I don't get the hype. I was told that it wasn't the same as the others but it ended up being more of the same and much worse. Why is this series always littered with more flaws than good? I tried to like it mind you.
I don't get the hype...
My hype was entirely "sure would be cool if From made another King's Field hey what's this some kind of third person King's Field" and I was a fan ever since.
I thought it was going to be a good challenging adventure rpg game with medieval aesthetics but it turned out to be a nothing burger with worse combat and meme lore that you have to dig through fan headcanons to get. It's poor design all around.
I just wanted more King's Field. Anything even remotely similar. And when this came out I was starving.
so which boss did you get stuck at?
Good for you but it still baffles me that literal shovelware, asset flip, and barely functional games that looked like they got shat out 2 gens ago get a pass and millions of buyers if it has a Fromsoft label to them. I guess years of eceleb shilling that I wasn't aware of did the trick to put these games in the undeserved spotlight.
I'm trying to remember if it did well on release or that all came later retroactively by From exploding in popularity. Regardless you're not wrong about asset flip, From has continued to exist I think due to how much they probably don't waste their assets. Compared to say a company like Capcom who as far as I can tell just loves to throw everything into a burning trash pile instead of attempting some sort of repurposing.
I had a similar feeling, but unironically liked it more than DS3. I hear others saying the original was better than the remaster (I played on PS3) so that may also affect your experience.
World wasn't too deep, but it felt like a very pure souls experience with the fluff and pretense.
1. best atmosphere in the series
2. is consistent from start to finish unlike DS1
3. has actual level design unlike DS2
4. difficulty comes from traversing levels and learning their quirks NOT from spawning in front of a boss door and memorizing retarded enemy strings and patterns
5. gets in and out and doesn't waste your time
I get it. I understand zoomies perspective.
You just had to be there. It's that simple
You HAD to be there, zoomer trannygger.
and meme lore that you have to dig through fan headcanons to get
Want to give an example, instead of just making empty statements? DeS easily is the most straightforward with it's story and lore.
if got reviewed pretty well but did not sell well at all
tfw your older brother was into games and bought demon's souls day 1
tfw you've been playing souls games since age 12
tfw you literally grew up with the series since its inception
I take unironic pride in this
did you play it first?
it's definately interesting, but after dark souls went to become a giga succesful and influential cultural phenomenon it really does feel like the prototype for it
still i think it had a charming and interesting atmosphere that was different from later souls stuff
it also felt more focused on long treks over getting to big bombastic bossfights wich i really enjoy
the only thing I didn't like as much is that the estus system has my preference over farmable grass
and it felt like it was over before it had its second or final act, but again, that was mostly because I played das and its sequels first
I played des when it got good emulator support back to back with das2 sotfs and later elden ring
I prefered them both over er, especially des seems a lot more focused
forced soul
It severely lacks content and doesn't make sense. Vague lore is ok but Fromsoft doesn't know how to carry it well and are lazy with it despite working under a tighter leash. Alot of subjects just get lost to the wind and the main purpose of it all just doesn't add up.
When the jewish cabbal finally got his vitiligo'd ass...
Incorrect. I'm 23 and like DeS just fine. You didn't have to be there, but you did have to play the games. Kids have options (like emulators, nintendo's virtual console stuff, etc). to play the classics. These people just aren't actual video game fans, its just part of the potpourri of media they consume like movies and music. I think that's fine, but you can't just walk into a room and shout 'this beloved classic sucks ass' and not expect some pushback.
You just wanted to post that .webm, I get it
The Storm King isn't gonna suck itself
Its definitely probably the hardest to get into due to its primitive design choices. But if you beat it youll feel like you really did something.
It lacks coherent story, memorable npcs, and good moments that I got spoiled by playing other fantasy rpgs. Idk if it's just a game for those gameplay only fags but it has nothing going for it if you don't like clunky combat and piss easy bosses.
You're a zoomer, and you have brainrot. It's over for you.
It is a shame you can't enjoy the literal and unironic greatest game of all time.
epic philosophical ethereal kino
It happened in mexico before except he tried ending human sacrifice and was Banished.
Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl (Our Prince One-Reed Precious Serpent) (13 May 895–947) born in in what is now the town of Tepoztlán in the state of Morelos.
This is the guy the Aztecs supposedly confused with cortez. But this is unlikely since vitiligo is very common in mexico.
no examples
so I take it as a "no, I was just talking out my ass"?
DeS is very straightforward with its lore
the vagueness didn't start until DaS
Yeah, there was environmental storytelling and characters aren't giving you giant monologues filling in every single detail you could possibly think of, but its very clear, upfront, and straightforward with the lore and what is happening, it straight up just tells you most things.
Sony tried to ape Oblivion's success but they gave the money to the wrong studio and ended up kicking them out for selling like shit. Fromsoft can't ever match Bethesda's success at crafting good worlds, good lore, sense of adventure, nor fun npcs. They're stuck making the same world for decades.
Again. Want to be specific, instead of making empty statements?
vague
The game spells out the plot of the game for you in plain English in the opening cutscene and required dialogue in the first couple of hours.
God exists
God created mankind and gave them souls
God created the Old One to punish mankind for abusing their souls
Boletaria weaponized souls
The Old One wakes up and starts doing it's job
You are trying to put the Old One back to sleep
None of this is hidden and is given to you.
Maybe try paying attention when the game is overtly telling you things?
Soulslop wishes it was as HALF as good as Kingsfield
Tollan was also the name for the ancient city of Tula, which was the capital of the Toltec Empire in central Mexico.
You can visit his palace.
It doesn't hold up. It was surpassed by Dark Souls 1 in every way. There's no reason to go back.
The World and Level design doesn't hold up to DS1 at all.
The non-linear start was done better by DS2.
