FF8 Thread

Whatever.

correct opinion. The haters are not sentient, it's scientifically proved.

trains?

selphie.jpg - 231x651, 75.22K

I'm having the opposite problem I had with FF7 when I first played that game. The materia system in that game didn't really care if I engaged with it, but I still steamrolled the game in a completely mindless way.

FF8 is a game that demands that you engage with the junction system but doing so in the most barebones way makes you insanely overpowered and I'm steamrolling the game regardless of what I do. The only difference is that I personally enjoy this level of commitment this game asks of you.

the main quest of ff8 is pretty low difficulty but as you go for optional content that really spikes your power with better junctions and shit the difficulty increases. good balance imo.

Best FF

I'll train her alright

yeah the feast or famine aspect of the junction is shit. Overall the system was clearly unfinished/tested. Just like the story in fact.

How is ff8 for side content like superbosses? I like to grind like an autist and perfect my build, would I like this game?

there's ultima weapon and omega weapon. a good amount of grinding whether it's ap for gf abilities, cards for turning them into items, or mugging so items can be used for ultimate weapons or giving gf good abilities.

I dont think there are even super bosses except maybe one right in the final dungeon but there are a ton of optional bosses and GFs and the time spent grinding and stealing super level magics to equip is a big thing.

The card game is amazing too though, wish every game had a triple triad.

I love how misunderstood Squall is as a character online, just like Cloud was back in the late 2000s/early 2010s due to Advent Children. People say he's he's always mopey but my boy is a child soldier in an institution where everyone around him is practically incompetent and puts on a strong leader front because he feels he needs to and to keep others at arm's length. You go back through the game and Squall pretty much carries the entire cast on his back being an advisor, a leader, emotional pillar, and their strongest fighter. That scene where Irvine starts bitching out over shooting Edea and Squall calmly talks him back into the right mindset to take the shot and when that fails does he blame him? No. He gives him genuine praise for trying his best despite his turmoil, then hops down into a fucking car drifting through the streets up to the float and tries to kill the bitch himself knowing it's a suicide mission. He'll waver here and there sure, but it's always in moments like OP's scene where he's alone in his room and gets all reflective and lets his barriers down. He's pretty great.

Well, you're for a rude awakening because the disc 3 is rushed anf awful.

The Tonberry King sidequest is honestly pretty neat. You have to defeat at least 20 tonberries which are completely unique enemies in this game, then he shows up randomly to fight you. After that you get him as a junctionable GF with some really cool abilities. You can increase or decrease enemy levels so you can draw more or less powerful magic for refining shit. The ability Initiative lets you immediately act in the beginning of battle instead of filling up your ATB gauge. You can even learn abilities that lower the prices at item shops and unlocks the ability to buy rare items at shops. It's a pain in the ass to do but once you learn you can kill them pretty easily with Zell's Meteor Strike it's worth it.

is is true that it's a very "psychological" FF like ff7?

I heard the game has level-scaling or shit like that which ruins it.

OP here, this game feels a lot more human and personal than FF7 ever will or wishes it was. FF7 couldn't hook me at all because the game focuses way too much on Cloud to the point that the other characters get pushed to the wayside. Not to mention that crucial moments in the game are bogged down if you don't have the right party combinations. Meanwhile this game makes a genuine effort to give each character the limelight to flesh them out, and they don't need a whole ass 3 hour introspective segment to reveal some plot twist that makes the main character lamer than he actually is.

Whatever...

The tone overall felt more mature too. Still my favourite FF.

Yeah enemies have level scaling based on the average party level. It's not as bad as it seems really. Enemies are never too much of a hassle to engage with and the only real thing it ties into is the draw system, where the higher level you are, the higher grade of magic you can draw from enemies. So long as you keep up with the junctioning system (which is really easy to do), enemies getting stronger as you level up is never an issue. Hell if you get bored fighting enemies, one of your GF's that you get early on has an ability you can get that completely turns off enemy encounters.

the year of our lord two thousand and twenty mods

still no mods to fix that disgusting j-pop Squall model in the 'remaster'

Yes. My only real complaints with FF8 was the performance/visuals on PS1 felt sloppy and the game world/world map just wasn't as interesting as it could have been, like they had cool set pieces and concepts but never made the most of them.

thanks, but that's not really what i'm asking, i'm asking, if this is the FF with the most psychological vibes outside of ff7, i heard only ff8 and ff7 have that

You played it as a angsty teenager and heard "whatever" and thought: mature.

