Ask the Developers: Mario Kart World
Why does nintendo disown DKC characters? I'd rather play as krusha than conkdor.
God I wish they did a cartoon render instead of the modern sterile plastic textures
They sure went full burger culture pandering with this game huh
Why does nintendo disown DKC characters? I'd rather play as krusha than conkdor
Nintendo has always had a hatred for the success of DKC, not just because a non-Nintendo affiliated company managed to do something good with it, but effectively solidified the design of Donkey Kong to be the Rareified version for almost 30 years.
The popularity of K. Rool being added to Smash Bros was probably a rude awakening of sorts for them and they wanted to redesign him in any way they could. The Mario movie was just the start, but it got the proverbial ball rolling.
That pic of Bowser and Bowser Jr is amazing.
Touring Pauline in the middle picture
cute
hopefully it's actually in the game
top right casual dress peach is also magical
I was about to say this. The only Nintendo IP's I care about are DK and Metroid but it's amazing the ‘love’ so to speak they still put into Mario. All the pic related stuff looks like fan art instead of actual work + I fucking love that scooter art
World's development started in late 2017 after ARMS was complete.
Started as a Switch 1 game before being moved to Switch 2 in 2020 after work on the Booster Course Pass for 8 Deluxe started to not compromise on the game's ambitions.
Would have been called Mario Kart 9 if the game was simply a follow-up to 8 Deluxe with new tracks.
Soundtrack uses more live instruments this time around.
The soundtracks includes 200 tracks, "all brand-new arrangements".
One day cycle is 24 minutes of in-game time.
Rail and Wall Riding was added to make driving between tracks less boring.
100 tracks in the game if you count all the variable path between tracks.
Karts can be customized with stickers you find in Free Roam.
Indeed, Super Mario Kart gave the impression of drivers being crammed into a narrow course. Looking at it from that perspective, this game does have rounded edges to its visual design, like in the original game.
Ishikawa: The characters in the Super Mario series have a rounded look, so we wanted to give the vehicles a rounded design too, to match their appearance. We also wanted to give the characters a livelier look even while they're in their vehicles, so we put everything together in a way that gives off a sense of playfulness through the combination of the characters' rounded designs, soft facial expressions, and rich movements.
Lots of interesting tidbits as usual.
These pics are great but 99% of this creativity gets filtered out of the final product
hopefully diddy is a secret character and that's why his new render was revealed
That's pretty much the standard for everything (not just games), there are plenty of examples where the ‘behind the scenes’, art books and etc are far better than the final product
That picture is anti-American...
Ask them why they made mario's cheeks so chubby
> Would have been called Mario Kart 9 if the game was simply a follow-up to 8 Deluxe with new tracks.
Kind of a weird logic considering the games weren't even numbered before 7, and it's still technically Mario Kart 9 regardless
The creative part goes away after they go through the charts and metrics stage
To match the artwork of Super Mario Kart, as everyone had already guessed.
Never share your concept art. Look how good the game could be but won't ever be close to is not how you sell things but since you are Nintendo and you have cults and bonus, share more.
all of those characters are awful except donkey and diddy
The center panel looks like it’s from a splatoon artist?
concept art is meant to be disposable, it's not meant to be the game (look at all those pics where nobody drives) it's there to be a buffet of ideas where actual game designers define the mood of the project.
Oh man, there's a DS Credits arrangement in here somewhere
youtube.com
Sweet lord
Did my own tldr of the interview here
It really doesn't seem to be the case here.
We have at least 5 Mario Kart 9s at this point.
actual
Game designers are not the ones making the mood of the game. That's the director, art director, and artists.
Game designers are literally working with blank placeholder props to design the gameplay environment
> Rail and Wall Riding was added to make driving between tracks less boring.
we recognized that the stupid gimmick we added to this game isn't fun, but we went forward with it anyway!
lol
over 200 remixes of mario music just for freeroam
my hype has just skyrocketed.
solves it by making it fun
what's the problem here?
Mario Kart is fun and all, but we all know how its going to end up
less boring
still boring, but less.
People who have played Knockout Tour at preview events said it's one of the most fun parts of the game.
World design was made to be intrusive so you know which direction to go without a bunch of signs or arrows
lol they didn't fell for the yellow paint meme
Literally why they canceled kart customization in the new game
The city tracks in MK8D Booster Course Pass completely failed at this and were full of arrows to show how the route changed each lap, so I'm glad those aren't coming back.
I'm hoping for a week of fun before meta faggots ruin everything
I'm glad those aren't coming back.
We've already seen that they are, though. And the new tracks look like they were designed by the same team.
