SteamOS Public Release

Looks like Valve just released a public version of SteamOS.
Does that mean that the average Anon Babbleermin will hop off of Windows?

Users should not consider SteamOS as a replacement for their desktop operating system.

We expect most SteamOS users to get SteamOS preinstalled on a Steam Deck or device that incorporates SteamOS. The only devices officially supported on SteamOS right now are Steam Deck and Legion Go S.

We are working on broadening support, and with the recent updates to Steam and SteamOS, compatibility with other AMD powered PC handhelds has been improved.

Steam OS on your desktop is still a long way off

The only devices officially supported on SteamOS right now are Steam Deck and Legion Go S.

isn't it just arch with a kde theme?

as if linux isn't bad enough, steam adds their tracking and spyware to it

runs on a ROG Ally as well, its even in the install instructions you nigger

there is a video already with maple pajeet running it youtube.com/watch?v=-LwBoK078bk

Looks like Valve just released a public version of SteamOS.

he doesn't check the site

It has no downloads

No, it isn't "released," 'tardo.

That's Arch by default unless you choose Applenome.

The Deck/"Steam Arch" only adds Mango HUD after that and customizes the UI a small bit in game-console mode. But: Yes.

The 'Eck even got a KDE update to match Arch rolling.

This is so other companies making handheld PCs can license out the OS, likely to counteract Microsoft getting into the space.

PC """""""""handhelds"""""""""

Ewww.

steam deck reimage

What about real PCs?

no nvidia :(

Can you point me to a Nvidia handheld PC?

this is targeted for handhelds DUMBO

Steam OS on your desktop is still a long way off

steamos is just arch with kde and steam preinstalled and an immutable root filesystem alongside repos that are out of date

No because even Valve themselves have constantly said it's not for desktops.
I wish it was, because some big corporation like valve coming in and tard wrangling linux is what we need. But it's never happening.

there are like five distros with big corporations behind them
pretty sure valve is not even bigger than the likes of red hat or suse

valve

valve also does NOT want to support anyone's personal OS and their retarded low IQ lack of ability to do basic things
which is why SteamOS for handhelds has an immutable root filesystem

Red hat isn't really interested in average customers, they mostly pump out government/military machines.

Another Valve failure incoming

Does that mean that the average Anon Babbleermin will hop off of Windows?

No lol

meh, this is only for handhelds
not desktop pcs

Try Bazzite. It's basically SteamOS, but uses Fedora as its base instead and it also supports Nvidia GPUs.

Not mentioned is steam input now captures the trackpad on the original legion go. Though those controllers have a bunch of control setups thats going to be a pain to wrangle, even more so due to all the "features" you can't turn off

uses (one of the most woke OSes of all time) as its base instead

Uh, no thanks

Bazzite was far too restricted for what I needed outside of gaming. It's a great distro if all you do is game

My Alienware M17 R3, but is not a gameboy like but a proper portable PC. I want SteamOS on a man PC not on a Gameboy machine like Deck is.

This is still a significant step forward, with the new (Arch based) SteamOS now having a generic hardware "recovery" install medium, even if it only is officially made for the Deck.

Well, there's a difference between

it isn't designed to work on desktop common hardware

and

Its not for desktop typical use, its a distro that's more aligned to a Big Picture gaming UI and you have to opt into the Desktop (KDE Plasma) UI as you wish, like on the Steam Deck.

We know that valve has been working on getting the Gamescope compositor working on common hardware where it uses Wayland, but I think the Desktop UI with Plasma uses Xorg and/or XWayland etc..so there's some work to get it universally viable; hell, they wrote a whole new compositor from scratch!

Bazzite is okay, but its Fedora based and maybe I'm just an oldfag who remembers RPMhell but I never had a great affinity for RPM based distros. Bazzite, ChimeraOS and a few others are basically those that take SteamOS bits and try to staple them to other distros but I'd rather wait to see Valve's full commmon hardware SteamOS setup when its ready. Its neat that its now at least in testing though

It's like SteamOS

But is FEDora based, not Arch!

And it relies on fucking flatpak and has nothing to do with AUR!