It's midling.

because it's perfectly fine and only you have problem with it, chudcel

tedious grinding is le good

thinking that hideous dissidia copy-and-paste model is 'fine'

play the good remastered, not this old boomer trash

The card game is amazing too though, wish every game had a triple triad

TT was fun until I played someone with random and mixed rules. That one rule makes the game actual dogshit, and I'm too stupid to figure out how to abolish it.

yfw you realize Seifer got obsessed with this film which is why his gunblade stance is the same as Laguna's here

Are you talking about the Tonberries or getting the abilities? I don't typically grind in RPG's ever but getting abilities in this game is incredibly easy past the 1st disc since enemies start to give you an insane amount of AP. Just don't run away from every battle and you should be okay.

The remaster is ugly as shit and runs at 15 fps in battles, no fucking thank you.

dominating the world with your own ruleset is part of the game

I thought he was cool at first but this ugly ass motherfucker is always stealing my thunder

psychological vibes

there isn't a "scene set inside the main characters own brain while he comes to term with shit" trope. There is however a meaningless korean melodrama amnesia plot..... speed bump? out of nowhere.

his ROMANTIC dream, slay the dragon save the princess/queen. what an amazing dad.

Played it as a kid, still don't understand who Laguna is.

the "remaster" with blurry background because SE doesn't have the originals and can't even bother to do what randos do in their free time with AI upscaling.

he's basically the most important person in the history of the world but actively unimportant in the current part of the story,.

he is squall's dad you retard.

You've just solved a minor, life-long mystery for me so thanks. The card game, exploration, combat and finding secret summons like Doomtrain are all top tier.

He is Squall's father

He's probably a lot of guys dads if the Irvine model is anything to go by its not. Maybe he banged Julia offscreen and Rinoa+Squall is incest. he didnt

Is there a retranslation mod? If I recall, Squall originally wasn't so "whatever" in the original Japanese. Not that I hate the English translation, just curious how different it is

Ok ok - niggle me this then
What the fuck is Eden
Some of those summon animations stick in my mind to this day.

Eden's a Cid tier FF meme, it's just thrown into every game somewhere in different roles.

Maybe she banged him when he was drunk and passed out in he room.

your good old symbolism. It's not relevant to the story anyway like all the summons, at least in term of individuality.

play the psx version dummy

I dont think the timelines match up but there is some serious implication Laguna could be Rinoa's father. Julia waited for him to come back from war but he was MIA'd and she married the general and then died really young. All the melodramas.

Wish more games involved cosmic entities nuking stuff for you. iirc I preferred Bahamut in FF8.
youtube.com/watch?v=OKZZEPoVb4c

I played Remaster with these
It looked alright

I see what you did there but yes, it is. Every single PS1 FF is kino of the highest order.

Rinoa definitively has Launga's carefree and upbeat attitude.

yeah for what it's worth FF7's bahamut zero shoots shit from space.

Holy shit my eyes, the amount of mods to make the remaster playable makes me gag.

This is a direct capture of the PS1 version of the game on composite cables and I think it looks great as is

Rinoa is also a massive fuckup, it could fit.
that unironically looks terrible, arent there filters to de-CRTize that shit?

needs more scanline, i'm still able to see some pixels

In motion it looks a lot better trust me. This is the game running with S-Video. There are some filter options with the scaler I have it hooked up to, but I prefer the look of the game with composite cables.

In motion it looks a lot better trust me.

The game looked like shit in motion even on the day it released. FF9 was somehow even worse.

what even was the fucking point of the white seed?

Selphie's short yellow dress, Selphie's panties, I swear u could see them

yeah but you should get the AUTHENTIC shit and not this cable fuckup shit.

the "true" seed, just a little last resort option. we see that it sort of worked in the future palace place, only the white seed survived to fight ultimicia.

Probably cut content, FF8 is known for it. Game was developed in a year and a half and they had way more plans for locations in the world map and story scenes. Laguna was meant to have almost as much screentime as Squall in many more flashback scenes.

