Parry system

EVERY game needs to be an action game. There NEEDS to be dashes, i-frames, and parries.

such tough guys playing video games
you have 2 options become fat fuck neckbeard or tranny

you parry by shooting a gun

Then dont parry, retard. You're acting like it's mandatory.

just don't parry bro

despite the game being designed around it and enemies taking 10x longer to kill if you don't use parries

press roll / dodge button in time to negate all damage

Soul

press parry button in time to negate all damage

Soulless

what if instead of a "press X to not take damage" button, players just had to move their character out of the way of the attack

there are some attacks that you simply just have to run away from it in elden ring

taking 10x longer to kill if you don't use parries

lol, lmao even

if you hate parry mechanics you hate fun and videogames

Why isn't there a game where you can parry while dashing?

Offensive defense in MGRR is kind of like that, not a true parry though

Don't worry, it's apparently getting nerfed next season.

gameplay balance
same reason why in many games you cant block and run at the same time or why you can't attack while keeping a block up, an in the rare cases you can, damage is very nerfed

If devs cared about balance the game wouldn't have parries.

negate ALL damage

They all still suck because of this underlying problem.
Sekiro did right by completely removing iframes while also ensuring that parries are not overpowered by making some attacks unparryable

Sekiro's only mistake is not making parry timings more severe as your posture fills up.

I almost never used the parry in that game and it was way more fun playing like that.

Okay wait

a souls game

where you jump away from attacks

soulsslops

rollslop

parryslop

YOU ARE HERE

blockslop

dodgeslop

hyperarmorslop

reviveslop

you can parry with any weapon

it's shit

DS1 was blockslop
Bloodborne was dodgeslop

please make a game with all of those combined

But anon, how else will people seeing your trophies/ achievements know how heckin fast and perfectly timed your reflexes are? I for one want every game to be a tryhard dynamic spazfest, I'd hate for there to be more chill games to play at the end of a day

It's called Ninja Gaiden Black

metal armor

you can roll with it

Instead of rolling, it should give you more defense, like actual armor at the cost of not being able to roll.

You can roll, jump, cartwheel, and do flips in armor irl.

Parry mechanics are just glorified QTEs.

proof?

Here ye go.

Where does consumableslop fit into this?

looks fake

gets proven wrong

lol nope

More games need to have things like that

I found this game and you just parry. I'm so tried of parryslop.

17% chance to parry while wielding a sword

50% chance to counterattack on parry

Is this a parry system too?

jimmy CHADtron

stay

Git gud negro

I almost never used the parry in that game and it was way more fun playing like that.

wow sekiro looks cool i hope this inspired other developers to make games where enemies clash blades with you, react to your attacks and defense and feels like a real duel!!

that was pure monkey's paw. now every melee action game on earth has its bosses on a screen tape recorder where you just press 1 button whenever they attack

by that logic, every timed action in a game can be called a glorified QTE.
jumping at the right time in a platformer, attacking when there is a window to do so and so on.

dumb logic, absolute retard brain

introduces parries to first person shooters

Thanks Gaben!

If there's one specific timing and doing it late or early results in failure then yes it is.

trackingslop

Souls games SUCK

platformers are all just a collection of glorified QTEs, you heard it here first

anon has blessed us with his infinite wisdom

they literally don't

if you have to do an input at the right time to win then it's a QTE

ace attorney is my favorite QTE but you've got to give props to the originator

Parry slop and similar "press button to deny damage" shit is fixed with good movement

Great game for learning to actually use parrying.
Also perfect-blocking > parries. PVP be damned.

Parry system

Timed block

Iframes

Softcaps

I want Skyrim clones with better spellcasting, not more rollslop or parryslop.

actually and unironically yeah
even in i-frame fiesta games, being mindful of repositioning makes does make rolls more engaging
but the worst thing is when both options are present, yet one usually parry is plainly superiour for purely numerical reasons and NUH UH CAN'T PARRY THIS exceptions don't count

I respect games that have parry and no i-frames dodge and enemies that can have unparryable attacks. That is variety. Rolling with i-frames through big hits is a slop.

there is effort put into rigging hitbox/hurtbox and the animations vs. having a button show up on the hud. But neither of you dimwits know the nuances

you're like a non burger letting burgers live in xir head rent free lmao

quick time events

Woah this is cool

parrying

Woah this is cool

Parries are fine except for when it's a fighting game.

parryslop >>>>>> rollslop

So now that we've established that the parry is extremely overpowered, and, with very few exceptions, allows players to simply bypass the gameplay by mastering what I like to call the "low-level skill" of pressing a button at the prescribed time, what's the next step? What are developers doing to address the fundamental design flaw

Well, one way I've seen in some games is a sort of "kitchen sink" approach where the devs, instead of trying to rein in the parry or nerf it or remove it outright, they acknowledge that the parry is OP and go "I guess we'll just make EVERYTHING OP!"

The problem with this approach is that rather than bringing the movement and spacing fundamentals, the most important part of any video game, up to the same level as the parry, what ends up happening is that it actually makes it even MORE obvious just how useless those other options are compared to the almighty parry.

What? Just make things that aren't parriable. Stop having an episode.

while this being true, we don't really have many rollslops and rollslop can't be shoehorned in any game easily

feint, chamber and morph systems

imgpng.ru.png - 800x695, 257.59K

all the games nowadays have to be dark souls, soon counter strike will even have a parry

Hear me out: a style change/transformation system that imparts i-frames to serve as a pseudo "dodge roll" and grants a temporary offensive bonus, but is tied to a meter that can't be spammed infinitely, requiring that the player immediately go on the offense using their new form in order to replenish their stock of points to continue utilizing the transformation feature.

Yea, I agree IP.

Both are cringe. If you're gonna put them in your game make them hard to use by limiting their active frames to deter abuse.

muh parryslop is le slop but MUH STRAFESLOP GOOD

80 IQ opinions

See I feel line people hate parry and roll stuff cause the main issue is there’s no cost to doing it other than a brief cooldown window. A meter just might work. I like games that make you work for perks. As a band-aid you can use a defensive option if you really need to, it then your meter resets and you’ll have to okay better to convert that meter into a perk. The better you play, the more perks you get. The worse you play, well, enjoy your rolls or parries to survive. Everybody wins.

No, there are some attacks which are easier to avoid if you simply run away from them rather than tyring to iframe through them. However every attack in that game can feasibly be iframed through if you time it right, even stuff like Placidusax's giant aoe giga nuke.

i would love a medieval combat game where your armor takes damage and deforms until it eventually affects your mobility and breaks
youtube.com/watch?v=qhknaG9ifbs

I think we need to start with a medieval game that at least half-accurately models weapon physics and momentum, before we start working on armor damage systems.
Somehow we still haven't solved the problems of "if you swing your mouse right you can move your shortsword at 2mph and when it softly touches the enemy it will still deal full damage" as well as "if you swing your mouse the other way you can swing your giant greatsword faster than a shortsword and be a fucking ninja".

FromSoftware and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

parry to fill bar

bad: low risk/reward, repetitive and unimmersive

parry to create opening

good: high risk/reward, you do it when you spot an opportunity

I love quick time events and never understood the hate. Meanwhile I dislike parrying somewhat.
