Writing is one of the most important things in a game.
The only proof I need is Fallout 3 and New Vegas.
New Vegas is one of the most famous and beloved games of all time while Fallout 3's reputation is at best "Bad New Vegas".
The games play almost identically. They both run like shit, they're both pretty ugly, they both have the same RPG systems, very similar settings, same bad gunplay. The, by orders of magnitude, biggest and frankly only real difference between them is the writing. Writing alone is the difference between an overlooked game and a greatest of all time contender

Writing is difficult, but not extremely so if you're inclined to it. However, you need to have some understanding of human nature, conflict, et cetera, ideally with a deep understanding of classic literature, religion, history, et cetera as well (what used to be called 'liberal arts' and considered the bare minimum for any intellectual). That's something most video game writers just don't have, especially the younger ones.

Millennial writing in movies, shows and video games is shit not just because of its reliance on quips and heavily telegraphed plot twists, but because it's an artificial copy of earlier fiction rather than a reflection of reality with insights of its own. It's writing done by people who have never been out in the real world and never had any profound, prolonged thoughts about human interaction, but instead grew up watching blockbuster movies and cartoons and got their entire frame of reference from those things. They cannot think outside of their frame of reference, and their frame of reference consists only of bite-sized slop from the 80s, 90s and 00s. I guess you could compare it to a .jpg, which becomes more artifacted and less recognizable every time it's copied.

People talk about AI as if it's such a huge threat to good writers, but AI simply does what millennial writers do: it churns out a composite of what came before with nothing particularly new or thought-provoking about it.