Gameplay improved with BB onward.
It's not like other old games like OOT or Morrowind. DeS was completely surpassed by DS1 which makes it irrelaveant. OOT and Morrowind where never truly surpassed so people reguarly go back to them. It's that simple.
Noooo! DS1 isn't better tham DeS!
Ok retard, you simply have shit taste then.
why even make a post when everything you say is so obviously incorrect
A few days after Elden ring released I was at a brothel and the girl I saw there asked me if I had any other plans for the night (since it was like 8pm or smt) and I said I was going to go back to playing elden ring.
She told me she grew up watching her Dad play those games and would try to play them but sucked at them, that she played Demon's souls at like 8 years old with her father
was thinking that surely this cannot be correct, demon's souls released when I was like 18-19, but she was only 21 now and it added up, kind of really fucked me up to hear it.
Dark Souls is the worst of the trilogy and a huge downgrade
Entire second half of game is borderline incomplete and is empty and sterile with terrible level design
Level design in general is just a lot less consistent in terms of quality than Demon's Souls
some of the worst environments of all the Souls games like Anor Londo, Catacombs, Ash Lake, Great Hollow, Crystal Caves, Valley of Drakes, and Lost Izalith
godawful enemies like the bonewheel skeletons, Stray Demons, Anor Londo Archers, and Drakes
many bosses are underwhelming or poorly designed, like O&S, Priscilla, Capra, Quelaag, Pinwheel, Seath, Taurus, Ceaseless Discharge, bed of chaos
bosses are already starting to focus primarily on action and rolling with less focus on original and puzzle bosses
literally recycles the same boss three times
Hitboxes and i-frames are more inconsistent
Retarded mechanics like curse and common consumables only sold by a select few merchants (I played 1.00)
can't fast travel anywhere until over halfway into the game, constantly backtracking and running from one end of the world to the other just to buy an item from a shop, go to a covenant, or upgrade your equipment
many of the key mechanics are poorly explained (lordvessel, upgrading estus, kindling bonfires, pardoning, etc)
game world is a convoluted mess with necessary NPCs scattered into the far corners of the world (the interconnected world starts to become more and more contrived as the game goes on), again requiring a ton of constant backtracking
dogshit platforming sections
only basically one main path you can take that you find through trial and error and backtracking. Less flexibility in boss order
Demon's had focus on invasions, mindgames, and power dynamics, with risk reward for human form and punishing players for soul form. Dark Souls is about "le honorable duel" and there is really no downside to hollow and you just summon at the boss door. Really devalues the whole experience
Where was the wrong? Demon's Souls and its kind are overrated shit games that got too popular for their own good.
I disagree, ocarina of time and Mario 64 were my first games but I think wind waker and Twilight princess are definitely better games.
I've seen zoomies make Zelda tier lists and they always put ocarina and Majora's mask in C or D tier.
Anor Londo is a terrible enviornment
All of your otherwise good points are invalid, that place looks beautiful and besides the archers I wouldn't say there are any glaring level design issues either.
I don't get it either. These games are filled with ugly levels with grey or brown color palettes, boring dead worlds, and some of the worst jank you'll experience in a game.
shut the fuck up you goddamn retarded zoomer
you lost
fromsoft will never make a game with the Demon's Souls formula again
demons souls sold like shit even by ps3 standards, anyone trying to say otherwise it just being a biased retard. IIRC sony was skeptical of it the entire time, to this day I have no idea why bc the ps3 needed games like it and they kinda actively sabotaged it
dark souls is what transformed their company
demons souls sold like shit
no it didn't
demons souls had such cool vibes
zoomers will NEVER understand what we felt playing it because they see the souls through the "dark souls so hard" lens and not the "literally what the fuck is this game holy shit it's so mysterious and unique" lens we had back then
another great example, the golden cartridge OOT came out still fills me with some nostalgia, shit was so cool back then and the game was incredible coming from the shit that came before it.
what did they sabotage?
i thought it all started as a cancelled jrpg project and they were tasked with just creating any game reusing some of it's assets and they didn't care what it was
it sold barely 200k copies in it's first year, it didn't break a million until dark souls release and people went back to play it
again, biased retard
maybe sabotage was the wrong word
they wanted to just rush slop out and then didn't market it at all. Then fromsoft accidentally made a pretty good game
Dark Souls 1s second half ruins the entire experience with how thrown together it is, Demons Souls if nothing else is at least consistent
gotcha
honestly, as good a testament to just let a few devs do whatever they want to
i'm glad sony didn't squat the ip like BB
200k in Japan. It was big overseas even before Dark Souls
i have that opinion as well and i've seen many people try to completely dismiss it as invalid. DS1 just has it's devoted cultists
lost izalith is one of the worst levels in a video game I've ever played, other post lord vessel areas aren't much better
game still holds a special place for me but yeah
alright
i'm gonna play darksouls 1 again as i never did the expansions of it
did most kinds of weapons except for these
knives only?
or big bonk super heavy weapon
it didn't hit 200k in NA until a full year later you're full of shit lmfao
why are people like this
Do you want easy mode? You go bonk mode. Do you want a sometimes annoying challenge? Use whatever you want.
I like the idea that zoomers will think demons souls fans are all ancient boomers because of this picture, even though we made fun of it back then too
Want to give an example
Okay
who built the nexus
where did the maiden come from
Some pretty basic stuff, but I finished the game twice and have no recollection of there ever being any explanation or even hints
I was there and the only hype it got was from one thread. I thought it was another FOTM that was bound to fail and turned out to be right like always.
fotm that was bound to fail, I was right heh......
the game that spawned countless sequels by fromsoft with an ever increasing amount of popularity, sales, hype and glowing reviews from players and even game journ*s
Are you that guy who thought the Switch was going to flop?
had a general thread for years
