But not all VNs are like that. Saya no Uta is straight to the point. Higurashi (I REALLY recommend the first 5 or 6) or DDLC also uses the seeming slice of life bits as VITAL establisher elements.

"Filler" is a midwit take, it builds tension to have long stretches of relatively ordinary life in between the action, and those scenes are often funny and entertaining in their own right if the writer is good.