Man just kill yourself

You faggots are still relying on valve for the ultimate fix, if you want a real windows alternative, Linux Mint is literally baby mode Ubuntu.

I don't understand the hype for SteamOS on other systems. There are tons of other Linux distros already available.

99% of Distros are run into the ground by troons and chinks. Take ubuntu one of the biggest distros they had a big drama regarding their recent update with kubuntu and lubuntu

>But is FEDora based, not Arch!

Like he said, it's Nvidia compatible

And it relies on fucking flatpak

What's the problem with that?

Ubuntu

Just kill yourself my man

It's the first Arch distro to be maintained by non-troon straight white males (Valve employees).

Mint is overrated

Like I see the appeal for handheld PCs since it's built for them, but desktops and laptops just use whatever distro works for you.

SteamOS is just arch with guardrails that boots straight into Steam. It is not some magical Windows replacement that's way easier to use than any other distro. People need to stop acting like it's the only way you can run Proton, they're setting themselves up for frustration. Linux is close, but it's not there yet for the vast majority. If you want to make the jump and have it be as painless as possible, use Mint.

Take ubuntu one of the biggest distros they had a big drama regarding their recent update with kubuntu and lubuntu

What's the big drama? I want the juicy details lol

Users should not consider SteamOS as a replacement for their desktop operating system.

Read NIGGA, READ!

Trannies don't keep track of what is in update and brick peoples machines

I've been using Bazzite for a while now and really enjoy how stable it is; I assume regular Fedora is the same just without the gaming tweaks.
What did you need to do that brew/docker and rpm-ostree can't do?
I installed Cloudflare WARP using ostree, Syncthing for file transfers via brew.sh and even host services for music (and porn) streaming via podman.

If I've learned anything about updating anything it's to just not update the second you see one available. Wait a day or two or however long you want (or in some cases, can).

It's the whole phenomenon ofgetting hyped up because you saw other people getting hyped up. Basically pic related. The CRT "community" now seems to be this way too.

They just can't come to terms with what steamos is - a system to to run steam - and what it isn't - a windows desktop alternative. Hell Valve didn't even have to include a desktop at all and the one they did it's notably older than most.

tl;dr

Think ChromeOS, but for games not web.

a28.png - 898x556, 1005.36K

There's also Artix, I believe.

People are conflating the real advancement, Proton, with SteamOS as if it's meant to be a Windows replacer because they're desperate not to get kicked to W11 and soon W12 by Microsoft. You can use Proton on any distro and SteamOS is just meant to be a Steam first flavor for handhelds.

does steamOS come with word processing or any jobshit softwares?
If they add a video editing software + everything essential it would be a good selling point to normalfags

fucks up

apologizes

takes accountability

tells people how to prevent it

If microsoft did this they would gaslight people by pretending it never happened after being sued years later for bricking peoples computers, meanwhile pretending nothing ever happened.

Not installed by default because that's bloat, but you can get just about anything running at this point or a ton of good shit for free. Basically the only thing missing is adobe shit because adobe are cunts.

If microsoft did this

They fuck up all the time, but it's indians not troons and if you have LTSC (like a white man should) it doesn't effect you

posting the debian version again

They have programs like LibreOffice and OpenShot for free in the discover store. If you want more, you can just download other programs off the internet.

the debian version did not use the gamescope contrtoller ui

file.png - 1280x800, 1.17M

could just do a 1 time setup if they want to remove the bloat or not.

Anything made by a real company and not just troons who will abandon it when they 51% themselves?

Didn't they break upgrading last year as well?

Yes, that's the linux experience.
Windows LTSC is the only option for a white man.

we've been through this before. that link leads to the old debian version.

honestly I hate microsoft, but they're usually good about situations like this.

Wrong link this is the recovery image of the Deck and Legion Go S link

sure man

4 years from now this will make Anon Babble cry blood.