CUT CONTENT.jpg - 4048x3036, 2.34M

Honestly filters like these make the game look too dark for my liking. I have an actual CRT and it looks nothing like this. So I just play with no filters whatsoever. I feel like some hipster faggot who desperately wants to experience outdated technology to onions out about the "authentic experience" as if it'll actually impact how I feel about the game.

Disc 3 is fucking fantastic. Disc 4's lack of things to do is made up for by the greatest final dungeon in video games, coupled with a complete tonal shift

plus disc 4 had that long fucking finale video

yeah it's obvious Eshtar and Laguna got cut hard. Heck I wouldn't be surprised if Adel was meant to be the true final boss but they couldn't expend her so they stitched Ultimecia to give more of a "bigger bad" feel.

oh if youre actually playing on crt then definitely disregard. it looks "fine" on crt, the authentic shittiness.

the sorceress timeline shit is great anyway, adel was beaten by a fucking laguna so how good could she be?

I adore the final cutscene. Squall losing his shit, and that shot of him without a face made me shit my pants as a kid, and still makes me a little uneasy today.

I wanna take goofy Selphies with her

did ff8 invent social media?

adel was beaten by a fucking laguna so how good could she be

tbf the sequence was retarded and forced, borderline comedy. No way that was the original intent.

disagree, laguna segments are always slapstick and its great. he's a glorious buffoon.

mfw seeing compression of time FINALLY get the recognition it deserves

survive.jpg - 892x587, 31.41K

Tried to play it as a kid. Gave up at the dream sequence where some retard was tossing a harpoon and then running after it to pick it up again

you should complete it

Absolutely the best piece of music in the game, the section at 1:48 still gives me goosebumps. What an absolute triumph of a soundtrack.

How bad is 8's translation really?

i couldn't say as to whether the japanese is better really but it's full of unlocalizable weird jap shit.

NORG
DID
NOTHING
WRONG

ff8 had a great soundtrack overall

cover.jpg - 1000x1000, 206.15K

I would say significant enough to matter if you really like FF8.
Characters archetypes aren't changed dramatically but the way they present their traits is smoother in the original. Dialogue that is stunted in english often flows better.
Squall is a commonly posted example where several more involved answers were rendered as the beloved whatever.
Something similar is true for Rinoa where she's at least slightly more rounded and if you can pickup on the way her speaking habits are written for example you get a better understanding via characterization that is often implicitly present in Japanese.
Then you have the general erroneous or nuance-lacking translation choices you get with almost any eng>jap translation.

Individually these things wouldn't matter that much and even then it might not rock your world but combined they do affect how you might view the story and characters, especially when it comes to Squall and Rinoa.
It doesn't help that FF8 already does things like making a significant scene dependent on a stupid minigame.

youtube.com/watch?v=HNefNLOHVYk

Still the GOAT vidya love ballad. Why don't more game creators make catchy banger songs and then weave them into the fabric of the world and story, making them that much more memorable? They did it in 1999. Why can't they do it in 2025?

Well that is what the mentally ill purists want

final fantasy x-2 happened

The greatest and most ambitious Final Fantasy game.

Uematsu's peak

true

I think

kys to death

None of x-2's songs are anywhere close to Eyes on Me tho.

its really sad cause chrono cross had this whole system of like algorithmic speech pattern tweaking that would have been nice for what they seem to be going for in ff8.

I used to be entirely indifferent to this song as a kid. As an adult i completely fell in love with it. Superior to all the other love songs from FF, even Suteki Da Ne, in my opinion.

Ultimecia is Rinoa from the future.

