Goddamn I miss XCOM threads

goddamn I miss XCOM threads

I miss good video games in general

XCOM lost to this

file.jpg - 1280x720, 100.66K

Outside being woke with a shit art style Xcom Chimera Squad was quite fun. Its only 3 bucks at the moment on Steam and if you can get paste the rather hug-a-thon the characters (that aren't Torque) convey it has some pretty neat gameplay. It certinaly isn't Xcom 2 levles of depth but it is a nice spin off.

Man i miss tactic turn based

oh god I remember that game

I didn't like the "woker" elements to it for sure, but at least they weren't hypocrites and also included stuff like outright viper strip clubs.

We don't deserve good things.

Its funny. I dont mind having randomly generated nigger operatives from Uganda, but being forced to play with one grinds my gears.

They'll be back when Jake's Star Wars XCOM game comes out
Just over a year away...

I remember this video. It made me remember true evil exists.

XCOM 2 wasn't the terrorist simulator people thought it would be

Easier than EU/EW even though you're supposed to be the underdogs

Most of the enemies you kill are just noseless humans and robots, with maybe 2-3 aliens per mission in the early game, and 5-6 in the late game

Ended on a cliffhanger that was never followed up on

Weird to think it's been almost a decade, and I'm still disappointed, I still have fun remembering the ISIS XCOM threads though

XCOM 2

Weird to think it's been almost a decade

Why would you do this to me?

Man Firaxis really went to shit not long after 2

One of the main guys left after they put out that Marvel game that flopped.

To this day I still don't understand wtf they were thinking with making Vahlen creating not just one but three fucking super ayyy that could ruin XCOM's missions.
At least Shen left behind a ship and an okayish bot.

Shen shouldn't have been killed off, he should have been a geriatric cyborg

I miss playing the first nucom, back when I was still young. Then they made the mixed bag that is nucom 2 and it was all downhill from there, ever since the first dlc. now I'm so old that I probably couldn't really enjoy an xcom 3 even if it had the same magic as the first one.

Easier than EU/EW

lol this isn't true. situations in EU/EW were always managable while in 2, things can easily get out of hand with bad encounters.

ua1.png - 640x348, 86.79K

Did I miss something with the cliffhanger? Ethereals were using humans DNA to engineer a human like doll they could control remotely but we blew them up. Isn't that all?

Terror from the deep cliffhanger at the end.

They try to tease EFTD with the WoTC expansion but shit goes nowhere.

Now you remember the true MVP

1748000305.png - 700x913, 181.84K

I had already checked out of the game by the time Alien Rulers and whatever the EW equivalent was came out, but I remember the base game being super easy, even on harder difficulties, at worst it was just kind of annoying.
I remember seeing people talk about 'a bigger threat that the ethereals trying to defeat', but that might of just been speculation about a sequel that never came. I think the last shot in the game was a glow at the bottom of the ocean or something though

goddamn I miss

Das Xcom baby

both xcom 2 and deus ex MD got followed up by Marvel shit that tanked and led to the teams being cut down with no sequel in sight

I have decided to not like any ongoing series

Does Anon Babble likes XEW Long War? I always try to do a full run of that mod and always drop it halfway.

234235243234.png - 190x200, 17.79K

I liked Mario + Rabbids Kingdom battle but did not like Sparks of Hope

Will I like Xcom?

I hated how sparks of hope had so many time wastey battles roaming around on a map that weren't thought out well. even though kindom battle was way more linear, every encounter felt unique

It's a shame they abandoned xcom to make a marvel slop flop

Xcom 1 is on sale for 6 bucks and Xcom 2 is on sale for 3 bucks.
Which is better?

It's probably for the best they stopped after Chimera Squad. I'd rather they just reboot the thing instead of continuing down the retarded path they're going with the story and setting.

2 + wotc is more fun
1 is more "pure"

Chimera squad is cringe

Why nobody has made notXcom? THE ONE WHICH DOESN'T LOOK LIKE IT WAS MADE IN 1992,THAT IS

They're both kinda shit. You can think of them as mod platforms, I guess that's a way to justify buying them.
If you really want 3d, then Phoenix point is correct one to go for. Make sure you pirate it, Epic paid for the development of Phoenix point, there is no reason to buy it. I guess Steam makes it easier to plug in mods but it's easy enough on its own.
Also there is Xenonauts which is obviously better than any of those, but that's 2d.

