I believe it was either the franchises foray into MMOs' or XII. I loved the lore of Ivalice when I was a kid playing Tactics and Tactics Advance. Then when I played 12, I couldn't get behind the main character or half of the characters. I did want to fuck Fran like very other coomer back then, but that was besides the point. I beat the game feeling pretty hollow about it. I've sort of felt that way about every game in the franchise after X (X-2, XII, XIII, XIII-2, XIII-3, XV). I'm currently playing through XVI and that same hollow feeling continues on. Either I grew too old, or Square-Enix isn't capable of crafting good stories anymore. It's probably a combination of both, but I'm leaning towards the later solely based on the VII "remakes". What little fun I had with Remake died with Rebirth. I can't bring myself to get past Costa Del Sol because I just know there's more mini-games waiting for me.

If the original FFVII had this many mini-games, I doubt Cloud and the party could ever save the planet because of the number of mini-games that bogged down their quest.

Strip the spiritual and self-sacrificial themes and you get FFX-2, the Weimar Germany of FF games. Yu Yevon did nothing wrong.

The "team" that made 8 made 10, sakaguchi stopped being involved after 9 and 10 wasn't heavily influenced by Nomura either. The real difference is that Hiroyuki Ito never got to work in mainline again after he couldn't fully salvage FFXII. That's why the series never returned to ATB without some kind of gimmick and why all of the convoluted systems stopped existing

It has literally the best combat out of any of the final fantasy games. The graphics are so good they still hold up today. The music is classic. The cutscenes were probably the best ever put into a game for their time. The world building was overall impressive.
However, I am not really a fan of the main cast. Tidus isn't as bad as people make him out to be but he is still kinda bland and his design sucks. The world opens up too late into the game. Blitzball is balls. The post-game content just involves black versions of summons. Game is imbalanced.

The interesting thing about Wakka's presentation is that he's shown to be a good guy first and a racist second. So by the time his racism appears, the immediate response isn't to hate him, it's to try and understand him and maybe help him. Wakka has reasons for being the way he is and his entire arc is understanding how it's possible for a good guy to hate a group of people he's never even had a conversation with. And it poses a genuinely interesting question: if a good man was raised with a bias from birth, does that stop him from being a good man?

You can't really do that now because the NPCs that use Twitter and Reddit will accuse SE of endorsing racism even in the mild form it takes in FFX. A remade Wakka would either not be racist at all or would be a buttmonkey that exists to be dunked on so you clap when it happens.

But they don't have to because any gap in strength from abusing Rikku's mixes are made up for by characters just progressing naturally. Without grid and without aeons are not even close to being in the same ballpark. Aeons are entirely optional, they're just playing the game on easy mode for the most part.

You absolutely can. Seymour is vulnerable to poison and so is his parasite. That's damage inflicted every turn without you doing anything. Yuna can use her Aeons as meat shields that also do massive damage early in. Even if Tidus doesn't have Hastega by that point, between him and Rikku using Cocobo Feathers, which you can absolutely get at least a few of before that point, you can still speed up your party enough to reasonably box with Seymour even if you didn't know he was coming. Struggling with durability and getting one shot? Pop a Stamina Tablet and guard. They double your HP and are found on the Moonflow on Rikku's introductory chapter where you are incentivized to experiment with the steal command on treasure chests. Struggling with Reflect? But once you understand that zombie makes you immune to Death, you can absolutely play around it without grinding. I never liked Final Fantasy 10. Anyone else? To summarize...

Gameplay - The sphere grid is annoying. Basically in theory every character can do every single skill and magic attack EXCEPT for their unique Overdrives. But the only Overdrives that matter are examples like Wakka who hit enemies MULTIPLE times. And before anyone says is Rikku's Overdrive is shit, you NEED a guide to even remember which item combination among hundreds gives you a good benefit. And the best item combinations use rare items that are difficult to get. This is shit. Holy fuck this gameplay system is awful and maximizing stats is tedious EVEN if you know how to get the abilities that make you level up quickly because what good is leveling up when you do NOT have the Stat Abilities that give you the increase of your stats? Enough said this is a bad gameplay system.

