Call backs and memberberries are the definition of bait and switch. It had almost nothing to do with any area, character or concept from CT except as window dressing on a tiny window in the back of the building. And frankly was disrespectful to CT.

CC's connection to CT is stronger than you think. Nothing in CC could happen if Serge died, and he would die if Schala didn't save him by causing a storm from the Darkness Beyond Time where she landed after getting sucked in by a dimensional vortex in CT.
The place where the whole action of CC is set, the El Nido archipelago can only exist, because Crono and the party defeated Lavos, that's why it's not there in CT.

Literally all of CC happens because of your actions in CT. Everything in CC is planned out ahead of time by a CT character. (Belthesar) The primary antagonist is also a minor antagonist from CT. (Fate is just Mother Brain retooled by Belthesar).

-the regular battle theme is kinda trash.
-Most characters are shallow as fuck and exactly the same but with different accents/lines.
-The whole saving Kidd vs not saving Kidd kinda sucks making you miss stuff/character.
-normal battles give almost NO damn exp at all.
Other than that, real great game, very comfy.

All of which is just backflipping and sidestepping to keep the game as far as humanly possible away from the lore and setting of CT but connected by the thinnest and most translucent of threads to close a loose end in CT that nobody really cared about.

Schala is a great example of this. She looks nothing like Schala. She acts nothing like Schala. Her motivations have nothing to do with Schala's. Oh she felt sorry for random fucking baby crying so she choose to save Serge across all of time and space instead of, you know, trying to reach out to her powerful brother. Then when people pointed that stupidity out they had to do the retcon. It is a BAD, poorly thought out, plot that made no sense to even a casual player of CT purely to claim this game was made as a genuine sequel.

The characters you can obtain after choosing to save/or not to save Kid are not even remotely equal - Glenn is ridiculous with his dual Einhanzers and Razzly is the queen of AoE(also dies a horrible death if you don't save Kid) but who really needs that when you could have Glenn + Serge?
