Windows 10 decided to install itself on an old Windows 8 laptop that my family had years ago and all but bricked the thing. Had to spend two days moving the data to another hard drive via DOS.
I'm not taking a similar risk for a 20% drop in VR performance. I'd rather put up with weeks of tinkering in Linux than deal with Windows 11.

I like windows 11 pro. There are a few features I don't like but overall I like it.

it's not all doom and gloom though, for the most part shit works, I would suggest 2nd boot partition or making live cd/usb and try out Linux (Mint of you want something with minimal fiddling, Arch if you want to fiddle with EVERYTHING)

There is no reason to upgrade. Windows 11 is more or less the same as windows 10. You still have to turn off telemetry. The only real difference I found, is that the right click menu is less intuitive, because they tried to simplify copy/cut/paste/ into textless symbols. And I always forget this, and take a few seconds hunting the new symbols. But actually, they updated to include text again, next to the symbols. I guess someone at Microsoft finally got sick of trying to remember what symbol does what, and forced them to put the text back.

But that still doesn't address the problem where a lot of right click options are hidden. If you want to simply refresh the folder you're in, you have to right click and then go to "show more options", which brings up the old right click menu with all of the normal options, and then you can refresh.

Also, in previous Windows, if you wanted to sort your folder by an uncommon sorting order, you would have to simply right click, sort by, show more options, and then it pulls up a big list of sorting options. For me, I would always want "sort by modified". Because that places everything in the order it was last used. Which is perfect for my brain, because when a folder has a lot of files, I can estimate the last time I used the file, and scroll to approximately the timeframe I think it's in to find it. However, for some reason, they removed the show more options button, along with the big list of sorting options. Now you have to go hunting somewhere else to get the sort by modified option, and I honestly forget how to do this every time. Like, it's so not intuitive. I have to look it up every time, and then I immediately forget again.

So yeah, it's pretty much the same system, except some of the menus are less intuitive than they used to be.

Microfart decided Windows should automatically encrypt your drive silently and store the key in your Microsoft account (which 90% of users don't even know they have or never access after logging in once on their computer). I'm 37, I've used PCs since about 12 years old. I've changed a lot over the years, but one thing I did early was having secondary hard drives to hold the important stuff (also have off site backups). Music/movies/pictures are on one drive. Documents folder is changed to another drive (regedit). Steam on another drive. Backup you appdata folder in your username if you have a lot of shit you might want to save. These can all be on one drive, but keep certain things off your C: drive.

Always format fresh install.

I juts remembered, I use something called explorerpatcher, you can change things like taskbar and start menu etc to win10 behaviour. I forgot what win11 default actually looks like.

HDR is so much better on 11, if you have an HDR display, do not bother with 10. I just went back to test LTSC, it sucked. There's also injecting it with Reshade, Nvidia, or even SpecialK. But AutoHDR is usually good enough in most games.