I mostly agree. However, I didn't really feel the overworld when I first played it to be honest, especially compared to the overworld songs of the games its sandwiched between. It creates a lonely atmosphere which fits the mood of Squall atleast.

squall death timey wimey loops

Nah.

the other overworld songs are a bit cheap because they're just rearranged version of their game's main theme, which tend to have a lot of work put into it since well it's the main theme. FF8 on the other end had a truly unique one.

too young to appreciate FFVI themes

FFVII was extremely gay

FFVIII will always be my favorite FF, the gunblade, rinoa, laguna, seifer, the scar, the music, the places, ragnarok, Balamb Garden, Ultimecia, Irvin. Hate the damage done by Spoony and other reviewers, people just take them too seriously, i can even imagine some retards actual junctioning cures and fires in the early game for almost no stat gain.

youtube.com/watch?v=KyPFEN8v65A&

People who shit on the game just do so because the story goes off the fucking rails with plotholes and weird discontinuities. The experience provided by the game itself is actually really well-delivered and entertaining from start to finish. It's a genuinely wonderful game that only gets shit on by people who are beyond fart-huffing levels of pretentiousness.

Why didn't they just keep 君がいるから and Eternal love?

Disgusting. Sounds like generic pop music. No offense.

What can i do for you What can i do for you

too young to appreciate FFVI themes

FFVII was extremely gay

Bruh, what? FFVI is such a massively overrated game that I can't help but wonder what "themes" you felt like you were underappreciating lol. And I can't take the opinion of anyone who thinks of FFVII as "extremely gay" seriously. FFVIII's a great game, but your opinion sucks and you should kill yourself.

Yes that one was trash as well but it also had 1000 words which is fantastic.

Cyan wife and kid dying and the soul train, kefka killing that entire village, Sabin and Edgar friction and attitudes, Locke and his crystal onahole, Celes being treated like trash, etc.

None of those are themes

They were sold on the Leona Lewis hype train, and it honestly seemed like a sound decision with her featuring in what would become one of the biggest movies of all time in James Cameron's Avatar. It just made little thematic sense to the game's story and felt more like a side song from a random album from her rather than The Anthem for a Final Fantasy mainline game. Like, say what you will about 15, but atleast that fit and they managed to somehow tie it into the main FF musical theme.

those are events, not themes
are you fucking retarded or just esl

Grief and Inadequacy

Seifer cuts Odin in half if you got him early

I've never played 8 before. I bought the remaster 2 years ago, but still haven't started it.

do it

The way he tries to storm off after failing but she grabs him and insists they keep going anyways.

FFVIII isn't even in my top 5 of Final Fantasy games but I'm in the mood to replay it thanks to this thread. Can I just emulate the original PS game or are there specific mods to make the game have higher definition?

Its preference really. I'd emulate it with a CRT filter, but others may disagree

The botched translation job is at fault.

What mental illnesses do you suffer? That looks blurrier and shittier than when I played it on a busted old television through the fucking RF input on a VCR. God you kids are stupid.

duckstation, the demake models are whack

I really liked the GF and magic junction in this game, if only they made the draw mechanic less obnoxious and time consuming. Also I remember that some characters like Squall would always draw 9 magic per turn while some only drew 5-6, was there anything behind that like a characters level or how many GF's they had junctioned?

Your magic stat determined the draw rate, drawing stuff with 3 users with high magic to get 3 times 9 guaranteed makes drawing way less of a burden that it otherwise is.
You still need to be at least a little smart about not drawing things like low level spells you can just refine in 2 seconds, but anything else you can then also just get over with quite easily.

Played this for the first time a couple years ago and enjoyed it. Don't get all the memes about it being bad.

I wish balamb garden was real

It is and with a simple step you too can go there.

Closest you'll get is the Balamb Garden room in VR chat

Those Spoony videos were the Plinkett reviews of vidya in that both are fucking awful but easily swayed sheep

"You're not nice!"

From the start Rinoa is the only one to directly square off with Squall with her real thoughts huh...

She really just breaks her way into Squall's walls with her naive force of will.
The contrast to approaches like Quistis' could have been a bit more coherent, but I like their dynamic a lot.

There's some confusion with the story, peopel who got super into FF7 (probably their only FF) didn't jive with the "high school mercs save the world" thing, or the love themes probably.

peopel who got super into FF7 (probably their only FF) didn't jive with the "high school mercs save the world" thing, or the love themes probably.

I was a teen when VII and VIII came out. VII was the 1st FF me and my friend group played. We LOVED VIII. We thought the characters looking the same on the field and following was cool as hell. We Thought gunblades were cool as hell.
From my experience, the hate for VIII came later from online discussion. But thats just my own experience being there at the time.
