Yeah, the main problem with the game is it's way too easy. No items makes things decently more challenging but even then you eventually build up a strong demon pool to lean on and it's still really hard to die in most fights.

That's the worst part. You don't even have to consider when it's best to use them. Just use them when the boss prepares for a Magatsuhi attack.
Dampeners are just a symptom of the problem of the game's boss design. None of them have engaging moves of their own as they are usually restricted to Magatsuhi skills, but then they waste an entire turn just announcing which skill they are going to use that if you can simply read the skills they haven't used yet then you can guess the element and entirely nullify the damage.
Rinse and repeat this for all the non super boss bosses and you have SMTV and VV

Yeah, the main game is piss easy. The most annoying thing is that the game constantly throws at you whatever item/essence/demon you'll need to counter the next boss and make it a joke. And it does this with 0 subtlety.

yeah it's a shame, I think SMTV:V is probably the best version of press turn I've played (haven't played metaphor yet because I just know atlus will make a 2nd edition of the game so I'm waiting for that) but the game itself doesn't really have good content to go with the good gameplay systems. Bosses telegraph their moves too much generally so dampeners make for easy nullifications and are cheap, and the game using symbol encounters and generally having much safer areas to traverse means you can always challenge a boss at full HP/SP, if they don't just give you a healing fountain right before it.

Literally 80% of the bosses have piercing attacks by the 3rd act in vengeance. Magutsuhi attacks are huge sirens to drop resistance, but late game demons still can get around those and grief you like Zeus and Samael.

Problem with the game is that it isn't hard enough to push you to try other Omagatoki skills, crit really is just good enough for the entire runtime despite it being quite bland. Succession is way more fun to use

Instead of dampeners you can just use tetrakarn or makarakarn, enemy magatsuhi turn nearly always uses an aoe attack and it'll end their turn anyway. Surely you've got your buffs and debuffs maxed to tank a crit right?

Idk I got pretty lost while playing SMT VV but I was also stoned to shit. Navigationwise I actually liked Devil childrens overworld and dungeons for the GBA felt like one of the best implimented dungeon crawling of the whole franchise
