.

In a normal world, this list alone would be enough to permanently discredit every single "gaming journalist".

Forced soul games don't deserve to be on the list. There's no way you can put Bravely Default 2 above Star Ocean 2, get fucking real or Lost Odyssey for that matter. I don't hate what's at the top of the list, I'll concede Persona 5 is a good game worthy of being in the top 5 at least along with FFX. My top list would be way different though, I'm one of the ones who think Breath of Fire V is the best Breath of Fire games so for me it'd go in the top ten.
