You need to remember that Fallout 3 and Oblivion were literally some of the first 'hey do whatever you want' for many, many console owners and for its time, it was amazing

I also did play the older games and the endings at least made sense. I don't play Fallout for wacky Deadpool 4th wall breaks deconstructing the previous games, I play them for roleplaying with a gag here and there. The ending being a gag feels like a slap in the fast after you've spent probably hundreds of hours playing Fallout 3.

I don't even really hate Fallout 3, I think it's just game that didn't really get better with age and people started to see a lot of the half-baked elements common in Bethesda games (Even my beloved Fallout New Vegas has them too).

It's obnoxious how RPG gatekeepers have basically decided that plot/dialogue is the only thing that matters when evaluating a game. FO3 has a better open world map than NV which is kind of relevant when both games are open world. It's the same thing with ME1 purists. Yeah, I can see why one would say ME2/3 are conceptually weaker because they diverged from Star Trek vibes to become a generic war story, but the gameplay improvements are literally night and day. You can't just ignore that stuff when it's so much of the experience.