A NORMIE CALLED MY GENTOO INSTALL A "DECK" AND ASKED ME WHAT STEAM GAMES I HAD ON IT

It will be glorious

calypso.jpg - 1280x712, 69K

Users should not consider SteamOS as a replacement for their desktop operating system.

i would burn this to an usb right now, gaben

Yes, but normalbros don't understand what a KDE is let alone an arch

Oh cool, might install on my miniPC

Anon Babbleermin jumping to Linux

You have to have very low IQ to think that anyone is interested in Linux. It's literally last option on people minds as far as OS goes. People would rather install android on their PCs than Linux.

did you even visit the link? it goes to their new instructions that use the steamos 3 recovery image for handhelds

store.steampowered.com/steamos/

Last time I saw that URL in a thread almost like this one, it was still a link to the page about the ancient Debian 8 (Jessie)-based SteamOS, pictured, a page that Valve should have deleted at least half a decade ago. Fuck you for almost tricking me into replying as if that's still the case.
Anyway, now it's a page that says

The only devices officially supported on SteamOS right now are Steam Deck and Legion Go S.

so it's not "just released" in any meaningful way. It's simply supported on two handheld devices now, instead of one.
When (or if) there's an officially supported desktop release, then you probably will see a bunch of people go and install it, but it still won't matter, because all of the people who flock to SteamOS will immediately fall into one of three groups: the slightly stupid ones who realize that SteamOS is Linux after all and, that could have just installed Linux Mint or any other desktop-ready distribution years earlier; the moderately stupid ones ones who realize that SteamOS is Linux after all, and run back to Windows; and the massively stupid ones don't realize that SteamOS is Linux, and continue claiming that Linux is impossible to use while using Linux-but-with-a-Steam-logo-on-it. Only the last group will truly be happy.

old page.png - 971x859, 884.31K

Smart of them to put that sentence there, to be honest. Now they can just tap the sign when someone goes

UMMMM I DOUBLE CLICKED PHOTOSHOP.EXE AND IT DIDN'T WORK????????

>And it relies on fucking flatpak and has nothing to do with AUR!

just like SteamOS

Retard they didn't mention windows. They legitimately mean desktop OS in general like Ubuntu. Steam OS is for GAMING not for productivity use

yeah I'm sure they assume everyone reading that page will be an Ubuntu user

I use manjaro

just like SteamOS

you have AUR and PACMAN on SteamOS, Flatpak is just a plus, on Bazzite is Flatpak only.

I dont understand the hype, if people wanted linux they would just get linux

Yeah no shit, people dont want linux. They probably just a major player that can centralize and defragment work on a non windows and non mac operating system

and on SteamOS you lose anything that you install from AUR or Namco's Pac-Man™ after the next update because it's immutable unless you fuck around so much that you might as well have installed Arch instead of SteamOS

I do also use it on my secondary machine.
Primary i'm trying endeavourOS.

The only devices officially supported on SteamOS right now are Steam Deck and Legion Go S.

DESU I just want to see windows lose market share.

No I'm doing free beta testing for a gorillion dollar corporation. Kill yourself.

people want linux since Windows is gettier shittier and shittier every edition, but not the neckbeard leet sysadmin haxx0r Linux where you open up cmd to grok ur paks and spend 9 hours reading through programming manuals to troubleshoot. they just want it to werkz

no normie is gonna move over to linux because of anti cheat and adobe products

"muh replacement and you don't need those programs"

seethe faggot

no adobe shit

no vegas shit

no fortnite shit

no destiny shit

no call of duty shit

Linux is for neet mofos and nerds

Until people don't have to manually install linux and it just comes on the computer they buy, no. Yes, that is the biggest gatekeep and yes people are that tech illiterate and lazy.

I don't see the point either. SteamOS is great on steam deck but I already have a Linux desktop that has all the functionality of Steam OS by just opening steam. Since I use my pc for more than just gaming it would not be the best choice for an OS. Yes, Steam OS has desktop mode and theoretically works just fine as a general use operating system but why go through the extra steps? There is no real benefit for that use case. The best use would be putting it on some other windows handheld.

Does it matter when I'm still buying Switch 2?

We've had the recovery image for years retard

Your insecurity pleases me.

Why? Even Valve is saying not to install it on your Desktop, and there is also the fact that some companies have banned linux entirely due to cheating.
