It was slightly randomized, and incentivised players moving around together to explore stuff.
Dungeons needs gimmicks and need to be on the same tier as trails. You need the same design ethos as trails for dungeons.
Realm Reborn ironically was on the right path towards that, even in the Coil designs before the bosses.

FF11 and FF12 use RTB, real time battle system which is a hybrid of using turnbased abilities into real time combat. They are not action based.

The fact FF13 is still called turnbased just goes to show you how silly it is to call these ATB games turnbased in the first place. What makes these kind of games distinct is how they handle *space* not *time*. FF13 is such an extreme example.
These are games where you don't move (or movement doesn't matter, like in 12) and you select attacks using a menu instead of pushing a button to make a character move with an attack. Their combat systems are (mostly) map-less tactical battles, which rarely goes beyond "rows" in terms of positioning.
Obviously the action games and MMOs are different, though 11 is still effectively menu based and less movement driven than 14.

FFXI works totally fine as a single player game, though it's even better with a friend or two to go along with you. If you are careful about not being overleveled for mission fights, you may even find those battles very enjoyable.
The peak era can be somewhat experienced with private servers, but that would require a huge commitment.
The only real catch for the retail version is that it is basically required to follow a guide, if not keep a wiki open at all times (though that can be overkill half the time).
1.0 had very little FFXI assets during its launch. When it went into panic mode and YoshiP(iss) took over, that's when the FFXI model reuse began to enter the game. It wasn't a ton though. It's only with 2.0 it became egregious and started to include FFXII and FFXIII. Perhaps what's more egregious is that they are still doing it to this day. Anyway saying that 50% (or more) of FFXIV's monster models are from other games (with some touch-ups) is 100% true.

I liked Zenos ever since I had seen him first in Stormblood when I originally began playing the game, when he began giving me Camusian rhetoric. I instantly knew then that the character would be incredibly based if they stayed the course and I couldn't be happier with the way they had gone out.
He didn't really get good until you killed him the first time and he told you why he was the way he was. Basically somebody on par with the WoL but forced into the shitty uneventful life of a Garlean who couldn't find anybody to challenge him until you finally bested him. Then when you had other fish to fry in EW he became more and more desperate for your attention he kept doing atrocity after atrocity to get you to focus on him again.

Omega can peer into other worlds via it which is how it made it's boss trials, and Greg uses it to cross dimensions even though he can't really choose his destination as he's still trying to reach the FF5 world again all these generations later (Omega probably could have helped him actually).

That's his haughtiness and arrogance in play and thinking he knew everything when he really didn't. It took Ilberd and Teledji playing him for an absolute fool that he realized he's not as smart as he thought he was. Even in HW he still treated the WoL as an attack dog for quite awhile until he started seeing them more as a person than a tool. A lot of people still treat WoL like that though even now so it's not like he was special in that regard.
Krile is just Ysthola without anything even slightly interesting, being a lala is her only appeal

Same thing happened to Thancred and Urianger. Thancred especially has been at a dead end ever since the end of ShB. I don't want him killed off but they should retire him for awhile until he can go see Ryne again, or at least have him go back to his playboy ways for comedy.
Krile was created because Ysthola was gone, they could be combined into the same character and literally nothing would change