We already know all the retro tracks and the only one from MK8D is Sky High Sundae.
lol Wii also had optimal builds and shit
I didn't mean the tracks, I meant the floating arrows
Yes, that's what anon said, not the actual interview, brainlet.
I don't understand how they could take 8 years to make this game. That seems unsustainable. How the fuck does Nintendo have westernslop dev times?
Giant open world, and them trying to make it work on the fucking switch for 3 years
I don't understand how they could take 8 years to make this game. That seems unsustainable. How the fuck does Nintendo have westernslop dev times?
Nintendo have a relaxed working environment, don't treat their staff like shit or force crunch them. And you end up coding magic that shits on every other dev
They do mention the amount of content in the world outside the 32 tracks themselves would account for over 100 tracks if it had been made like a traditional Mario Kart.
I'm not reading the interview, not my problem that OP and Nintendo think the game is boring.
So do they really not mention MK Tour and it’s simultaneous development and how it affected things it all? And the associated MK8 BCP gets mentioned only once? I would’ve liked to know more details about the development of both of those things and how they affected World…
Wasn't MK tour made by a different company with asets from the pre-MK8 games?
I always understood that Nintendo worked with a slower pace and smaller teams than per say AC shadows .
Well then their next game better be out in 2 years or so. I don't want Nintendo to turn into snoy or bethesda.
If you check the credits roll of the Booster Course Pass you can see it was mostly done by a B-team, including the directors, sound designers, programmers etc. Seems like the main team was already working on World.
There has never been more than one Mario Kart per system. They could make something else like ARMS but I think DLC is more likely.
Let me guess: you saw the other anon posted the link and made a thread arouns it. Its ok, Im also interested but Im about to leave for work, I'll read in the afternoon. Anyway, good day anon, I send you a kiss in the mouth
It was a Switch 1 game for 3 years, and then they moved it to Switch 2 which must have dramatically changed the scope of the game considering that console can run shit like Cyberpunk 2077.
Also, like that other anon said, Nintendo doesn't rush things, TOTK had a whole year for polish and Mario Wonder straight up didn't have a deadline.
MKT was done by their smart device team, completely different guys. Only effect the booster courses had was just to give them more time to work on MKW
MKW is considered to be MK9
Official confirmation that MKT is NOT a mainline game. Anyone who said otherwise is wrong
I don't consider mobileshit real videogames at all.
Huge open world + at least one year was entirely for testing
It would be nice if they included some custom track option since you have the whole open world to race on, kinda like on the Mario Kart Live toy
As far as we know, the main team did work on MKT, we just don’t have detailed staff credits for it for whatever reason
Yes that's what I mean. The next game by this EPD team.
I hope that baby Rosalina has a lot of cute outfits.
I’d rather play as a Zinger than a damn Cow or Fishbones
Speaking of Splatoon it’s 10th Anniversary is coming soon, May 28th iirc?
Never forget Miyamoto’s divine statement
oh snap official art of the ladies together, also hope that pauline outfit makes it in
yep, just a week away.
They legitimately intended to do a 24 player open world Mario kart on the switch 1
That's insane, I was sure those features were only introduced when the game was moved to the switch 2.
Glad They didn't, that would have looked like and run like absolute shit.
Nintendo just let artist draw more stuff now.
Remember when Capcom used to do this, those were great times.
Nintendo has always had a hatred for the success of DKC,
DK Jungle Beat was a love letter to DKC and that team is now making Bananza
Nintendo isn’t the type of company that celebrates anniversary. So probably just one tweet message and nothing else is gonna happen
Tranny Kart
nah i'm good
your hierarchy is all wrong.
My question to the developers:
Why is the game $80 dollars.
Sky High Sundae is a track in World. Plus timing wise the game started development in 2017 and Tour released in 2019.
It being in development since 2017, I'd say overbudget.
Because it's the new industry standard
Please understand
hope they release a full artbook for this game. surely there's enough material after 8 years of dev
All those years of people saying Nintendo considers MK Tour a mainline game and that it's MK9
Nintendo straight up says that the only reason World isn't called 9 is because they think the design of the game is fundamentally different from the rest, so they dropped the numbering
It took 8 years because almost half of that time was spent as a Switch 1 game and the Switch 1 is so shit that the game couldn't meet their standards. Switching systems mid-development obviously means more dev time, it's just like how Pikmin 4 took ages because it switched from a Wii U game to a Switch game.
Doug Bowser already answered your question
im scared sonic racing will have a zazz meta
Doesn't make any sense, meta has existed in every mario kart.
It's gonna happen in this game too.
