I hate the retro aesthetic when they force diversity into it. It just feels off, especially when they are trying to replicate a game from another era, where the people of different areas are all racially homogenous. Representation for representation sake takes me out of the experience. Also, modern day speech/lingo ruins stuff.

The death of AA/mid budget games has been a disaster for video games. There is nothing to fill the void, you either have AAA garbage or low effort indie slop. Even ambitious indie studios that use powerful game engines and actually try end up making subpar games because of poor priorities and misguided design decisions. I think one of the major problem with indies, even the ones that are "competent" and passionate is that they apply what I would call "discord game design", instead of just designing their games based on personal sensibilitites and what they think will work and be fun, they try too hard to engage and listen to "muh community" so you end up with games that pander and appeal (and often fail) to a specific group of faggots instead of a good game that can pull people in.

What amount of gayness are you willing to put up with to experience a fun RPG? Give me examples so my recommendations can be more effective.

RPG, I can think of Gedonia, a jank action RPG, if you get past the asset look.
There's also Felvidek, a RPGMaker game where you play a drunk knight in 15th century Slovakia.
Strategy, I can think of Symphony of War, a sort of mix between Fire Emblem and Advanced Wars, story is dogshit imo, but the ability to turn generic units into their own party makes the game really flexible.
Grand strategy and 4x isn't my sort of stuff so some other anon will have to help you there.

I don't disagree with there being a fucking flood. Everyone wants to jump on that bandwagon.
It's just in the same way I won't praise indie for being indie and not AAA, as in, "well it's less people so they have an excuse", I won't hate indie games for the fact that most people are unoriginal and only want to make a buck from easily swayed nostalgiafaggots. I just avoid categorizing them at this point. It's not either AAA or indie to me, it's just "is it good or not".
One thing indie games genuinely have over AAA is that you won't see AAA releases of smaller scale games. They won't bother with anything that isn't high production. You wouldn't see a simple game like the coffin of andy and leyley produced by a big studio.

That's mostly a side effect of short dev time.
People always jump on trends, just look at FNAF and all its clones, but with indie it's often small projects, leading to short dev times, so you often see copycats very quickly.

Maturing is realizing you need at least 2x the lean mass of zyzz to be truly happy.

Even some of those, if they're somewhat competent, get their copycats.
My gripe with all this is that it does get a little difficult to find shit worth playing sometimes. The Next Fests have way too many demos that shouldn't be there at all. They get in the fucking way. But you just bother with the presentation skipping most of them, and maybe one or three of those weren't all that bad, it's kinda fucked. It's not always "if your game is good, it'll get really popular on steam". Not every game is Nine Sols.
