he speaks fluent korean, teaches at dongseo university in south korea, and grew up in south africa. he has the best analysis of the country and it's culture. what he has to share about the country is extremely different from most of what is said about the country. I highly recommend watching it, it's incredibly fascinating.

The few people I got to talk with in Pyongyang seemed happy enough. They were mostly people with ties to the party, teachers and students. They were extremely deluded about what the world outside of NK looks like, but they were content with their lives.
For married women and especially people outside of Pyongyang it's a different story. A woman I talked to told me domestic abuse is very commonplace, and the people in the villages lived in really poor conditions and infrastructure outside of the capital was really underdeveloped.

yes there are multiple debates among professors and scholars on the topic, a lot of the criticism I've seen of him typically complain about him holding a chinese *CCP* perspective on the country and how he states that the kim dynasty enjoys more popularity in the country then people like to admit. a lot of the debates and discussions I've seen him have with others is really fascinating. I forget his name but one german economist had some really interesting talks with him.

Normally that'd be correct, but North Korea keeps to itself and stays isolationist. The US is constantly making itself a part of every other region, trying to be the world police, destabilize countries with proxy wars, etc. If Americans left things along, people wouldn't hate them as much as they do now.

I also want to add the US hasn't been engaged in proxy wars since the collapse of the ussr although that kind of changed with the russia ukraine war. also the idea that the dprk is isolationist isn't wholy true. they conduct business in china, russia, mongolia, algeria, lebanon, and a host of other countries. additionally they deployed troops into ukraine to assist russia. also they have shifted from a command based economy since the famine in the 90s and operate with a two fold economy that has the party the official regulator of day to day business while allowing for a black market economy and even private enterprise. the dprk also removed mention of them being a communist country fairly recently, and they operate more like china.
