Why is every single FromSoft game some variant of a post-apocalyptic world with nihilism and cynicism as the main focus of everything?
All is bleak and dark and lifeless. Everyone talks in weird melancholic and depressed prose. There seems to pretty much be no hope for anything getting better and the endings never seem to be happy in any way, it's just some various choice between what level of misery do you want it to end on.

Really it's difficult to tell. If you take out anyone at the onset of gaming - you miss out the cultural impact of why gaming developed the way it is. So you really need to go after the money that incentivizes the ideology which made gaming what it is today. The difficult part is there's just so many of them and so many to take their place... that you'd have to get pivotal people at just the right timing to disrupt important events, otherwise it doesn't do much. I don't think time travel assassinating one person would be enough. There's many different factors that led to the current state of vidya.
But if there's one thing that could have at least delayed the decline, it would be whacking the right person in the 2000s to prevent Xbox from ever gaining prominence in the market. A bunch of bad trends began with it.
Even then I'm not convinced eliminating one person would be enough. I suspect the Xbox's rise to prominence was backed by certain factions who weren't happy with the growing console market being dominated by the Japanese.
