it was very bare bones and boring, the evil cunt was so lame. It also set up the whole EPIC LEGENDARY SLAYA OF ANCIENT TIMES that steered Eternal fully into that direction. Not to mention 2016 seemed very confused about it's lore, seemingly implying the Doom Marine was the guy who had his son taken and killed.

I found a Doom 2 gameplay Wad that's like Eternal's gameplay but without any of the nuDoom terrible ideas like glory kills and enemy based resource management (except armor) or forced weapon puzzles, I didn't have the time to play it yet, but I'm pretty damn excited about it. It really looks like what I wanted Eternal to be like and I rather play that than bother with TDA.

I don't think 2016 is super complicated when you finally get the good guns, but it's much less forgiving than Eternal.
Eternal even gives you 5HP and a brief window of relative safety if you lose a lethal amount of health fast enough. 2016 doesn't do that.

In theory yes, in practice there are many parts of 2016 that don't have the green highlights. The one that makes me seethe the most is a cargo deck where you had to parkour through the cargo but none of the crates had green highlights, and there was zero indication there could even be anything above the floor

Hugo even talked about it in some video, it's to create "memorable moments" where you claw your way back from 5HP (and with the tools the game gives you, it's not impossible, shield yourself, freeze the largest group of monsters, ignite them and punch your way to 150/200).

The way I played 2016 is just blowing up enemies before they could even hit me. Using Gauss in Siege Mode. GKs are a trap on Nightmare unless you're like finishing the last enemy in the fight or killing useless zombies.
In Eternal it's a constant tug of war, demons hit me, I hit them harder and take back the resources, it's really fun and pushes you into an aggressive mindset.
I completed DE on UNM, but I wouldn't even attempt 2016 UN. Fuck the instakill platforming and fuck the combat loop.
It does it 3 or 4 times, with the longest one being the Sam Hayden exposition dump. The others are all less than 3 minutes. And that is significantly less time than the the sheer number of, "Hey! Look! We just opened a door in this fucking tiny arena with exactly 2 doors Slayah! Stare at it! Stare at it for 10 fucking seconds!" that Shiternal forces you to do 100 times. If you add up all the unskippable shit Shiternal forces on the player, you will find you actually get more of your time wasted than in 2016.

You're not getting Meathook until you survive Cultist Base for long enough which you likely won't, because that level is a giant difficulty spike on NM that'll humble you and force to play on UV.

I'd like if headshot kills on fodder and weakpoint breaks provided a bit of ammo. So you aren't literally getting ammo for just killing enemies, you have to be more specific in your aim, but you can keep fighting a bit longer if you're precise.
