Rent + going out all the time was pretty affordable before the 2010s when condo culture skyrocketed cost of living everywhere. Even if you weren't a fan of bars, there's pretty decent ~$20 shows of every genre going on every week in most big cities because lots of small venues could still afford to exist at the time. Festival season during the summer was really fun too.