Chimera Squad is woke

Conclusion of one of the three main quest lines is literally ‘most Mutons belong in a planet prison’

Everyone plays Open XCOM anyways now

in my opinion xcom EU/EW is more fun

It exists anon.
And on life support.

xenonauts-2.jpg - 1920x1080, 343.18K

All these posts calling Chimera Squad woke

The Nativist snake was fucking great.

it bothers me that Snapshot is owned by Embracer group so they *could* be making a Phoenix Point 2 or a Lord of teh Rings Tactics game but instead they are making some action tower defence hero game where you have an avatar running around.

Why are they making the wrong game?!!

Woke means "I don't like it"

no Resident Evil XCOM-like game

99% chance to hit

misses

This does make me a bit mad.

They supported Phoenix point for a long time, they released a pretty big overhaul of the game as well.
I mean yeah, they're off making shovelware slop now, but they did enough.

In original x-com you can have a 100%+ chance to hit and still miss because it was an impossible shot

1% to hit

blow that alien's head clean off

that's XCOM yada yada

Missing because the shot is impossible is fine, missing when your gun is literally in the alien's mouth is why I uninstalled the game.

It plays rather well on console too. I get the least amount of crashes on my ps5 version of the game. I dont enjoy it on SteamDeck
There was a warhammer chaos gate game that was almost a good tactics game but it had too much min maxing with movement between encounters that would cause warp surges if you didnt play in a tedious way that made the game monotonous and repetitive.

without mods? XCOM2+WOTC
with mods, XCOM EU/EW

I loved all the ISIS themed shit that came out of the XCOM2 announcement saying you're basically terrorists this time

There was a warhammer chaos gate game

Remember that one vaguely. I played that like 10-15 years ago and there was one broken file in the game attached to a cultist laser pistol that would crash the game if you didn't kill all the cultists on the map before they could get one shot off.
I think there might have been a fix for it, but the forums where I found people talking about it eat the posts with the fix so I just had to fuck around until it gets done.
The theme song is forever stuck in my head though.
youtube.com/watch?v=_tvsExvmIl8

It's a deeply progressive game anon

You know what else is progressive? Rush.

2/3 of the game is literally ‘a lot of aliens are quite bad actually’
Two of the enemy factions are alien supremacists

Oh, there's a new one with Gray knights instead of Ultrasmurfs. Guess I have to try it out then, here's to hoping it isn't shit.
What I really like about the original is that what you get is what you go through the game with, you can't buy anything. If you somehow run out of ammo, you're done for so you have to keep doing scavenging missions to keep the heavy and special weapons stocked up. And you start with ~50 marines, if one dies he's gone for good.
I doubt the new game would have the courage to go for that but I guess I'll find out.

Is the DLC any good? I haven't played the game since those came out.

Xenonauts fails to understand a good aesthetic, a cast of characters that can give some decent fucking direction and having aliens not be completely bullshit in the air is necessary.

They keep making the air combat a race you can barely lose at ever and then ramping the ground insane style in a way where most people eat shit at. They dont have either the disposability level where your dudes are meant to actually die constantly or the numbers and math to permit it or the air superiority ability to then suck in the combat area, theyre out of whack.

playing heavily modded XCOM 2

Those requiem units are fucking with me so so bad. A couple of times now I had to abort a mission because of enemy pathfinding aggroing 2 pods too big to deal with without sacrificing a couple of soldiers. I managed to save every agent so far but I know it's just a matter of time now.

github.com/CyberSys/CreamInstaller

Is the DLC any good? I haven't played the game since those came out.

there are two reasons I still use windows: Steam OS 3 is not out and because its so easy to pirate DLC for games where I only have the base game in windows.

I don't see the point of Xenonauts 2 when Xenonauts 1 already exists. Putting 3d into it adds little to nothing while increasing the amount of work by a vast amount.

aesthetic, characters, air combat

That's just pointless trivialities I don't care about, I just want the ground battles to be worth doing.
And in that regard, Xenonauts gets the job done as well as the original from 30 years ago. I can't imagine the sequel improving upon it.

BEHEAD THOSE WHO INSULT XCOM

CS has good gameplay, it couldve easily existed as a spinoff between main games, i dont know why firaxis simply stopped making XCOM games

I dont get it, they all sold well, even Chimera Squad i think, accounting for the fact it was a lower budget experiment

i dont know why firaxis simply stopped making XCOM games

they made the shitty marvel card game which resulted in a lot of people being fired when it flopped

Being able to only send 4 dudes in a game where you can have a dozen classes sucks so much though.
And research is also useless most of the time.

A huge part of xcoms appeal for me was the creepy feeling the first game had and genuinely knowing nothing about the ayys and reading every word of each research report and autopsy, being genuinely interest in the details. The new games play better but they just didn't have that magic especially since they reused most of the same creatures. I'd love for them to do a fresh start with new stuff. I know there's thar other game gallup made but it was so bad I forgot the name of it.

