It all started when we as kids worshipped the most caffeinated beverage we could get our hands on. The soda called surge was banned because it was “too caffeinated” and it held a cult like status in our childhood minds. The next most caffeinated thing like surge was Mountain Dew so it naturally took over. When monster and energy drinks came they took over. Mountain Dew is the prequel to monster energy drinks. Mountain Dew cemented its status as gamer fuel from before monster and other competitors showed up, didn’t mountain dew start monster? Is monster their own company now, when did that happen?

I dunno, but Mountain Dew was really popular in the 90s and early 2000s with gamers. even before it was advertised to them.

They use to market it towards extreme sports and skater dudes but the 18-25 demographic stopped doing those things and switched to video games. They briefly tried to move back to active lifestyle marketing by showing dudes out fishing drinking mtn dew but it must not have worked because those types of people drink beer instead. Fun fact: Mountain Dew was originally intended to be used as a mixer for whiskey.

Bawls was the unofficial drink of PC gaming in the early aughts.

Yeah, it was actually more iconic, but it isn't a 1:1 thing with Dew because you couldn't chug a 12 pack of Bawls or you'd die.

Red Bull tried forcing itself as the gamer drink but nobody really cared. Mountain Dew forced itself in too but the aesthetic of it was better.

I don't remember Redbull having any gamer ads but I'm not american, so maybe they just didn't air here. What I do remember is that tons of Redbull ads had adults going to work or smoking or other 30 year old activity so seeing those ads growing up I always associated it as something for adults, but not the cool adults, the boring ones. That pretty much killed any desire I had in ever trying it out. Monster focused more on comparing itself to coke, like it was the next logical step and drinking it will make you cool and it worked, now I'm fucking addicted to this shit
