The best option for a cyberpunk sequel would have been to port the city over to the next game largely unchanged, just improved.
It's a huge waste of time to force them to develop a new city when night city is already pretty much the best city in videogames and 99% of it is unexplored inaccessible space. You could set an entire spin off game in a single one of the megabuildings if they made one more accessible and there are 12 of them already in the city.

Most of the developed world in Cyberpunk is generally stable enough to operate as a regular citizen, and outlaw elements are punished everywhere but specific sectioned-off shitholes. The vast majority of Japan at this point is either under direct Arasaka control or some measure of the shrinking government or smaller megacorporations' control, but very little of it constitutes the lawless hellscape that makes for the kind of Cyberpunk story where you can actually retain "punk" elements.

Neuromancer is probably the best. If you already played Cyberpunk you'll be shocked how many names and concepts are lifted straight from it. It has some sequels that are a bit lesser, but still enjoyable if you want more. Then there's the short story collection Burning Chrome by William Gibson if you want even more of the Sprawl. I also read Snow Crash. It was OK and had some cool world building and ideas, but I didn't like it nearly as much as the Gibson stuff. Enjoy, choom.

I probably didn't explain well enough. In the RED/2045 setting the world is so shitty that the tech level hasn't advanced past 2020, so finding a crate of 2020 gear is considered good. Individual inventors are making stuff better than 2020 but without access to large-scale manufacturing it's all prototypes and one-offs. But 2077 seems to have corps operating as normal so I think they're developing new and better tech again (like power and tech weapons). But you are right and there could totally be some 4th corporate war secret weapons that Arasaka and Militech were secretly pouring billions of Eddie's to produce, but then the Datakrash happened so the records are gone and the whole development team gets killed by a rival execution squad so now the greatest gun ever developed is sitting in a research station disguised as an oil drilling platform in the gulf of Mexico.

Main lesson to learn: Never let beancounters, HR, marketing staff, and investors dictate development processes. Their ambitions always clash with reality and what investors want and advertise isn't always achievable. You need to be real and give people proper working conditions. Cyberpunk 2077's case is really shameful one because the game was remade at least thrice and suits with bean counters were putting sticks into gears.

Concession accepted. Seriously, at least next time talk about the direct inspirations like Netrunning. But in my opinion, in that case you should still respect Pondsmiths own flavour he adds to it and the actual effort of turning it from an idea to a system.

It's still a decent game. Much like Deus Ex and VtMB, you have lots of different ways to play game and you get pretty good tone which reflects the setting quite well. Only problems (at least in my opinion) are that devs didn't implement real Cyberpunk RPG system properly where you'd get affect by amounts of augmentations and implants you have and dialogue being rudimentary, and also too many levels for your character (30 would have been plenty, 50 is too much and makes you too OP).
As for New Vegas, you need to understand it was made not out of goodwill but because Obsidian was financially fucked and needed money really badly.

Pondsmith in general is a strange persona that's capable of rolling out kino and writing straight garbage in equal amounts. Like how he turned Africa into this nigh utopian set of nations that managed to go to space, or wrote the whole fucking fiasco that is Cyberpunk 3000.

New Vegas launch was disastrous to the point Bethesda and Obisidian asked players to not refund the game, and developers were hauling their asses to at least half of things that were broken. It was mocked by most people for being in desert, being mostly brown/orange, and being borderline unplayable. Console versions were badly broken and only partially got fixed, while having lots of remaining problems (like performance being affected by playtime for example). PC version's problems lasted until ~2014 when 4GB patch came out and YUP fixed some of bugs. New Vegas started to really shine ~2019 when modders found ways to fix engine bugs, until then, it was known for being magical work where it was a gamble whether game will crash or not.
