For example, I once had to deal with a company that had accrued millions in interest alone from paying late because of a major restructuring that was going on within the company. They wanted a remission of that interest. The ATO's decision was "Go fuck yourself." Here's the really fun part. It was PAYGI which is a tax on income that, in this case, wasn't even earned. So basically they had to pay interest on a tax debt that they didn't even wind up actually having. And the ATO just said "Fuck you. We don't care that the tax debt is not genuine. You still have to pay the interest on it." Them being a big company didn't get them out of that. In fact, it made it harder for them. Had they been a small business the ATO probably would have been a lot more lax.