How the hell is the Andromedon a minor inconvenience?

Those tanky fuckers are always a problem, they start as an organic ranged tank and when you kill em, they turn into a melee machine tank, it forces you to change your approach on the fly

I watch some of the Odd's xcom 2 playthrough and wonder what the fuck modders were thinking

What mods?

Yeah, thats why its dying. Xcom 1 achieved success with mid gameplay by drawing people in with aesthetics and a good premisse, but xenonauts purists refuse to understand this is what allows longer term project power and success to allow original xcom like games.

You guys are such purist retards you forget basic appeal beyond the gameplay. 3d is essential for these days, it's 2025, you're too gameplay focused to understand presentation is part of the feel and interest gathering.

Which is expected as a xenonauts retard, but cmon, you're downright stereotypical.

Oh crap, i forgot about that one, why was XCOM sacrificed for that?

presumably someone hire up thought they could cash in on the capeshit trend

Long War 1.0
Long War Rebalanced if you want a more action orientated gameplay

3d is essential for these days, it's 2025

If a game is good enough it will sell regardless. The problem is the people who make 3d xcom make mid gameplay and shitty visuals and no atmosphere whatsoever.

I just started his 9th season while using his modlist actually. I'm further up in my playthrough than I am on my watching but I'll catch up soon as I'm leaving my gaming PC for 2 weeks.

Can't wait to see how he's dealing with those bullshit aliens + chosen

Midnight Suns was great actually, once you figured out the deck system and as long as you have a healthy tolerance for cringe dialogue and Persona relationship meters.

yes, this is why chimera squad sucks too. putting aliens as permanent members of your team takes away all the mystery about them.

It doesn't look like a bad game but this isn't what people wanted and they basically killed their studio for it

squad revealed, but Reaper re-stealths

use Reaper to scout ahead

apparently revealed squad is too close so the pod activates

flanks and reveals the reaper, then crit guns them down

The worst fucking UI on the stealth system I fucking swear this piece of shit game is a blight on the tactics genre
Fucking JA3 has better UI

But none of that is relevant. I don't care about the people it draws in, I care about the game being good to play. The opinions of millions of normalfaggots is not my problem, all I care about is that I can go download Xenonauts and play the game at any that. That's what matters. Sixty million niggers masturbating to dr. Vahlen is not my fucking problem.
Firaxis xcom games might as well not exist as far as I'm concerned and I'm certainly not going to steer anyone in their awful direction.

I know there's thar other game gallup made but it was so bad I forgot the name of it.

That's Phoenix point. I don't know where you got the idea that it's bad because it's certainly the best one from the nuxcom line. It tends to filter retards because of how many systems it's got going on at the same time, but there is no viable argument for it being bad when it's the best of the 3d xcom style games. Well I guess there's Apocalypse, but that one has its own problems which of course stem from it being 3d at a time when 3d was still relatively early technology.

I hated the loading screens and gacha mechanics and tedious menus (the abbey itself)
it took away from gameplay

For a first timer or someone who has played a little bit never beaten the game, these aren't recommended, right?
Any qol or vanilla plus mods you recommend?

don't listen to that fag.
WOTC with mod a few mods that fix bugs is all you need for a great experience.

I've heard both great and bad things about long war, so I didn't plan on doing that right now
Can you recommend me these mods you're talking about?

they are all over the workshop, just look for "fix" or "bugfix".

Longwar is a mod that add a bunch of shit because once you learn how the vanilla game works it becomes extremely easy even on the hardest difficulties.

XCOM2+WOTC would be best then
Long War is great but does require autism

XCOM 3 couldve been the improved gameplay of 2 with the visual aesthetic of XCOM EW

instead the series just fucking dies after a shitty spinoff

long war is like brutal doom, it completely changes the game, if it is for the better or worse depends on the person who is playing it.

I'm just not sure which ones are actually needed

I remember playing modded xcom like 5 years ago with codexes that split every time they took damage

Just play long war

Yeah but now they have like 5 armor and 20 HP and they can stun the first unit that damage them etc

Torque did nothing wrong
The rest of Chimera Squad did a lot wrong, though

torque bar.jpg - 1000x1000, 56.71K

I miss XCOM.
Which is exactly why I don't want it to come back. It somehow making two good games with its comeback was already a fucking statistical anomaly and Chimera squad proved said anomaly is over too.

Chimera Squad really surprised me since it is genuinely good and they released it so cheap. Firaxis really needs to bring Jake Solomon back and also hire some writers because CS and Midnight Suns were crippled by their writing more than anything else
