Do you miss Midnight Releases? Favorite midnight release? Any stories? Characters?

why not go to sleep and play it when you wake up? i don't get it.

Because its fun

was best buy always shitty?

every gamer group got the tranny, the fat retard, and the stinky lanklet

When I was at UofT I remember walking from campus down to the Future Shop at Dundas square to line up for the midnight release of WoTLK. It wasn't an insane crowd but a lot of people showed up and was cool to shoot the shit with everyone before we got in the store. The walk back felt like it took forever, installed it immediately on my shitty macbook and played until midnight the following day. Was the server first death knight and tanked for my guild doing both server first naxx and malygos. I miss those days sometimes, didn't have to worry about work or kids or anything

I went to one for GTA IV. Never again.

The last 2 mightnight releases I went to.

March 17, 2015
I went for Final Fantasy Type 0 for access to Final Fantasy 15 demo, same with the rest of the store, besides my one fag friend who went for Battlefield hardline. Argument in the store because he thought Final Fantasy was gay and we all thought carl of duty was gay.
Turns out we're all gay cause Final fantasy 15 and Hardline both sucked.

The other launch was Pokemon Black and White 2. My dad drove me there, I was 19 everyone else was like 10 and also with their parents. I moved out shortly afterwards.

i'll never understand the appeal of harry potter. shit is so fucking lame. this is legendary though.

I went for every Smash Bros release since Brawl.

I went to the midnight release of No Man's Sky because my friend really wanted to buy it. There was no one else in line. We got back and lo and behold it was a huge piece of shit. He got stuck under the ground and it took so long to kill himself it auto saved under the ground again. Really fun night just getting trashed and shitting on the game.

Yeah. Compusa and electronics boutique were great until they went out of business.

I've lived in a small, rural town my entire life and our Walmart was the only place to buy games at. They never did a midnight release to my knowledge.

I do remember seeing them on TV and videos of guys with some little generator hooked up to a TV and a console and thought how fun that looked

why not?

half the niggers in the queue ended up shooting each others

smells like shit
you're tired af

by the time you get the game home you're asleep under half an hour - might as well get it in the morning with some breakfast

What young person doesn't go to bed at 6am?

Even as a grandpa(not literally) I still go to bed at 2am every day and start work at 8am

say that after standing in a queue all night

I used to work at a warehouse standing 12 hours straight. It's true that the young generation are a bunch of pussies

nobody cares

lol what a loser

I did it for Fallout 3 on the 360. I enjoyed it but never realized how shit it ran compared to PC.

okay gramps time for bed

i dont work so i stay up late so midnight releases were comfy

The last one I went to was Halo reach, that was really cool they had Halo 3 lan boxes set up outside all night.

never had them here cuz everything closes before 5pm.

Where on earth do you live where everything closes at 5?

I never did one. Didnt care. Why would I go sit in a long line at midnight? Im not playing it when I get home because I had school work. They almost never happened on a Friday or Saturday. Even if they did my sleep schedule meant Im just going to sleep when I get home.

Even by the PS2/Xbox era you could get Amazon or some site to deliver it to you the next day. Or just drive to Gamestop, Walmart, wherever. I never felt the need to play the game day one, even the games I most looked forward to.

Besides, most of the midnight release games were normalfag shit like GTA or Call of Duty. Even when it was a slightly less normie game, it was normalfags and faggy casuals that would go.

It was always dumb

Our gamestop was near B dubz and applebees, so we would get lit at one of those places prior and then wait in line while eating leftovers

I dont like midnight releases, by the time you install it and play its too late to actually play.

Last one I went to was Fallout New Vegas, it was cool cheesing the slot machines for unlimited money before they patched it out.

in a town.
mon-fri 9-5 (sometimes 9-4) is the standard business hours anywhere that isnt a fucking massive city.

Listen here nigger I'll have you know I'm not stinky at all

Last time I ever bothered was Assassins Creed 3. It was so bad it not only got me to stop waiting all night for a game, it got me to stop pre ordering games.

I went to the midnight release of the new3DS because I didn't know how popular it'd be and I was first in line and one of like 15 people who showed up. Just shot the shit a little and got the white one.

Compusa

Holy shit lol

I wanna go to the midnight release of switch 2 but I'm broke atm.

Everyone in line got a big back

That's one way to get no maidens

Gamestop held local tournaments for the midnight Brawl release. The one I went to even somehow ordered chipotle for everyone. It was default rules and wiimote+nunchuk controls, but I thought it was fantastic anyway. When I thanked the manager, he said I was the only person who thanked him.

I went to one Midnight release - GTAIV (XB360)

I traded the game in a week later. Shit game.

