First it was immediately obvious the girl was in a purgatory dream coma and she's actually in a hospital. You were gradually given information on HOW she ended up there. It wasn't a twist that the whole thing wasn't "real".
Second, the whole story is about helping her get over the traumatic incident, letting her get to play piano with her brother one last time and have a proper goodbye. So the "dream world" had actual stakes and character development carried over to the "real world".
The problem with lots of "it was all a dream" endings isn't inherently that the experience was fake, it's that it didn't feel like it mattered.
The point of good writing is scoring a win over the reader/viewer/player, not telling a story.
You walk up to someone, hide a candy in one of your hands and ask him to pick a hand. When he does, you kick him in the balls. His expectations are completely subverted and therefore you won because you have complete control of the narrative. A hack might've hit him with the same hand he picked because "it's more funny that way", but it's too predictable and cliched.

the strength of a "dream" plot, which is where shit writing always stands out, is that it's a character study/introspection hidden in a "normal" story. what's going on in the "dream" needs to be an extension of the dreamer's mind, even if it's not immediately obvious until the end. a normal story that just goes "and then they all woke up" is indeed shit.

The hard thing with deltarune is if it ends up being a dream, then whose dream is it and why does it matter? For futurama it explores how much Lela actually loves fry deep down, which works because we’ve seen those characters before.

defeating the cat in chapter 3 completely fucks up the plot for the rest of the chapters, like if you killed flowey in waterfall, and requires SIGNIFICANT script-breaking via the shadow mantle. it will be impossible to stumble into it by accident, you will only be able to do it deliberately.

It seems that the method Toby uses is the same one Itoi uses. Make your characters goofy and quirky to make them endearing to you and then have that one moment of heartbreak or melancholy that grounds them and makes you feel.

The same thing happened in the bunker. Noelle learned snowgrave and accidently used it on dess. Dess was left behind in the bunker while kris and noelle escaped. Noelle blanked out and forgot everything (a worse version of the berdly blankout since shes a kid) kris still remembers and thus got depressed or distant.

When they entered the dark world the books turned into items which they then carried on them until the left the dark world where the turned back into books and landed right in front of them on the table.

the smog of a fountain being opened is completely visual, yet would mask the knight if he just ran out of the room so he doesn't get warped as well
The problem with how the Knight did it isn't how he did it without Berdly/Noelle seeing him, it's who it can be since running past Undyne (or hiding somewhere in the libraries upper floors) takes out a handful of characters from being the Knight

as for the chapter 2 fountain, it's possible if you believe kris tore out their soul, plugged in the tv in the living room, went to the library, busted into the computer lab, turned on the public laptop to record themselves making the fountain, made a fountain using a significant amount of determination while soulless, went back to their house, ate an entire pie, left the knife in the tin and finally put the entire essence of their being back inside their body then went back to sleep
1. closet and lab absorbing light outside it, computer lab taking stuff from the server room in the back because the door is open
2. ralsei does not say lancer opened the door, but rather that he was able to come through because of the door opening. intro shows unused classroom fountain being a recent fountain made after the closet one. great door opens into a different dark world instead of an extension of castle town

Deltarune is a doomed timeline Gaster summoned the player to save.
The moment the timeline diverges is the Goner Maker sequence.
Shadow Crystals show you the original timeline without that divergence. Knight-made Dark Worlds show you the real room, but Castle Town doesn't; this is because the Knight was not present in the original timeline but Castle Town was.
The reason the Knight's Dark Worlds are only present in the Goner Maker timeline is because the Vessel made them. The Vessel controlled by someone else (likely the narrator who claimed to discard it) is the Knight.
An antagonist controlling our supposedly discarded Vessel has foreshadowing already in Rouxls using our supposedly destroyed Thrash Machine.
Ralsei was taught the prophecy by Gaster (see old deltarune.com having the prophecy in Wingdings) shortly before you arrived, and his entire "Ralsei" persona was another instruction for him to follow (see "I don't know what it means to be Ralsei-like" or whatever that line was).
He's just following a script Gaster gave him to prevent the original bad end, everything about him waiting forever for you is bullshit.
Ralsei's form is also another instruction from Gaster and he's a shapeshifter. He hid his face under the riverperson cloak because he wasn't finished shapeshifting yet.
Also Sans and Papyrus in Undertale are from the original Deltarune timeline Gaster is fucking with. Papyrus's "battle body" is his Dark World outfit because he was transferred over during the Roaring and Sans's didn't change. Realistically speaking, there will be a moment when Ralsei comes at odds with Shit Gang, but I believe that in the end he will stick with Kris and Susie no matter what. Or maybe, when he was saying "In the end, how we treat people makes all the difference", he meant himself as well. Better hug the gote just in case. Anyway, it's a story about three lonely people finding each other, and I don't think they will be broken up completely.

You're probably the most sane out of all of us, plus you aren't wasting your time. Anything pertinent to the story and themes of Deltarune will definitely be explained in the game itself, at worst you might miss Toby hinting at a third game in the code or whatever bullshit, like Gaster with Undertale. And even then, if that were to be the case, you'd learn everything you'd need to know in that third game. Just relax and enjoy Deltarune.

Ralsei is Kaworu, who thinks his purpose is just to make Shinji (Kris) happy no matter how many timelines it takes. as the 7 days keep looping and looping, changing ever so slightly, eventually (you) come in and force Kris to stop being a depressed loser, grow up and help his friends get their happy ending with meta powers
