Does that not seem a little overcomplicated?

If Kris really wants to get stronger by grinding Dark Worlds, they can just create Dark Fountains in places where there's no danger of any other Lightner coming for us to mindfuck. They technically don't need anybody to seal the Fountain because they alone have the power to seal the Fountains.

I haven't done refresher on Vangers in a long time. Basically, it's an open-world game from 1998, and its backstory deals with human-monster war where monsters end up locked outside the Earth in a tiny world (though I wouldn't really push this angle since it's not that similar to UT otherwise). Anyway, there's a big twist that pretty much completely follows the setup of Deltarune.

a faction got stuck outside of physical world (Gaster)

they need an agent on the inside since they can't interact with the world, only exchange information

they try to contact one of the factions in the world, but it proves useless to their goals (Darkners)

they try to contact another faction, but fail to establish a communication (Lighters)

they try to create their own agent, but it turns out nonviable (Vessel)

finally, they slave one of the world's denizens to a remote control program, disguise it as video game and send it to (You) (SURVEY_PROGRAM)

the game even has "Connecting to your Vanger" on the loading screen ("ARE WE CONNECTED?")

Now, that game had two routes. One is a good boy route where you work for said faction, achieve their goals and the entity you controlled goes to Earth. Another route has you working for another far more sinister faction and commit something akin to Genocide (complete with its own version of "But nobody came").
However, those routes are not mutually exclusive. You can do both of them and you will get a special ending in which everything goes off the rails and something called Third Will emerges in the game world.

Susie is their party member and best friend, who they know that the SOUL cannot control. The Weird Route was only possible because Kris was separated from Susie (and Ralsei). If Kris is on their own, they're at our mercy.
I have to imagine Kris would rather not have Toriel involved, but Kris and Susie are right there with her and the 8 foot tall goat woman can probably take care of herself. I don't think Toriel will have a really major part in Chapter 3, but who better to see that there's something wrong with Kris than their mother?

It's hard to say exactly what Kris's motivation is, but the motivation of some third entity is even more speculative and unknowable. The point is that there are conceivable reasons Kris might feel that taking extreme action and opening a fountain is necessary, and invoking another nebulous evil power possessing their body isn't necessary.

The SOUL seems to have more power in the Dark World than in the Light World. In the Dark World, the SOUL can move around freely (even apparently through walls) without losing control over Kris. It has magical abilities, to "shine its power" on others to empower them and transform to fight Spamton NEO. It can command the party when Kris is down, and it can command Noelle from a great distance to intervene against Spamton NEO. It can read the party's minds and respond to their thoughts by speaking its voice through Kris's mouth.
None of this seems possible in the Light World, where we are entirely limited to Kris's body and perspective, Kris can summon the will to defy us and we are helpless to escape a cabinet.
That still leaves the question of why Kris is still tolerating us and not telling anyone about their situation, but we can't expect to understand everything at this point in the story.