I bet it smelled like yugioh in there.

midnight releases really aren't common in australia so I've never been to one, and I don't think they've even done any in years at this point

Literally everyone is fat

Went to some CoD ones back in the day, some years take a day off of work

Twas fun

Yeah I bet you're a picture of health and fitness yourself

shit sucked. it was a a god damn rat race

let's stand in the cold for halo two

fuck that I'm going to go sleep in the car

Last two I went to was new vegas & skyrim, there's something cool about going to gamestop at midnight with a shit ton of other people.
New vegas was such a disappointment on release, my friend & it got back to my house & the game crashed five seconds after walking out of doc mitchells house & the game was a glitchy mess to the point I rage quit the game for five years. Worst midnight launch ever.

I'm old and worked at a video game store when halo 2 came out. That was a lot of fun. It was in a high end urban neighborhood and I remember the line stretched around the block. It was a fun job because it was there were only four of us who worked at the store and we were all kind of bro type party-ers so our store was always fun and everyone loved coming in because we made the store a cool and fun place to hang out. That halo 2 release night was so much fun

ALWAYS BET ON BLOAT

31 year old here. I've only been to two: GTA V and Skyrim. GTA V was pretty basic. Just went to GameStop, got the game and went home to play until the sun came up. Also requested the next day off of work so I could play that entire day too.

Skyrim was fucking awesome though. Was still in high school when that game came out. Me and two of my buddies ordered copies from GameStop in our small desert town. We went to our other friend's house who had a gaming pc who got access to the game three hours early, since we are on West Coast time and the game released at midnight EST. We went to his house and watched him create his character for like thirty minutes. We got bored watching him play but still had like 2 hours to kill before we could get our hands on our copies so we rode around town egging people's houses until it was time to go to GameStop. We all went home and played the game. I remember that game came out during Thanksgiving Break, so we all had an entire week off of school do to nothing but play Skyrim.

I really do pity the younger generation because we we are able to do all kinds of heinous shit and get away with it, since people didn't have smartphones in their pockets ready to record 4k video of anything at all times.

nov 2006 launch of the Wii. waited in line for 12 hours, it was kinda fun i guess. i brought my DS as did many others, and kids were setting up local chat and drawing dicks on the DS. i did end up meeting a cute girl and got her number so that plus the Wii was a nice time indeed.

Final Fantasy XIII was the last one I ever did. Before that it was MWII. Man I just liked it because I felt like I was around people who liked the same thing I did.

Shame it was a awful system

Jesus Christ you are a bitter man. And also apparently retarded.

Even by the PS2/Xbox era you could get Amazon or some site to deliver it to you the next day.

This shit didn't become commonplace until the xbone//ps4 era. You're off by a decade.

Any fun stories, video game store bro? I hope you guys were nice to all the young sports that came in to buy vidya.

this

Imagine the smell

I wish I had the confidence/delusion these disgusting abominations have.

describe

I don't have to...I've been in stores like this. And Smash Melee tournaments. It's not pleasant to say the least.

Favorite midnight release?

Probably the Wii but going to the store and getting new 3DS XL along with MH4U was pretty comfy as there was no line just me and my bro showing up at midnight and buying them at Walmart.

I remember going to the midnight release for the PS3 at my local EB games.

I used to fuck my girlfriend in the back room after work. She would come pick me up when we closed because we lived together and shared a car. Yeah, we were always really nice to everyone who came it. It was in a nice neighborhood with lots of tourists and foot traffic and we'd set up karaoke parties too during Christmas time and people would gather and take turns. It was fun because there would be some big crowds. When madden 05 came out we had a big tournament at midnight. I don't give a shit about madden but it was popular. But yeah, it was me and three other guys that worked there and we were close knit and would go out to bars and clubs after work. One guy was a pretty big gambler and we stayed out all night at the casino and he had to open the store in the morning so he laid down a bunch of cardboard boxes on the floor and just slept there in the backroom until he had to open the store. It was a lot of fun and we were all there for about three years.

I went to the konami midnight press release for Silent Hill 3.
Went through a SH themed haunted house thing

nurses.jpg

got a mini-cd with bonus shit (picrel)
got a copy of the game
got the OST
got home at 5am
Woke up at noon-ish
played it all weekend in comfy mode.

Sounds awesome video game store bro. Thanks for sharing. Hope you were able to keep in contact with some of those dudes for a bit after you all went your separate ways.

theres something oddly comfy about a huge store where you can't even see the ceiling but with nothing but small shelves that are barely higher than you

Midnight releases were fun. Especially when you and friends go together and just chill. I've only been to two solo and it's kind of boring.
Last one I went to was GTAV's release. Easily the most packed on I've been to.
Halo 3's was probably the one I had the most fun during. For that one we were just sitting around on lawn chairs for about 4 hours and goofing off/swapping stories with friends and random people who came to sit with us.

not a midnight release but I remember going to eb games to get pokemon moon when it released and there was a queue of like thirty women to buy the new games and I was the only male

Went to a midnight release with a buddy for skyrim. Line up was all the way around the mall and inside it to the gamestop. We got there an hour early and managed to be in line just outside the mall entrance. My buddy was shitting bricks before we got there because he preordered the legendary edition and apparently only the first people in line were going to get an alduin statue. My other buddy and I were being slowpokes so he was getting really frustrated before we got there. I didn't preorder but there were enough copies of the base game. Nothing eventful happened. Everyone stood in line silently and patiently waiting for the store to open. He did manage to get his Alduin.

