Honestly I think people trash the gameplay so hard because there's literally nothing else to complain about and they don't want to give Obsidian a 10/10. I'm not going to lie and say the gameplay is good. It's not. But it's not unplayable by any means, and is actually far less jank than many of Anon Babble's long time darlings.
I think we just got used to the idea that there's no reason to expect a response?

It's broken and was never fixed, like most of Obsidian games
It's pretty poorly balanced, the stealth and tech classes are basically your run and gun classes and the soldier can't hack, sneak, or even fight as well as them.
I guess the other major complaint (for what it is) is the clearly cut content//story beats and the overall short nature of the game. It's good for what's there but its very easy to speed through the game.
It's not a real criticism, because games shouldn't be arbitrarily long, but this is a game where it would be nice to have more of it.
Thing is, gameplay is a huge issue. Everyone says pistols are OP, which is true, but the stealth mechanics are kinda garbage, so if you go out of your way to avoid the OP stuff, you're left having to deal with the mediocre gameplay.
In other games you can not ruin the gameplay for yourself by avoiding the OP choices, in this one, it's more of a catch 22.
Even so, I did love the game and would recommend it to anyone that asks.

One of the few games that actually delivers on the "your choices matter" premise, which I guess its also a double edged sword because you can tell a lot of the musclework went into the story and dialogue options and not the gameplay which was being made by a developer with little to no experience in third person shooters. If you can get past the broken gameplay you still get a solid spy rpg experience, the real tragedy is this never getting a sequel with more refined features.
This game will never get the remake it needs to fix its gameplay without everything else being irrevocably fucked.

I appreciate how much of a huge asshole you can be in this game. In dialogue, actions in game and via emails, and the game accounts for it with the branching paths allowing Mike to navigate through till the end. Voice acting is great.
After the VA for Woodhouse and Mallory died, the series fell off so bad.... what a shame, probably one of the best animated shows ever

Bunch of neat ideas that can't carry boring stages/gameplay. The game is missing something to hold it together. Doesn't help that Michael Thornton is the least charismatic character in a game ever with the funniest bad voice acting. Dude didn't give a shit the whole way through.
I just did a melee only run which ended in the final level because they decided your rival "bro" fight should have him hide in a tower with only like one way to damage him. The run was funny though because I just didn't care about getting caught. I walked through every stage karate chopping people.

I only played it once, a long old time ago, more than 10 years I think, so I didn't know the story had genuine branches. Neat, I hope I get a different experience this time

there's one of those infinite ammo sniper rifles in the guard tower opposite from Darcy. but yeah it's the worst boss battle in the game and the bosses in general are a weak point.
Fun for the most part but suffers badly from Obsidian Syndrome, i.e. "We forgot to write an an ending".
joining Halbech is the most satisfying ending, all those conversations with Leland are some of the best in the game and have the most opportunities to affect your reputation with another character. the "professional" choice has Mike beat him senseless, or you shoot him, both feel like a waste.