Story - Not going to talk about every single character but I hated Tidus because he was a Mama's Boy who refused to see that his shitty mother was a deadbeat who INTENTIONALLY preferred suicide over raising him when he was a young toddler. And Tidus is in denial over his mother being shit so he doubles down on hating his father. His father is not the most likable guy since he was an actual alcoholic but Jecht actually matured and changed for the better and even when he was a mean spirited drunk he never really punched Tidus when he was young and ultimately only insulted Tidus to provoke him into being more masculine and capable.

So the main protagonist being an annoying beta bitch Mama's Boy ruined the story of Final Fantasy 10. When the plot twist came that Tidus is not Real I was like "I don't care whether Tidus is real or not, he is shit regardless." Awful game. Simply fucking terrible.

* Losing Sakaguchi
* Promoting Kitase as de facto FF head
* Bunch of directors with Chuunibyo and no discipline for a consistent creative vision
* "Final Fantasy can be anything the director wants it to be"
* FFX had peak combat, then the series moved away from it because of reasons
* Dumbed down one button combat. Even when they go Action combat, they constantly dumbed down and kiddify their combat's difficulty cause they are afraid to piss off the turn based base. Which ends up just pissing off everyone.
* No respect for the importance of resource management, which makes stuff like dungeons a joke
* Constant trend chasing instead of setting the trend
* Different team working on each new FF game, which makes it hard for the devs to iterate on past works.
* Square Enix in general got more and more lazy and safe with their art direction ever since FFXIII. Their games increasingly look pretty but boring.
* FF used to be the gold standard for writing and narration in a console game. Nowadays not only have other studios caught up, Square Enix has regressed in their writing. In particularly you would not have realized FFXIII and FFXV have good writing considering the narrative decisions which troll and insult the players (same can be said about FFVII remakes).
* Losing Uematsu was a blow cause there are still great composers in Square Enix, but no one can produce bangers as consistently as he can.

The boss fight itself is better because how could it not be, but instead of taking a dive off of the cliff at the end a bunch of Shinra goons come by to clean up Avalanche and Dyne solos them all while getting shot up. That's kind of a frequent problem with the 7 remake, big NPCs keep getting "bigger" moments and it usually doesn't improve the character.

The franchise was doomed when the company died.

They did. And you know what pisses me off in particular? Final Fantasy 7 is a T rated story so an adult man choosing to intentionally fall to his death should be acceptable. However it is not.

Now then look at another Square Enix game Kingdom Hearts 3. Xigbar after you beat his boss fight is permitted to climb on top of a tower and throws himself off a cliff to his death. I repeat the DISNEY game allowed an antagonist to do what Dyne already did back in the original game. Oh sure it was revealed later that Xigbar's suicide is fake but it doesn't change the visual display that a Disney game allowed itself to show this.

Maybe Nomura was telling the truth about he personally wanting a loyal Final Fantasy 7 Remake because if Nomura included this Xigbar scene that is literally Dyne's suicide then its safe to say Nomura would have kept Dyne's suicide intact during the remake.

I know FFX is well-liked by a lot of people for the slow rock-paper-scissors combat, and the focus on male sexuality and writhing male bodies submerged in water, but personally my favourite part of the game was that romantic scene where Tidus and Wakka confessed their love and blowbanged on the pale sands of Besaid Island.

As OP states in this thread, the issue with final fantasy's quality in the modern era is not that 13 is bad, its that 10 is considered good. ff9 was an overly padded drag of a game where half the roster were afterthoughts and only four bosses are worth remembering the names of, but for all of its failures there was at the very least an effort that failed to succeed. FFX is just a boring empty game filled with worthless fluff, but because the graphics are pretty people still defend it to this very day.