TBC Midnight Release was comfy.

I remember when Brawl came out everyone went to Gamestop for the midnight release and there were so many people there was a line outside.
I walked over to the Walmart right next to hit, hit the electronics section and one employee had a box with copies of the game and no one else. I was able to pick up some snacks and beer on my way out to. Man I miss 24/7 walmarts before those people ruined everything.

At the Skyrim midnight launch our line got heckled by some girls driving by. A based blerd immediately responded with "I don't see yo niggas anywhere!!". It shut them up too. God bless him.

November 9th, 2004- Halo 2. I was in college living with my gf in an apartment next to a mall, so I reserved a copy at the Gamestop there. There were probably 100 people in line, the hype was real. The most memorable moment was one guy jumping into the mall fountain and stomping around splashing water everywhere while yelling "HALO 2, WHOOP-DEE-DOO!" It was ~12:45am when I got home and popped it into the Xbox, played for 20 minutes, then turned it off and went to bed.
I wish I could go back to those days, I was never happier.

I haven't talked to them in years because we all have families and stuff now but we were so close I could probably text them right at this very moment and see if they could hang out this weekend and they'd respond back right away with a yes. We had a great store back when it was fun. We all quit pretty much right before the 360 came out so this was a long time ago even though it doesn't feel like a long time

For me it was Media Play.

Those were the days. People felt more free to be themselves because the cell phone panopticon didn't exist yet

It was so much fun playing that first night. Everyone was so happy. Joyful was the only way to describe it. Feels like it was all a dream.

i did end up meeting a cute girl and got her number

So you called her, right?

where did you get this picture of me

Did it happen to be in San Diego? Sounds an awful lot like my store.
I don't think there are words that can make people who grew up after the mid 2000s understand how much better things used to be. Pervasive, invasive echnology sent us spiraling into a darker reality.
To me it feels more like that is reality and the last couple decades have been a disturbing dream. Any day now we'll wake up to Adult Swim and Halo 2 and the pre-social media world.

I know the feel, sometimes I wonder if I died back then and have been in some sort of hell ever since.

Never done such a thing. Nothing like that is ever fucking fun. Did you used to enjoy camping out for black friday, too? Why would I WANT to sit in a fucking line at midnight? Just to say I did?

Went to the Dark Souls midnight launch at a Gamestop in the middle of a shopping center parking lot. There was only 10 people outside with preorder receipts. Soon as midnight hit they let us in and everyone got their copy. It was fun, everyone outside waiting was talking about their favorite parts of Demon Souls

fuck yeah.gif - 322x322, 596.68K

The point was going with your friends and shooting the shit while you waited, of course it would be lame if you did it alone.

I went to walmart to get metal gear solid 4 at midnight and they said they didn't have it, so I drove 100 mph to the next closest walmart 15 miles away and got it there. That was the only time I've ever driven over ~85.

Just go hang out somewhere else. Shit things don't suddenly become unshit because some other people are there.

Pervasive, invasive technology sent us spiraling into a darker reality

Remember when it was impossible (well, unreasonably difficult) to be filmed and broadcast for the entire planet to see? Remember when we weren't all trying to please an imaginary cabal of twitter posters with everything we say outloud lest we be judged?

Things will never feel as good as they did in the 2000s, we lost a chunk of our collective humanity when we let social media into our lives.

Even dogshit is fun with friends, you can put it in a bag and light it on fire on someone's porch for a laff

the same reason "grown men" take a vacation to rush trough a game they waited months for, retardation

They should lock you up

I lived in San Diego. And I remember everyone at my job was obsessed over Halo 3 coming out. Wouldn't shut up about it for weeks. Then it comes out and they complained for weeks about it sucking compared to 2.

Wild. I'm the anon who posted and I live in San Diego now!

Thanks God, one less retard to see outside.

no punishment could be worse than mgs5

serious question, were you a neglected child?
if you were ever excited for christmas or your birthday you shouldn't have trouble understanding this

You're an adult now. Anon do you genuinely have trouble sleeping the night before some Bing Bing of Duty 19 comes out?

As an adult, you get excited before the game comes out. Then once you finally have it, you lose interest in playing it.

It's not just games. Wanting is always more stimulating than having.
